Securitron M38DLS – Frequently Asked Questions
1) How much flat mounting space does the M38 Magnalock need on the door frame?
The M38 with its strike needs a minimum of 2.25 inches of flat mounting surface. The lock body itself measures 2-1/2 by 2-1/2 by 1-11/16 inches. If your frame stop or header has less than 2-1/4 inches of flat area, the strike won't land properly and you need a different mounting approach or a smaller footprint lock.
2) Do I need to set the M38 maglock for 12V or 24V before installing it?
No field adjustment, no jumper, no DIP switch. The M38 is automatic dual voltage and runs on either 12 or 24VDC as supplied. Current draw is 350mA at 12VDC and 170mA at 24VDC, which is what you size the power supply and wire run against.
3) Can a Securitron M38 Magnalock go on a fire rated door?
It is fire rated and carries UL 10C Listing along with CAN4-S104 and CAN/ULC Listing. It's also UL 1034 Burglary-Resistant Listed and California State Fire Marshal approved. Confirm your local authority accepts the release scheme you're wiring it into, since the maglock has to drop on fire alarm.
4) What does Senstat do on the M38 maglock, and do I need it?
Senstat reports the magnetic bond between the lock and the armature, so it tells you the door is actually locked rather than just closed. A door position switch only tells you the door is shut. If you're running a monitored or audited opening, or a guard station needs positive lock confirmation, order an S model such as the M38DS or M38DLS. For a simple access controlled closet, the plain M38 is enough.
5) Does the M38 Magnalock hold the door shut after power is cut?
No residual magnetism. The M38 uses a patented instant release circuit, so the magnet lets go immediately when power drops rather than clinging to the armature. That matters on egress and on fire alarm release, where a lock that sticks for a second or two is a real problem.
6) What ANSI grade is the Securitron M38 electromagnetic lock?
ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 3, listed under E08501-500 and E18531-500. Grade 3 is the entry tier in the electromagnetic lock standard, which lines up with where this lock is meant to go: interior, controlled traffic, inside an already secured perimeter. Institutional specs calling for Grade 1 on a perimeter opening will need a different model.
7) How does the M38 maglock mount, and is it hard to install?
It surface mounts on a bracket with minimal tools, using steel machine screws driven into blind finishing nuts. Wiring runs through a built-in internal wire access chamber, so you aren't fishing conductors around the outside of the housing. 9) Can I standardize on one maglock across interior doors in my building and just change the monitoring?
That works well with the M38. All seven versions share the same 600 lb lock body, the same 2-1/2 by 2-1/2 by 1-11/16 inch footprint, the same bracket mount and the same automatic 12/24VDC supply, so the template and power run don't change from door to door. You spec the plain M38 on ordinary closets and step up to M38DLST where you need door position, LED, bond sensing and tamper on the same opening.
10) Can I cover the exposed maglock body so it looks finished in a lobby?
Dress covers are offered for the M38 as a separate accessory, which is what you want on a visible interior opening. The lock itself comes in a brushed aluminum finish. Order the cover alongside the lock, since it doesn't come in the box with it.
