1) Should I order the Securitron GL1 gate lock fail-safe or fail-secure?
It comes down to what the gate has to do when power drops. Fail-safe (GL1-FS) releases with no power, which is what you want where the gate is part of an egress path or has to open for fire department access. Fail-secure (GL1-FL) stays locked through an outage, so a perimeter, stock, or storage yard gate keeps holding. One detail often decides it: the GMC gate lock mortise cylinder is specified for FL models only, so if you want a key to get you through a dead gate, that is the fail-secure side. Both modes are sold with or without latch monitoring, four orderable combinations total.
2) My vehicle gate has sagged and the leaves no longer line up. Will the Securitron GL1 still latch?
Yes, within reason. The GL1 uses a self-aligning receiver that compensates for gate misalignment and sag, so the bolt keeps finding the strike as the post moves through the seasons and the leaf settles. It is a surface mount unit, body on one member and receiver bracket opposite, which means you can shim or reposition the receiver on site instead of re-cutting a mortise when the gate shifts. Allow room for a body 7-1/4 inches high by 3-3/16 inches wide on a flat mounting face.
3) Does the Securitron GL1 gate lock come with a key cylinder?
No, the cylinder is ordered separately. The GL1 accepts a standard mortise cylinder with an Adams Rite MS cam, or Securitron's own GMC gate lock mortise cylinder, which is specified for the fail-secure (FL) models only. Cylinder length sets the spacer: a 1 inch cylinder takes a 1/4 inch spacer, 1-1/8 inch takes 3/8 inch, and 1-1/4 inch takes 1/2 inch. Get that pairing right or the cylinder either stands proud of the housing or will not reach the cam.
4) What power supply does a Securitron GL1 gate lock need, 12V or 24V?
Either one. The GL1 is automatic dual voltage, 12/24VDC, with nothing to jumper or adjust in the field. For sizing, figure 100 mA max at 12 VDC or 200 mA max at 24 VDC, so it will share a modest access control supply with a reader and a request-to-exit device. On a long run out to a gate, 24V gives you more headroom against voltage drop for the same conductor size.
5) Can I key a Securitron GL1 gate lock into my building's existing master key system?
You can. The GL1 takes a standard mortise cylinder with an Adams Rite MS cam, so a locksmith can supply that cylinder in the property's keyway and key it into the existing system rather than leaving the gate on a one-off key. Confirm the cylinder length before you cut it: 1 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/4 inch cylinders each call for a different spacer behind the housing (1/4 inch, 3/8 inch, and 1/2 inch respectively). Manual key override applies to the fail-secure side of the range.
6) What does the M in GL1-FSM and GL1-FLM add?
Latch monitoring. The M versions carry a latch status monitor that reports whether the bolt is actually thrown, instead of the panel only knowing what it commanded. On a gate at the far end of a lot that nobody can see from the office, that turns into a real lock status point at the head end, so the system can annunciate a gate left unsecured. Monitoring is offered on both fail modes, so you are not forced to give up fail-safe operation to get it.
7) Will the Securitron GL1 work on a sliding gate, or only swing gates?
Both. The GL1 is specified for electrically and manually operated gates, swinging or sliding, indoor or out, covering vehicle, pedestrian, and stock gate openings. Because it surface mounts rather than mortising into a frame, you are looking for a flat face roughly 7-1/4 by 3-3/16 inches on the gate member and a matching face opposite for the receiver bracket, which is usually easier to find on a tube-frame slider than a mortised lock case would be.
8) Can the GL1 gate lock be mounted outside through winter?
It is rated -40F to +140F (-40C to +60C) and built for indoor or outdoor gates, in a weather-resistant cast housing that also resists tampering. That range covers year-round exterior service across essentially all of the continental US and Canada, which is why it shows up on unheated perimeter and yard gates rather than only on covered entries.
9) Is the Securitron GL1 listed for use on a spec'd access control job?
The GL1 is UL 294 Listed and carries CAN/ULC-S533, so it answers the listing requirement spec writers put on access control system units on both sides of the border. It is classified as commercial, heavy duty hardware, which is the category most institutional and facility specifications call for on a perimeter or vehicle gate.
