Schlage L9044 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the coin turn on the L9044 work, and who can unlock the door from the outside?
On the L9044, the lever retracts the latchbolt from either side unless the inside thumbturn or the outside coin turn has locked the outside lever. Turning the outside coin turn with a coin or flat blade unlocks it, and so does turning the inside lever or simply closing the door. That is the difference between this and a plain privacy lock: staff or maintenance can get in from the corridor side without a key, which is why it gets specified on patient rooms, dorm baths and public restrooms rather than a lock that only releases from inside.
2) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering a Schlage L9044 mortise lock?
Not for the lock itself. The L9044 is non-handed, so one lock covers a left or right hand opening. The one place hand enters the order is lever style: the 12 Lever is ordered as a specific left hand or right hand part, while the 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17, 18, Latitude, Longitude and Omega designs are not split that way.
3) Will the L9044 latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
It depends on what is prepped. The L9044 ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, box type, with a 1-3/16 inch lip, and the latchbolt is a 3/4 inch throw stainless steel unit with an anti-friction tongue. If the existing frame carries a square corner ANSI strike of that size, the replacement drops in. Round corner or a T-strike prep means you are either changing the strike or filling and re-prepping the jamb. The 1-3/16 inch lip is measured to clear your stop, so check that dimension against the frame before you reuse the opening.
4) What size mortise pocket does the Schlage L9044 need in the door?
The L9044 lock case measures 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches, and the armor front is 1-1/4 by 8 inches. That is the standard L9000 pocket, so if the door is already prepped for another L Series mortise lock the case goes straight in. A door cut for a different manufacturer's mortise body will usually need the pocket and the edge prep verified against the L Series template before you commit.
5) Is the Schlage L9044 rated for a fire door?
Yes. The L9000 locks are UL listed for 3-hour fire doors, with the exception of the L9076 and L9077 functions, and the L9044 is not one of those exceptions. The UL/cUL listing covers A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are what an inspector looks for. The line is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 operational and Grade 1 security, and meets ADA requirements.
6) Does the Schlage L9044 privacy lock have a deadbolt?
No. The L9044 is a latchbolt-only privacy function: the lever locks, the coin turn or thumbturn controls it, and there is no deadbolt to throw. If you need a privacy set with a deadbolt in the same case, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt, also built for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a straight mortise deadbolt on its own, the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
7) What is the closest equivalent to the Schlage L9044 privacy mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is the nearest cross-brand match. Both are Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise locksets built for 1-3/4 inch doors, so the opening prep and duty expectation line up. The difference is in the locking hardware: the L9044 works off an inside thumbturn with a coin turn on the outside for emergency release, while the NM8440 is a privacy mortise lockset with a deadbolt. If the spec calls for a privacy function with a throw bolt rather than a latch-only privacy set, the NM8440 is the one that matches; if the requirement is thumbturn privacy with outside coin release, stay with the L9044.
8) Is there a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock that fits doors thicker than 1-3/4 inches?
The Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset covering a 1-3/4 to 2 inch door thickness range, so it reaches openings up to 2 inches. The Schlage L9044 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door at the same 2-3/4 inch backset. On a standard 1-3/4 inch door either backset prep is identical; the 3840S is the one to reach for when the door is thicker than that.
9) The restroom door only needs a latch, no locking. What should I use instead of the L9044?
Drop to a passage mortise lock. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the L9044 backset. The L9044 adds privacy locking through an inside thumbturn with an outside coin turn; a passage function has no locking at all, so if the door will ever need to be secured from the inside, the passage sets will not do the job.
10) Behavioral health unit needs privacy on patient bathrooms. Is the L9044 the right lock, or is there an anti-ligature option?
For ligature-resistant openings, look at the TownSteel MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy-duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the MRX-A-01, the same Grade 1 heavy-duty build with satin stainless ligature-resistant arch trim. Both are passage function, so they latch without locking. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. The L9044 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with conventional lever trim on a 1-3/4 inch door - it gives you the inside thumbturn and outside coin turn those three do not, but its lever trim is not ligature resistant.
11) I want a keypad privacy lock instead of a mechanical thumbturn. What is the electronic equivalent of the L9044?
The Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function with a keypad reader, Grade 1 heavy duty for a 1-3/4 inch door - the same grade, duty level and door thickness as the L9044, with credential entry in place of mechanical trim. The Alarm Lock DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad, but it covers 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors and is a deadbolt function rather than a latching privacy set. The L9044 is non-electronic, so it needs no power, battery or programming.
12) The door needs to be locked with a key, not just a thumbturn. What replaces the L9044?
Move to a keyed mortise function. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option on a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset, also 1-3/4 inch. The L9044 is a non-keyed lock - it takes no cylinder, and its outside coin turn is an emergency release rather than a credential. If the opening has to be secured against the public and opened by staff with a key, one of the keyed functions is the correct call.
13) Is a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body a drop-in swap for a Schlage L9044?
No, the prep differs. The Baldwin 6301 entry/apartment mortise lock body uses a 2-1/2 inch backset in both the knob-by-knob 6301 and the lever-by-lever 6301LS, for doors 1-3/4 inch and over. The L9044 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset on a 1-3/4 inch door. Swapping between them moves the cylinder and spindle centerline a quarter inch off the existing mortise pocket and trim holes, so a 6301 will not land in a pocket cut for the Schlage. Function differs too: the 6301 is entrance/apartment while the L9044 is privacy/bed/bath.
14) Should I use a mortise privacy lock like the L9044 or a cylindrical privacy lock on a restroom door?
Mortise makes sense where the door gets hammered and where you want an emergency release from the corridor. The L9044 is a heavy duty commercial lock, Grade 1 operational and security, with a 3/4 inch stainless latch and an outside coin turn for staff access. That combination is what specifiers reach for on institutional restrooms, patient rooms and dorm baths. A cylindrical privacy set is faster and cheaper to install because it only needs a bore, but it does not give you the same case strength or the ANSI mortise pocket that lets you swap functions later. If the door is already mortise-prepped, staying mortise is the easy call.
15) I need to match the L9044 to the other Schlage hardware in my building. What finishes and lever designs can I get?
Eleven finishes are offered: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless steel and 643E aged bronze. Lever designs run 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12 (ordered LH or RH), 17, 18, plus Latitude, Longitude and Omega. Rose and escutcheon choices are A wrought rose, B wrought rose, N escutcheon and L full face escutcheon. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so a facility standardizing on one lever design can carry it across the exit devices too.
16) Can the Schlage L9044 be wired to an access control system?
No. The L9044 is a mechanical, non-keyed privacy lock with no electrification. If the opening needs to be controlled or credentialed, look at an electrified mortise lock instead: the Schlage Electronics LE Series LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock that covers privacy, office and apartment functions on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage CO-100 mortise with keypad reader is a standalone Grade 1 privacy-function lock for the same door thickness. For a wired solution, the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock running 12V or 24V.
17) What is a comparable Grade 1 privacy mortise lock if the Schlage L9044 doesn't suit the job?
Two close alternatives. The Hager 3840S from the 3800 Series is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on the same 2-3/4 inch backset, and it covers a 1-3/4 to 2 inch door thickness range, which is the one to look at if your doors are thicker than 1-3/4 inches. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset that includes a deadbolt, on a 1-3/4 inch door. Neither carries the outside coin turn release that the L9044 has, so if corridor-side emergency access is the requirement, that feature is what you would be giving up.
18) Is the L9044 suitable for a behavioral health or patient room where ligature resistance is required?
The standard L9044 with a lever and rose is not a ligature resistant set. Schlage does offer Gold Standard ligature resistant trim for behavioral health on the L Series, so the lock body can stay and the trim changes. If you want a purpose-built anti-ligature mortise lockset instead, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01 is the arch trim version. Both are passage function, so they will not give you the privacy locking the L9044 does.
19) Can I add a key cylinder to the Schlage L9044 later?
The L9044 is a non-keyed function. There is no cylinder in it, so there is nothing to key into your existing system. If the room later needs to be keyed, you change the function rather than the trim: the L Series universal lock case supports 10 different functions from a single body, so on many openings the swap stays inside the same mortise pocket. For a keyed mortise on a comparable Grade 1 opening, the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a classroom function mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) Which privacy mortise locks work on a 1-5/8 inch door?
Among the electronic options, the Alarm Lock DL4500 covers 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors as a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad. The mechanical Grade 1 privacy sets sit on thicker stock: the Schlage L9044 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door, the Cal-Royal NM8440 for 1-3/4 inch, and the Hager 3840S for 1-3/4 to 2 inch. Confirm the leaf thickness before ordering, because a 1-5/8 inch door falls below all three of the mechanical sets.
21) Can I use a Sargent 130KB or 130W thumbturn in place of the L9044 privacy lock?
No. The Sargent 130KB and 130W are standard-duty mortise thumbturns - the 130W with a round backplate - meaning they are trim pieces that operate a lock case, not locks. The L9044 is a complete Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise lockset with a 4-7/16 inch by 3-5/8 inch by 1 inch case, a 3/4 inch stainless steel latch with anti-friction tongue and a 10-072 box strike. A thumbturn alone will not fill a mortise pocket or latch a door; order it only as trim for a case you already have.
22) Are the Emtek Brisbane and Memphis mortise entrance locksets an alternative to the L9044 for a bathroom door?
They are not. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane and 3102 Memphis mortise entrance locksets are dummy function, as are the 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan - dummy trim has no latch and no locking mechanism, so the door will not latch or hold shut. The L9044 is a Grade 1 privacy lockset that retracts a 3/4 inch stainless latchbolt from either side unless the outside lever is locked by the inside thumbturn. For a bathroom you need an operating privacy function; the Emtek dummies suit an inactive leaf or a decorative pull only.
23) We are standardizing a dorm floor. Where does the L9044 fit against a dormitory function lock?
Use them on different doors. The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty dormitory exit function mortise lock with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt - it takes a key and throws a deadbolt, which suits a student room entry off a corridor. The L9044 is a non-keyed Grade 1 privacy lock with an inside thumbturn and outside coin turn, which suits the bathroom inside the suite. Both are heavy duty mortise, so the door prep discipline is the same across the floor.
24) What Grade 1 mortise lock should go on an office door if the L9044 is on the restrooms?
The Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty office/entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock, non-keyed, with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset - the same backset the L9044 uses, so the door prep carries across. The L9044 stays on the restrooms because its thumbturn and coin turn are a privacy arrangement rather than an office lock-and-unlock cycle.
25) Does the Schlage LE mobile-enabled mortise lock cover the same privacy application as the L9044?
Partly. The Schlage Electronics LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED whose function set includes privacy, office and apartment, on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 3 hour fire rating - the same door thickness as the L9044. It is a Grade 2 lock, where the L9044 is Grade 1. If the specification calls for Grade 1 on the opening, the L9044 holds it; if credential and mobile access matter more than the grade line, the LEBMB-ADD is the one that offers them.
26) What is the Schlage L9044 lock case made of, and will it hold up in a high traffic building?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty, and the line exceeds ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 security and operational standards. The latchbolt and deadbolt components are stainless steel. A security blocking hub stops someone picking the lock by pulling the levers off. That is the construction a property manager wants on corridor and restroom doors that see constant cycling, and it also meets the Buy American Act, which matters on federal and publicly funded work.
