1) Will the Schlage PT40 privacy lock fit a 2-3/8 inch backset door, or is it 2-3/4 only?
The PT40 ships with a non-adjustable latch, so the backset is fixed at whatever you order. Standard is 2-3/4 inches; 2-3/8 inches is an ordering option. That is different from the PT10 passage function, which comes with an adjustable latch covering 2-3/8 to 2-3/4 inches. So if you have a mix of backsets across a building, you have to know each opening before you order PT40s, or you will be pulling latches back out.
2) What bore size does the Schlage PT40 need in the door?
It depends on which rose you pick. C and D large roses fit a 2-1/8 inch bore and the ANSI/SDI A250.14 door prep. The A small rose fits a 1-7/8 inch cross bore prep. That matters on retrofits: if your existing doors are prepped 1-7/8, order the A rose rather than reboring 180 openings.
3) Will the Schlage PT40 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The latchbolt is stainless with a 1/2 inch throw, which is normal tubular latch throw, so it will engage a standard tubular strike. The strike supplied is 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, square corner, and a square corner T-strike with dust box at 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inches with a 1-1/8 inch lip is the standard option. Round corner T-strike, full lip, and a 1-5/8 x 2-1/4 inch strike with 1-1/2 inch extended lip are the other choices. If your frame is prepped round corner or needs a longer lip to reach across the gap, specify it rather than assuming the box strike drops in.
4) Can the Schlage PT40 privacy lock go on a fire rated bathroom door?
Yes. The PT40 privacy lock is UL 10C and CAN/ULC-S104 tested for a 3-hour A label single fire door up to 4'0" x 8'0". It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2, and rated Grade AAA in Security, Durability and Finish under A156.39.
5) How does someone get into a bathroom if the Schlage PT40 is locked from inside?
Two ways out of a lockout. The outside rose has a privacy-pin access hole: push the supplied allen key through it and the button releases, unlocking the outside lever. And the latch is restoring, so turning the inside lever, or simply closing the door, pops the button back out. Inside lever is always free for egress regardless of the button.
6) Is the Schlage PT40 keyed, and can I put it on a bathroom that needs staff access with a key?
Non-keyed. The PT40 is a bath and bedroom privacy function only: push button inside, emergency pin release outside, no cylinder and no key. If your facility needs a keyed override on a restroom or a resident unit door, a privacy function is the wrong pick and you want a keyed lock from the same PT family or a PM Series mortise lock instead.
7) Can I match the Schlage PT40 privacy lock to the other locks in my building?

No. The Schlage PT40 is a privacy lock for bath/bedroom use: the outside lever is made inoperative by a push button in the inside rose, with an emergency release privacy-pin access hole in the outside rose. The Corbin Russwin TL3710 is a passage function tubular lockset, meaning it has no locking mechanism at all and both levers always retract the latch. A TL3710 on a bathroom door leaves the door unlockable. Use the TL3710 where you want a latched but never locked opening, and the PT40 where the occupant needs to secure the door from inside.
9) Do I have to order the Schlage PT40 left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The PT40 is field reversible, so one part number covers both hands and you can stock a single lever style and finish across a building.
10) Which Schlage PT40 levers meet accessibility requirements?
