Securitron EMB-CL 48 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Securitron EMB exit bar latch the door, or do I still need a lock?
It is a switch bar, not a panic latch. No latchbolt, no strike, no dogging. The door is held shut by a magnetic lock; pushing the bar throws internal switches that release the lock so the door swings. Only 1/4 inch of movement activates it, and four individual switches share the job for redundant operation. The mag lock and its power supply are separate purchases, since what ships with the bar is the cable and armored door cord. If you want the door mechanically latched rather than magnetically held, that is a rim exit device: the Corbin Russwin ED5200 is a Grade 1 wide stile version, and the Adams Rite 8800 Series is the narrow stile equivalent.
2) Should I use an electromechanical exit bar or an electrified rim exit device on an access controlled door?
It comes down to what holds the door shut. If a magnetic lock does the holding, you want a switch bar like the Securitron EMB: it has no latch, it simply signals the mag to drop when someone pushes, through a DPDT 5 amp output. If the opening needs a mechanical latch in the frame, then an electrified rim exit device is the right family. The SDC S6136 Spectra S6000 Series is an electrified architectural rim device with a 4 inch wide stile and a 1-3/4 to 2 inch door thickness range, and the Dormakaba E2103 with 4908A trim is an electrified 36 inch rim device with classroom function. Neither the EMB nor those two is fire rated.
3) Will the Securitron EMB bar mount on the holes left by a TSB-3 or DSB bar?
Yes. The EMB uses the same mounting pattern as the TSB-3 and the DSB, and the hole pattern carried on its specs is listed as TSB and DSB, so a straight swap on those does not mean re-drilling. It also retrofits most competitors' mounting patterns. Where an older bar leaves holes that do not line up, order the TCP touch bar cover plates, a set of two in black anodized (TCP-BK) or clear anodized (TCP-CL); they cover unwanted holes from the previous bar, strengthen the mounting area, and tidy the face of the door.
4) What door widths does the Securitron EMB exit bar cover, and can it be cut to fit?
Three stock lengths, 36, 42 and 48 inches, each in black anodized or clear anodized. Any of them can be field cut for non-standard openings up to 48 inches, so an odd door width is handled by cutting the next size up rather than waiting on a special. Forty-eight inches is the ceiling; there is no longer EMB, so a wider leaf than that needs a different approach.
5) How does the Securitron EMB wire in, and what wiring comes with it?
Output is a DPDT contact rated 5 amps, which either drops the mag lock for free egress or starts the delay on an exit delay timer, depending how you land it. Operating voltage on the bar is listed as 12/24VDC. Sixteen feet of 22 AWG six conductor cable and an armored door cord ship with it, so the run from the bar across the hinge edge to the frame is already covered and does not need to be sourced separately. What you still supply is the lock itself and the power supply feeding it.
6) Can the Securitron EMB exit bar be used on an exterior door exposed to weather?
Only the W version. Adding the letter W to the front of the part number gets waterproof switches, which is what allows the bar to function in outdoor applications, for example WEMB-CL-42 for a 42 inch clear anodized weather-resistant bar.
