Overview

Grade 1, Mortise Locks Purpose-built to serve the commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality industries, Schlage Performance Series™ locks feature exceptional quality and style at a highly competitive price point. The PM Series offers 26 functions, including three electrified, and four mortise deadbolt functions, all made to meet Schlage’s rigorous quality standards. With popular levers and finish options, Schlage's full key system security line up, and its durable design, you can meet needs for both security and style. They are made to suite with other Allegion products to present a quality, complete door hardware solution and provide a consistent user experience throughout your building or complex. Schlage PM050P TWOA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage PM050 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
Yes. 1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard door thickness for the PM050, with 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) as the minimum. It will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock position in the door, and that is available in EE only.
2) Do I have to order the PM050 handed, or can it be reversed on site?
Handing is not a separate order decision. The PM050 chassis is field reversible, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can flip it at the door without extra parts.
3) How does the PM050 entrance/office function actually work day to day?
Key cylinder outside, thumbturn inside, with a latchbolt and a deadlocking auxiliary latch. The lever retracts the latch from either side. You lock the outside lever either with the key outside or by turning the inside thumbturn, and the key outside unlocks that lever and retracts the latch. Turning the inside lever retracts the latch but does not unlock the outside, so the room stays secured until someone deliberately unlocks it. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress.
4) Can I order the PM050 without a cylinder so I can key it to my building's system?
Yes. Cylinder choices are B (less SFIC), J (less FSIC), L (less conventional 6-pin cylinder), P (conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5), or T (FSIC construction core). Pick one of the less-cylinder options if your locksmith is supplying cores from an existing small format or full size interchangeable core system, T if you need a construction core during turnover, or P if you want a conventional 6-pin cylinder supplied with the lock.
5) Will a Schlage PM Series mortise lock drop into an existing L Series mortise pocket?
Not without checking the prep. The PM case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm), and Schlage states that PM and L Series case and cover holes differ. The pocket depth may suit, but mounting holes will not line up like for like, so treat an L Series changeout as a prep verification job rather than a straight swap.
6) I need a mortise lock for a corridor or closet door with no locking at all - what should I use instead?
For a straight passage opening, look at the Falcon MA101, a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with passage/hall/closet function and field reversible operation, which is also fire rated. Hager's 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset, the 3810S with rose trim and the 3810E with escutcheon trim. The PM050 itself has a key cylinder outside and inside thumbturn, so it carries hardware a pure passage opening does not need.
7) The PM050 lets a thumbturn unlock the outside lever - what do I use for a door that must stay locked to the public at all times?
A storeroom function removes that occupant control. The Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with an Arcadia lever, and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a heavy duty Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option for a 1-3/4 inch door. On the PM050 the inside thumbturn unlocks the outside lever, which is what makes it an office door rather than a storeroom door.
8) What mortise lock should I specify for a classroom instead of the PM050?
Classroom function mortise locks in the set include the Corbin Russwin ML2003, a Grade 1 ML2000 Series classroom lockset for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Cal-Royal NM8070, a heavy duty Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch on a 1-3/4 inch door. For classroom security with a visual indicator, the Marks USA LA318GJ is a Grade 1 classroom security indicator mortise lockset with ANSI strike and a steel escutcheon measuring 8-1/2 inches by 2-3/4 inches by 7/16 inch. The PM050 is an entrance/office function, so it does not give a teacher keyed control of the inside lever.
9) I need credential access on an office door - what electronic mortise lock replaces the PM050?
Several electronic mortise locks cover the same door. The Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating in Greenwich trim, right hand. The LEBMB-ADD is a Grade 2 mobile-enabled mortise lock with push button and LED covering privacy, office and apartment functions on a 1-3/4 inch door with a 3 hour fire rating. The Accentra NTM623-NR nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock uses a capacitive touchscreen keypad with cylinder override and no deadbolt. The PM050 is mechanical, with no electronic operation.
10) The PM050 has a 2-3/4 inch backset - what mortise locks use a different backset?
Baldwin's mortise lock bodies run a 2-1/2 inch backset: the 6301LS is an entry/apartment lever by lever body for doors 1-3/4 inch and over, and the 6310 is an entry/storeroom knob by knob body for doors 1-3/8 inch and over. The PM050 is offered in a 2-3/4 inch backset only, so a pocket cut for a 2-1/2 inch backset will not receive it without rework.
11) Can I match the PM050 to the other doors in my building so everything looks the same?
That is what the PM Series is built for. These locks are made to suite with other Allegion products, and the PM mortise locks share lever and rose styles with the PT Series tubular locks, so a corridor of mortise openings and interior tubular openings can carry the same lever and rose appearance in the same finish.
12) Is the PM050 thumbturn acceptable for an ADA opening?
The thumbturn style used on the PM Series is ADA qualified, and the trim is a lever rather than a knob, so the operable hardware suits accessible openings.
13) What else could I buy instead of the Schlage PM050 for an entrance/office opening?
Cal-Royal's NM8050 is the closest cross-brand equivalent we carry, a heavy duty Grade 1 entrance/office mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors. Hager's 3850E is a Grade 1 office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, non-keyed, for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors, so it suits a thicker door than the PM050's standard 1-3/4 inches but gives up the outside key. For a full heavy duty keyed line, the Corbin Russwin ML2000 Series covers the same openings.
14) How far apart are the cylinder and thumbturn from the lever on the PM050? I need to lay out the door prep.
Spacing on the PM Series is 3-7/8 inches (98 mm) from lever to cylinder and 2-11/16 inches (68 mm) from lever to thumbturn hub. Use the PM Series template rather than a generic mortise template, since the case and cover hole pattern is specific to PM.
15) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for the PM050's thumbturn side?
No. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn built for the 8200 Series, and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate for the 7800 Series - both are trim components, not lock bodies. The PM050 is a complete Grade 1 mortise lock whose thumbturn hub sits 2-11/16 inches from the lever, with an ADA qualified thumbturn style already part of the trim.
16) What do I use for a restroom or bedroom door where the PM050 entrance/office function is wrong?
Use a privacy function. The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick. Both give occupant-side privacy control rather than the keyed outside access the PM050 provides.
17) What mortise lock should I use on a behavioral health door instead of the PM050?
For anti-ligature openings, TownSteel's MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty stainless steel anti-ligature lever mortise lockset with passage function for a 1-3/4 inch door, and the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset, ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. The PM050 uses conventional zinc lever trim on roses or an N escutcheon.
18) Is a Sargent 4874 or Kaba Ilco 185 mortise deadbolt an alternative to the PM050?
Not as a one-for-one. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset in the 4870 Series, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt - both are deadbolt-only bodies with no latch and no lever. The PM050 retracts its latchbolt by lever from either side and keeps the inside lever free for immediate egress, so a deadbolt alone will not serve an office door that needs latching and egress.
19) I need access control wired back to a panel - what replaces the PM050 mortise lock body?
The Command Access ML190 Series motorized mortise lock is a heavy-duty storeroom function body with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC, and the BEST 45HW is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation. Both take door wiring the PM050 does not, since the PM050 is a mechanical lock.
20) Can I use a BEST 45H mortise lock body in the same prep as the PM050?
The BEST 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body is a public entrance function with field reversible operation, and the 45HCA Series body offers an intruder function - both are lock bodies rather than complete locksets. Handing is not the obstacle, since the PM050 is field reversible too, but the PM050 case measures 4-7/16 by 6-1/16 by 1 inch with its own cover hole pattern, so confirm the pocket and cover prep before swapping bodies.
21) What mortise lock fits a door thinner or thicker than the PM050 range?
The PM050 is standard at 1-3/4 inches with a 1-3/8 inch minimum and fits up to 2-1/2 inches when door thickness and position are specified. If you are working thinner stock, the Marks USA 21AC and 22AC ornamental iron mortise locks are built for a 1 inch door. For electronic locks on narrower door stock, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR and DL3500CR Grade 1 classroom mortise locks cover 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inches.
22) What mortise lock should I use for a dormitory corridor door rather than the PM050?
The Sargent 7925 is a Grade 1 heavy duty dormitory exit function mortise lock in the 7900 Series with rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The PM050 has a 1 inch throw stainless deadbolt available in the case as well, but its function is entrance/office - key or thumbturn controls the outside lever rather than throwing a dormitory deadbolt from the room side.
23) What keyless pushbutton mortise lock can go on the same office door as the PM050?
The Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 Series is an electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock for wide stile doors, and the PowerPlex P2066 Series is a mortise lock in the PowerPlex 2000 Series. For card plus pushbutton on a back to back opening, the E-Plex E5086 is a Grade 1 entry/egress electronic pushbutton and card lock. The PM050 takes mechanical cylinders instead - it can be ordered with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5, or less SFIC, less FSIC or less conventional cylinder.
24) Is the PM050 a mechanical lock or does it need power and wiring?
Purely mechanical. There is nothing electronic in the PM050, so no wiring, no power transfer hinge and no access control panel. If you need credential or keypad access on a mortise opening, the Schlage CO-100 standalone keypad mortise lock or the BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock are the routes to that.
25) Is the Codelocks CL2255 a lighter-duty option next to the PM050?
The Codelocks CL2255 is a medium duty electronic tubular mortise latch in the CL2000 Series, finished in brushed steel. It sits a duty class below the PM050, which is a Grade 1 commercial mortise lock with an ANSI F01 designation and a cold rolled steel case with zinc dichromate plating.
