1) What backset does the Schlage PM050 mortise lock use, and will it work in an existing mortise pocket?
Backset is 2-3/4 inches only, so the door has to be prepped for a 2-3/4 inch mortise centerline. The lock case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). One thing to check before you pull an older Schlage L Series body out: PM and L Series case and cover holes differ, so the pocket depth may be fine while the mounting holes are not.
2) Will a Schlage PM Series mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door or a thick 2 inch door?
1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard door thickness for the PM Series, with 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) the minimum it will go down to. It also fits doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but above 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock position in the door, and that is available on the EE option only.
3) Do I have to order the Schlage PM050 handed, left or right?
No handing to specify. The PM050 is field reversible, so one lock covers either swing and you set the hand during installation. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares, since a single part number covers every door in the building.
4) What do I have to choose when ordering a Schlage PM050 with the tubular lever?
Four decisions. Cylinder: B less SFIC, J less FSIC, L less conventional 6-pin, P conventional 6-pin keyed 5, or T FSIC construction core. Trim: A rose, C rose, D rose or N escutcheon. Finish: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, or 643E aged bronze. Lever style is the tubular (TLR) design.
5) I need a mortise lock for a corridor or closet door with no locking at all - what should I use instead of the PM050?
Go to a straight passage function. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E cover passage function on a 2-3/4 inch backset with rose and escutcheon trim respectively. The PM050 carries a key cylinder outside and inside thumbturn, so it does more than a closet or hall door needs.
6) For a storeroom door that should stay locked, what is the alternative to the PM050?
Use a storeroom function instead.
