Schlage LV9444 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage LV9444 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
That's the only thickness it's built for. The LV9444 is specified at 1-3/4 inch door thickness with a 2-3/4 inch backset, which is the standard commercial opening. If your doors are thicker, the L escutcheon trim option covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch, so the trim, not the base spec, is where thicker doors get handled. Mortise pocket needs to take a case measuring 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inches.
2) How does the LV9444 privacy function actually work on a restroom or patient room door?
Either lever retracts the latchbolt normally. The deadbolt is thrown from an inside thumbturn, and throwing it locks the outside lever. From outside, a coin turn retracts the deadbolt and unlocks the outside lever, so staff or maintenance can get in without a key. Inside, turning the lever pulls both the deadbolt and the latchbolt at once and releases the outside lever, so the room never traps anyone. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
3) What does the Vandlgard part of the Schlage LV9444 do?
Vandlgard is the free-wheeling outside trim option. When the outside lever is locked, it spins freely instead of resisting, so someone hanging on it or forcing it down doesn't transfer torque into the lock body. That's why the LV prefix exists on this privacy function, and it's the version to specify for schools, dorms, transit, and public restrooms where trim abuse is the failure you keep paying for.
4) Do I need to specify handing when I order an LV9444 mortise lock?
No. The LV9444 is non-handed, so one lock covers left and right hand openings. The one place handing does show up is the lever design itself: the 12 lever is ordered as a specific left hand or right hand part, while the 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 17 and Latitude levers are not split that way.
5) Is the Schlage LV9444 rated for a fire door?
The L Series latch is UL listed for 3 hour fire doors (excluding the L9076 and L9077 functions), with UL/cUL listing for A label single doors up to 4 by 10 feet and pairs up to 8 by 10 feet. The letter F and the UL symbol stamped on the latch front are how you confirm the listing on a lock already in hand. The lock is also certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13, Series 1000, Grade 1 Operational and Grade 1 Security, and meets ADA requirements.
6) Will the LV9444 latch into the strike already in my frame?
It depends on what's prepped. The lock ships with a 10-072 strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, square corner, with a 1-3/16 inch lip and a box. The latchbolt is 3/4 inch throw stainless with an anti-friction tongue, and the deadbolt is a 1 inch throw stainless bolt with an anti-saw pin. If your frame carries an ANSI square corner strike prep of that size you're reusing the cutout; a radius corner strike or an older non-ANSI prep means new frame work regardless of the lock.
7) Do I need a key or a cylinder for the Schlage LV9444?
No cylinder, no key. The LV9444 is a non-keyed privacy lock: the deadbolt is operated by the inside thumbturn and the outside coin turn only. If you need key access from the outside on the same L Series case, that's a different function, not an option you add to this one. Don't order cylinders against it.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage LV9444 mortise privacy lock with deadbolt?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is the nearest match. It is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, which lines up with the LV9444's Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath function, heavy duty rating and 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The Hager 3840S is a second option, a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with a 2-3/4 inch backset matching the LV9444 backset, rated for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The difference to weigh is the free-wheeling Vandlgard outside trim on the LV9444, which lets the outside lever spin rather than transmit force into the lock case.
9) What mortise lock should be used instead of an LV9444 on a restroom or closet door that does not need a deadbolt?
Step down to a passage function. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks with a 2-3/4 inch backset, the 3810S with a rose and the 3810E with an escutcheon, both for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. A passage lock has no locking element at all, where the LV9444 throws a deadbolt from an inside thumbturn and retracts it from an outside coin turn.
10) Can a Sargent 4874 mortise deadbolt replace a Schlage LV9444?
No. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it shares the LV9444's backset but provides bolt only, with no latchbolt and no lever. The LV9444 is a lever lockset whose latchbolt retracts from either side and whose deadbolt operates from an inside thumbturn or outside coin turn. A 4874 on a bath or bedroom door leaves no way to latch the door shut, and a double cylinder deadbolt needs a key on both sides rather than a thumbturn. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is likewise a deadbolt function mortise lock, not a lockset with a latch.
11) Which mortise lock should be ordered instead of an LV9444 when the door needs to be keyed?
The LV9444 is a non-keyed lock with no cylinder. For a keyed opening in the same mortise prep, the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for 1-3/4 inch doors, the NM8050 is a Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch, and the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever. For a classroom opening the Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors and the Cal-Royal NM8070 is a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch.
12) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage LV9444 lever lock?
Three choices build the part number: lever design, rose or escutcheon, and finish. Levers are 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12 (called out LH or RH), 17, and Latitude. Trim is A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless, and 643E aged bronze. Same lever, rose, and finish go on both faces, and the matching latch and strike come with it.
13) Should I use a mortise privacy lock like the LV9444 or a cylindrical privacy lockset?
Mortise is the call when the door sees heavy public traffic or you want a separate deadbolt behind the privacy function. The LV9444 puts a 1 inch deadbolt and a 3/4 inch latch in one heavy duty case and needs a mortise pocket cut for a 4-7/16 x 3-5/8 x 1 inch body. A cylindrical lock only needs a bored hole and is faster to install and cheaper to prep, but it gives you a latch alone. If the door is already mortise prepped, stay mortise; retrofitting a bored door to mortise is a door replacement conversation.
14) Is there an electronic version of a mortise privacy lock if I want access control instead of a coin turn?
The LV9444 is entirely mechanical, no wiring, no power. If the opening needs credentials, the Schlage CO-100 is a standalone electronic mortise lock in privacy function, Grade 1, heavy duty, for 1-3/4 inch doors, with a keypad reader. The Schlage LE Series LEBMB-ADD is a mobile-enabled mortise lock covering privacy, office, and apartment functions, Grade 2, 3 hour fire rating, also 1-3/4 inch doors. Both take the same door thickness as the LV9444, so the opening itself doesn't change.
15) Will the LV9444 levers match the Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage hardware already in my building?
Yes, and this is the reason facilities standardize on L Series. All L Series levers suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the related LE, LM9200, LM9300, and LT products, so the lever design and finish carry across the mortise locks, the exit device trim, and the electronic openings. Across the LV9444 alone you have 10 lever designs and 10 finishes, from 626 satin chrome and 630 satin stainless through to 613 oil rubbed bronze and 622 matte black, to match what's already hanging.
16) Does the Schlage LV9444 meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
The L Series meets BAA (Buy American Act), and it also carries Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings, which is what you'll be asked for on coastal work. On the standards side it's certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 Security and Operational, and ANSI/ASTM F476-76 Grade 40, UL listed. Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code.
17) What's the difference between a privacy mortise lock with a deadbolt and a classroom or storeroom mortise lock?
Function, not hardware grade. The LV9444 privacy function locks the outside lever by throwing a deadbolt from inside the room, with a coin turn for outside override, which is the pattern for restrooms, bedrooms, and exam rooms. A storeroom function like the Accentra 8805FL or Cal-Royal NM8080 keeps the outside lever locked at all times and takes a key. A classroom function like the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or Cal-Royal NM8070 is keyed from outside to lock and unlock the outside lever. If anyone other than the occupant needs routine keyed access, privacy is the wrong function to spec.
18) Can I use the LV9444 on a behavioral health or patient room door?
Not as an anti-ligature solution on its own. The LV9444 is a standard lever privacy lock, and levers are a ligature point. Schlage does offer ligature resistant trim in the L Series (the Gold Standard and HSLR high risk trim), and for a fully anti-ligature mortise set the TownSteel MRX-L-01 (Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever) and MRX-A-01 (arch trim, satin stainless) are built for it, both for 1-3/4 inch doors. Spec the ligature resistant trim or those units for rooms where self-harm risk is assessed.
19) Is a Baldwin 6301 mortise lock body a substitute for a Schlage LV9444?
They do not interchange in the same prep. The Baldwin 6301 is an entry/apartment function mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset, offered knob by knob and as the 6301LS lever by lever, and the 6310 and 6310190RRLS are entry/storeroom bodies on the same 2-1/2 inch backset. The LV9444 uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, so the case sits at a different distance from the door edge and the cross bore and trim locations differ. The Baldwin bodies are also entry functions rather than privacy.
20) Does an Emtek mortise entrance lockset work in place of a Schlage LV9444?
No. The Emtek 3019 Brisbane, 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton and 3106 Manhattan mortise entrance locksets are all dummy function, meaning fixed trim with no working latch or bolt. The LV9444 is an operating lockset whose latchbolt retracts from either side and whose deadbolt is thrown by an inside thumbturn. Dummy trim is for an inactive leaf of a pair or a false door.
21) What is the difference between a Schlage LV9444 and a Sargent 7925 dormitory lock for a residence hall room?
Both are Grade 1 heavy duty mortise locks with a deadbolt. The Sargent 7925 is a corridor/dormitory exit function with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt, so the outside is keyed. The LV9444 is non-keyed privacy/bed/bath: the deadbolt is thrown by an inside thumbturn and the outside side is a coin turn, and the inside lever always releases both bolts for immediate egress. Choose by whether staff need key access from the corridor.
22) What is the difference between the Schlage LV9444 and the Schlage LE Series mortise locks?
The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions, 3 hour fire rating, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and mobile-enabled deadbolt with LED on Greenwich trim, right hand, 3 hour fire rating. The LV9444 is mechanical and non-electronic, Grade 1, with the deadbolt driven by an inside thumbturn and an outside coin turn, and its levers suite with the LE Series so trim can be matched across an opening group.
23) What is the LV9444 lock case made of and how does it hold up in a wet or high traffic room?
The case is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, rated heavy duty for commercial use. The working bolts are stainless: 3/4 inch latchbolt with an anti-friction tongue and a 1 inch deadbolt. A security blocking hub stops picking by pulling the levers off. That combination is why it lands on dorm bathrooms, locker rooms, and clinic exam rooms rather than a residential privacy set.
24) Is a BEST 45H mortise lock body an alternative to the Schlage LV9444?
The BEST 45H bodies are heavy duty mortise lock bodies sold by function: the 45HCAC is public entrance function with field reversible operation and the 45HCAINL is intruder function. Both match the LV9444 on heavy duty construction, but neither is a privacy function and both are lock bodies rather than a complete lockset. The LV9444 comes as a full non-keyed privacy set with matching lever, rose and finish both sides plus coordinating latch and strike.
25) Is a Sargent 130KB or 130W thumbturn a replacement part for the LV9444 coin turn side?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn from the 8200 Series and the 130W is a standard duty mortise thumbturn with a round backplate from the 7800 Series. Those are trim pieces for Sargent mortise bodies, not Schlage L Series trim. The LV9444 ships as a complete non-keyed mortise lockset in the L9000 Series with matching lever, rose and finish on both sides.
26) Should a Codelocks CL2255 be specified where an LV9444 would go?
Only on a lighter opening. The Codelocks CL2255 is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch in brushed steel from the CL2000 Series. The LV9444 is a heavy duty Grade 1 mortise lockset with a 1 inch throw stainless deadbolt and a 3/4 inch throw stainless latchbolt with anti-friction tongue. For a high-traffic commercial door the duty rating is the deciding difference.
27) Which mortise lock gives keyless entry with an audit trail where an LV9444 would otherwise be used?
For credentialed access on a mortise prep, the TownSteel FME-2000 is a Grade 1 heavy duty classroom mortise lockset with RFID for 1-3/4 inch doors and the FME-4000 adds electronic intruder classroom function with RFID. The Dormakaba Saffire LX-I-M002 is an electronic RFID mortise lockset with BLE mobile access at BHMA Grade 2, and the E-Plex 2066 is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock for wide stile. The LV9444 is a mechanical non-keyed privacy lock with no reader.
28) Is a Marks USA 21AC or 22AC ornamental iron mortise lock interchangeable with an LV9444?
No. The Marks USA 21AC and 22AC are entrance double cylinder ornamental iron mortise locks with a round knob, built for a 1 inch door. The LV9444 requires a 1-3/4 inch door and uses a lever. The narrow iron-door case will not fill a standard 1-3/4 inch mortise pocket, and a double cylinder entrance function is keyed on both sides rather than a privacy thumbturn and coin turn.
