Schlage S51P SAT 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Schlage S51 entrance lever fit a 2-3/8 inch backset door prep, or do I need 2-3/4?
Either. The S51 ships with Schlage's 16-203 latch, which is adjustable for a 2-3/8 inch or 2-3/4 inch backset, so one part covers both of the standard bored preps. The latch face is a 1 inch x 2-1/4 inch square corner. If your existing door has a 1-1/8 inch latch face prep, the included A501-878 latch adapter handles it, and the G506-815 sleeve covers a 1 inch housing bore.
2) Will the Schlage S51 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
The S51 comes with the 10-001 strike: a square corner T-strike with a box, 1-1/8 inch x 2-3/4 inch with a 1-1/8 inch lip length. If your frame already has a square corner strike cut of that size, the lock drops straight in. Round corner or ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike preps will need the frame strike changed or the opening re-prepped, since the square corner T-strike will not cover them.
3) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Schlage S51 lever lock?
Only for the Flair lever. The S51 chassis itself is non-handed, so Jupiter, Neptune and Saturn levers install on a left or right hand door with no handing call-out. Flair is the exception: pick RH or LH when you order it.
4) What does the S51 entrance function actually do when someone locks the door?
Push the turn-button on the inside lever and the outside lever locks; a key from outside locks or unlocks it too. The inside lever is always free to exit, so it never traps anyone in the room. That is the F81 entrance function, and it is the one to use on an office or apartment door where the occupant controls the lock from inside rather than a storeroom door that stays permanently locked.
5) Should I order the Schlage S51 entrance lever or a storeroom function lock?
Depends on who controls the door. The S51 is entrance function: the occupant locks and unlocks the outside lever with the inside turn-button, so it suits offices, apartments and tenant spaces. A storeroom lock keeps the outside lever locked at all times and only a key retracts the latch, which is what you want on a mechanical room or supply closet nobody should be able to leave unsecured. In the same S Series, the S80 is storeroom and the S70 is classroom. For non-keyed openings the S10 passage and S40 bath/bedroom privacy cover it.
6) Can I put the Schlage S51 on a labeled fire door?
Yes. The S Series is UL/cUL listed for A label single doors up to 4 feet by 8 feet, so the S51 is acceptable on a labeled single opening within that size. It is a keyed cylindrical lock, so it works with a self-closing labeled door assembly in the usual way.
7) How do I order Schlage S51 locks so one key opens every apartment door I manage?
Choose KA (keyed alike) at the keying step and every lock on that order takes the same key. KD (keyed different) is the standard and gives each door its own key. Two keys ship with the lock. If you run a master key system, or need Everest 29 restricted keyways or Primus XP, note it in the special cylinder and keying field on the order. Everest 29 patented keyways are the default unless you specify otherwise.
8) Can I get the Schlage S51 to take my building's existing small format interchangeable cores?
Yes. Order the J cylinder option for Schlage FSIC less core and drop your own cores in, or R to get the lock with a Schlage FSIC core cylinder supplied. P gives a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the 123 keyway, and L is less conventional cylinder if your locksmith is fitting cylinders on site. Choosing J or L means you must supply the cylinder or core yourself to finish the opening.
9) What is a Grade 2 alternative to the Schlage S51 entrance lever from another brand?
The Hager 2525 is the closest straight swap we carry: a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever, rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors. The Falcon B511CP6D is another Grade 2 cylindrical lever in entry/office function, medium duty. If you want a Grade 1 chassis on the same opening, the Dexter C1000 entry/office lever covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is Grade 2 with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway, which matters if the building is already keyed to Schlage C.
10) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage S51 entrance lever from another manufacturer?
The Schlage S51 is a Grade 2 cylindrical entrance leverset in which the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key or by turn-button on the inside lever, with the inside lever always unlocked. The Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever lock with an entry/office function at a medium duty level. Both land in the same grade and lock type as the S51, so either is a workable cross-brand equivalent when the opening calls for a keyed lever with an inside turn-button entry function.
11) What should I use instead of a Schlage S51 on a high traffic door that needs Grade 1?
The S51 is a Grade 2 lock, built for interior light commercial use such as small hotels, laboratories, office tenant space and apartment buildings. For an opening that has to be specified Grade 1 with a keyed lever, the Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lock is a Grade 1 clutching cylindrical lever lock covering 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, giving the same key-plus-inside-control entry pattern at a higher ANSI grade. The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 electrified cylindrical lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors when the door also needs access control wiring.
12) The door needs to stay locked at all times with no turn-button. What takes the place of a Schlage S51 there?
On the S51 the outside lever can be left unlocked by the inside turn-button, which is exactly what a storeroom opening must not allow. For a door that stays locked from the outside and is entered only by key, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom leverset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both keep the outside lever fixed rather than leaving lock state to whoever is inside.
13) Does a Schlage S51 work on a classroom door, or is a different function needed?
The S51 is an entrance function, so the inside turn-button controls the outside lever, which is not how a classroom opening is meant to be secured. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Dexter C1000 Series Classroom lock is a Grade 1 clutching keyed classroom lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a classroom security function with locking from both sides by key, the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security is the Grade 1 option.
14) Will a Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever accept the same keys as a Schlage S51?
Not by default. The Schlage S51 ships with Everest 29 patented keyways as standard unless specified otherwise, and its conventional cylinder option is a 6-pin 123 keyway. The Cal-Royal AG00 is an entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum lock with a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. A Schlage C keyway peer will not operate on an Everest 29 key, so a building keyed on Everest needs the S51 ordered to that system or the peer cylinder changed to match.
15) Is the Schlage S51 heavy enough for an apartment building or small hotel corridor door?
It is built for exactly that. The S51 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical lock that meets or exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2, with heat-treated steel locking components and solid pressure cast zinc levers on independent torsion springs. Schlage positions the S Series for interior use in light commercial work: small hotels, labs, office tenant space and apartments. For an exterior entry or a high-traffic main door, step up to a Grade 1 cylindrical lock instead.
16) What finishes does the Schlage S51 come in for matching the rest of a building's hardware?
Seven: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. All four lever designs share one matching rose design, so a mixed-lever floor still reads consistent. Split finishes and split styles are a sales-center order and carry extended manufacturer lead times from Schlage.
17) I need matching passage and privacy levers to go with my keyed entrance locks. What goes with the Schlage S51?
Stay inside the S Series and the trim matches: S10 passage for corridor and closet doors, S40 for bath and bedroom privacy, and S170 single dummy trim for the inactive leaf of a pair or a false door. All share the same four lever designs and single rose, so a floor of mixed functions looks like one specification. If you are mixing brands, the Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever and the BEST 7KC single dummy trim is a Grade 2 dummy, but neither will match Schlage rose and lever styling.
18) Is the Schlage S51 a mortise lock or a cylindrical lock, and what prep does the door need?
Cylindrical, sometimes called tubular or bored. It goes into a round cross-bore through the door face with an edge bore for the latch, not the deep rectangular pocket a mortise lock needs. If your doors are already prepped for a standard bored lockset, the S51 fits that prep with the supplied 16-203 latch at 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. A door cut for a mortise lock is a different opening and needs a mortise body, not this.
19) Is there a lighter duty entrance lever than the Schlage S51 for a residential grade opening?
The S51 is a Grade 2 commercial lock rated heavy duty. Where the opening does not need a commercial grade, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. Both perform the same entry job as the S51 at a lower ANSI grade; use them on tenant interior doors rather than on the shared corridor or amenity doors where a Grade 2 lock is specified.
20) Can a Falcon B101 or Accentra 5301LN be used in place of a Schlage S51?
No, those are not substitutes even though they are the same grade and lock type. The Schlage S51 is keyed and ships with two keys. The Falcon B101 is a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, and the Accentra 5301LN Augusta is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever in a passage/closet function. Passage levers latch but never lock, so they suit a corridor or closet door, not the entry door the S51 is specified for. The keyed peer to reach for instead is the Hager 2525 Grade 2 entry lock.
21) I need a keyed entrance lock but the existing hardware is knobs, not levers. What matches a Schlage S51 function in a knob?
The S51 is a lever set, ADA compliant in its four lever designs. The Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and conventional cylinder for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, which reproduces the same entrance behavior of key outside and pushbutton inside in a knob trim. Note that levers, not knobs, are what carry the ADA compliance called out on the S51, so on an accessible route the lever is the one to keep.
22) What matching non-keyed trim goes with a Schlage S51 on the other doors of the same suite?
The S51 is one keyed function in the S Series, which also offers S10 passage, S40 bath and bedroom privacy and S170 single dummy trim in the same lever designs and rose, so the suite matches from within the series. If the non-keyed openings are being sourced across brands instead, the Accentra 4601LN is a Grade 2 passage cylindrical lever with Augusta trim, the Hager 2510 is a Grade 2 passage lever with the Withnell design for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a Grade 2 single dummy trim lever. Those will not carry the Schlage lever profile, so the visual match across the suite comes only from staying in the S Series.
23) Is a keypad leverset an alternative to a Schlage S51 for an apartment or office door?
The S51 is a mechanical lock, not electronic, and is keyed with a single cylinder. Where the goal is to stop issuing keys, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Both trade the cylinder for a code, which changes how the door is rekeyed and how tenants are turned over; the S51 keeps a conventional or full size interchangeable core cylinder that can be master keyed on an existing Schlage system.
24) What is the difference between a Schlage S51 and a Baldwin 5103 or Deltana Claremont entry lever?
The Schlage S51 is a commercial Grade 2 cylindrical lock in pressure cast zinc with heat-treated steel locking components, meeting BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 and UL listed for A label single doors. The Deltana 5851 Claremont and Deltana 6201 Manchester are entry levers, the Manchester covering 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Baldwin Estate 5103 comes as passage, privacy and left or right hand half dummy levers with the 5048 rose. Those decorative lines are chosen for the trim design and the residential feel of the door; the S51 is chosen where the specification calls for a stated ANSI grade and a fire door listing.
25) The Schlage S51 is non-handed. Which comparable entrance levers also avoid handing on the order?
The S51 carries a non-handed door hand direction, with handing specified only when the Flair lever is chosen. Among the peers, the Falcon B101 is described as a Grade 2 cylindrical passage lever with a non-handed design, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. On the decorative side the Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy is ordered as a distinct left hand or right hand part, so hand has to be confirmed at the door before that one is placed.
26) Our building is standardized on Yale or Accentra hardware. Can a Schlage S51 be brought into that system?
The S51 uses Schlage cylinders, offered as a conventional 6-pin 123 keyway, a Schlage full size interchangeable core, or supplied less cylinder or less core so an existing core can be fitted. Where Yale hardware is already on the doors, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is how a Schlage keyed system reaches locks that were not built for it. Ordering the S51 with the less cylinder or FSIC less core option keeps the keying decision with whoever owns the building system.
27) Does the Schlage S51 need power or wiring run to the door?
No. The S51 is entirely mechanical, keyed with a cylinder and locked by the inside turn-button. There is no wiring, no transformer and no power transfer hinge to plan for. If the job actually calls for an electrified opening tied to access control, look at the Corbin Russwin CL33903, a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
