Schlage PT170 ATHA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Schlage PT170 dummy lever match the passage and privacy levers already on my other doors?
If the rest of the building is Schlage PT Series, yes. The PT170 uses the same 10 lever designs (Athens, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Neptune, Playa, Rhodes, Selena, Tubular and Two) and the same A, C and D roses as the latching functions, so the inactive leaf reads identically to the active one. The PT Series also suites with Schlage PM Series mortise locks, which share the same lever and rose styles, so a building running mortise locks on corridor doors and tubular on offices can still carry one look throughout.
2) What door prep does the Schlage PT170 dummy trim need, and can I mount it on an existing 2-1/8 inch bore?
Rose size decides it. The C and D large roses fit a 2-1/8 inch (54 mm) bore and the ANSI/SDI A250.14 door prep, so they drop onto a standard commercial hole. The small A rose fits a 1-7/8 inch (48 mm) cross bore prep. Pick the rose to suit the hole that's already in the door and you avoid re-prepping.
3) Is the Schlage PT Series ADA compliant for lever return?
Compliance depends on which lever you pick. The PT Series complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings, and the levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch (13 mm) or less are Longitude, Neptune, Rhodes and Tubular. If the spec on your drawing calls for a returned lever, order one of those four.
4) Can I put a PT170 dummy lever on a fire rated door?
Careful here. The UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 fire listing on the PT Series is stated for the Passage PT10 and Privacy PT40 locks, at 3-hour A label on a single 4'0" x 8'0" fire door. That rating is written against those two latching functions, not the dummy trim. A fire door assembly needs a latching device anyway, so a dummy lever is not what closes and latches that opening.
5) Will a Corbin Russwin TL3710 work as a replacement for a Schlage PT170?
No, they do different jobs. The PT170 is single dummy trim: a fixed lever on one side only, with no latch and no chassis, used as a door pull or as matching inactive trim. The Corbin Russwin TL3710 is a passage function tubular lockset, so its lever retracts a latch and the door actually latches shut. Put the TL3710 on the leaf that has to operate and keep the PT170 on the inactive leaf or the fixed-pull location.
6) My spec calls for Grade 1 on this opening. Is the PT170 acceptable?
The Schlage PT170 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2 and carries A156.39 Grade AAA in Security, Durability and Finish. If the drawing requires Grade 1 operating hardware, the Corbin Russwin TL3710 is a Grade 1 tubular lockset in passage function and the Corbin Russwin HP3010 is a Grade 1 tubular lock in passage function with HPSK paddle trim. Keep in mind the PT170 is dummy trim with no latch, so a Grade 1 substitute only applies where the opening needs a working latch in the first place.
7) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage PT170 dummy lever?
No. PT Series trim is field-reversible, so one part covers a left or right hand door and the installer sets it on site. That's a real advantage for a property manager buying a box of them for a building without having to survey every opening first.
8) What ANSI grade is the Schlage PT170 and is it rated for commercial traffic?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 2 tubular lock, and carries ANSI/BHMA A156.39 Grade AAA in Security, Durability and Finish. The PT Series is built for commercial real estate, retail, multifamily and hospitality use, so a Grade 2 spec is appropriate for tenant and office doors rather than high-abuse entrances.
9) What backset and latch throw does the Schlage PT Series latching hardware use?
Cataloged backset is 2-3/4 inch. The PT10 ships an adjustable latch covering 2-3/8 inch (60 mm) to 2-3/4 inch (70 mm), while the PT40 uses a non-adjustable latch, 2-3/4 inch standard or 2-3/8 inch optional. Latchbolt is stainless steel with a 1/2 inch (13 mm) throw, and the standard strike is a square corner T-strike with dust box, 1-1/8 inch x 2-3/4 inch with a 1-1/8 inch lip. Those are the two backsets you will find in almost any existing commercial door, so retrofits usually land on the prep that's already there.
10) I need a passage lever, not a dummy. What tubular lockset should I look at instead?
A dummy has no working latch, so for a door that needs to close and stay closed you want a passage function. ZenSupply carries the Corbin Russwin TL3710, a Grade 1 tubular lockset in passage function, and the Corbin Russwin HP3010 with HPSK paddle trim, Grade 1 passage, listed for 1-3/4 inch doors. Both are Grade 1 rather than the Grade 2 the PT Series carries, which matters if the spec on your job calls for Grade 1.
11) Is the Schlage PT170 keyed, and can it be keyed into my master key system?
There is no cylinder in it. The PT170 is non-keyed and has no chassis, so there's nothing to key and nothing to bring into a master key system. It's fixed trim. Anywhere you need keyed control on that leaf, the dummy is the wrong function.
12) What do I need to specify to order a Schlage PT170 dummy trim?
Three choices: lever design (10 to pick from, Athens through Two), rose design (A, C or D), and finish (613, 619, 622, 625, 626 or 643E). Handing you can skip, since the trim is field reversible. The rose choice is the one to get right first, because A fits a 1-7/8 inch cross bore while C and D fit a 2-1/8 inch bore.
13) I need a lever that latches on one leaf and matching trim on the other. What pairs with a dummy lever?
Pair the operating leaf with a passage tubular lockset such as the Corbin Russwin TL3710 in the TL3700 series, which is a Grade 1 passage function lock, and use the Schlage PT170 single dummy on the inactive leaf where you only need a pull and matching appearance. Note that the two come from different manufacturers, so the lever and rose shapes will not match; the PT170 is offered in 10 lever designs including Athens, Rhodes and Longitude and in A, C and D roses if visual continuity across the pair matters.
14) What should I use where staff go through with full hands and cannot grasp a lever?
Look at the Corbin Russwin HP3010 with HPSK paddle trim, a Grade 1 tubular lock in passage function in the HP3000 series, fitted to 1-3/4 inch doors. A paddle can be operated with a forearm or hip. The Schlage PT170 is fixed dummy trim with no latch to retract, so it does not serve a through-traffic opening at all; it is for a pull or inactive-leaf location.
15) What finishes does the Schlage PT Series come in, and are the levers plated to match?
Six finishes: 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. Levers are pressure cast zinc plated to match the finish specified, and the roses are stamped brass plated to match as well, so the trim reads consistently against the rest of the PT and PM hardware in the building.
16) Is the Schlage PT170 an electronic or access control lock?
No, it's mechanical trim with no electronics at all, so no wiring, no power transfer hinge and no credential reader. For openings that need electrified control you'd be looking at a different product line entirely.
17) Does a dummy lever need a backset and a strike like a regular lockset?
The Schlage PT170 is fixed trim with no latch or chassis, so it mounts to the face of the door rather than working through a cross bore into a strike. Operating tubular locksets such as the Corbin Russwin TL3710 in passage function or the Corbin Russwin HP3010 do require the latch bore, backset and strike prep in the frame. If the door is already prepped for an operating lockset, that prep is what those Corbin Russwin passage locks are for.
