Securitron M62 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Securitron M62 maglock hold an exterior perimeter door?
That is exactly what the M62 is built for. It develops 1200 lbs of holding force with fully sealed, weatherproof electronics, and it operates from -40F to +140F, so it holds up on perimeter and exterior openings as well as interior ones. All ferrous surfaces are plated to MIL specification and the finish is brushed stainless (US32D/630). Securitron positions it for doors through which an intruder could get in and cause substantial economic loss.
2) What kind of door and frame can an M62 Magnalock be surface mounted on?
Hollow metal, concrete filled metal, wood, and glass doors with aluminum frames, including Herculite. There are also configurations for gates and fences. It surface mounts with minimal tools, using steel machine screws driven into blind finishing nuts, so the door leaf does not have to be through drilled on a standard install. Single and double door configurations are both covered.
3) Do I need the BondSTAT or DPS option on a maglock, and what is the difference?
They monitor two different things. BondSTAT (the B suffix) is a magnetic bond sensor that reports whether the lock is actually magnetically bonded to the armature, which is what an access control head end or fire alarm interface wants to see for positive lock status. The door position switch (the D suffix) reports only whether the door is closed. If you need both, order the M62BD; monitoring is not field addable, it has to be specified on the part number. M62 with no suffix has no monitoring at all.
4) Can I put a Securitron M62 on a gate or fence, and how do I run the wire?
Yes. Order one of the G models, which come with the gate conduit fitting, for example M62G, M62GB with BondSTAT, or M62GBD with BondSTAT and a door position switch. The universal threaded conduit fitting is 1/2 inch female to 3/4 inch male, so it lands on either common conduit size without an adapter. The lock ships with ten feet (3.05m) of jacketed stranded conductor and the electronics are fully sealed, which is what makes an outdoor gate run practical.
5) Does the M62 Magnalock need 12V or 24V, and how much current does it draw?
Either, with no jumper or field adjustment. Automatic dual voltage means the same lock runs on 12VDC or 24VDC as wired. Draw is 250mA at 12VDC and 150mA at 24VDC, so size the supply from whichever rail you are running and multiply by the number of locks on that circuit. On a multi door job the 24V figure is the one that keeps the power supply smaller.
6) Is the Securitron M62 UL listed and what grade is it?
UL and cUL listed, UL 10C listed, and ANSI/UL 294 listed for access control system units. It also carries CAN4-S104 and CAN/ULC-S533, CSA-C22.2 No.205, CSFM California State Fire Marshal approval, City of New York MEA approval, and CE to EN 50081-1(92) and EN 61000-6-2(99). It is ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 2, certification number E08501-1000. That listing package is usually what an institutional or municipal spec is asking for.
7) My door and frame do not line up for a standard maglock strike. What are the offset and split strike options?
Three strike variants cover the awkward openings. The offset strike (OS suffix, as in M62-OS or M62B-OS) shifts the armature when the door and frame faces do not sit flush. The split strike (SS suffix, M62-SS, M62B-SS, M62G-SS) is used where the armature has to be divided across the leaf. The shock absorbing strike mount, M62-SASM, is the one to reach for on a door that slams or takes heavy traffic. Pick the strike on the order line, since it is part of the model number rather than a separate add-on.
8) Is the M62 fire rated for use on a fire door?
The M62 is fire rated and carries a UL 10C listing along with the Canadian CAN4-S104 and CAN/ULC-S533 listings, plus California State Fire Marshal approval. Those are the listings a fire door assembly review normally asks for on an electromagnetic lock. It is a commercial rated product, not a residential one.
9) What is the difference between the M62 and M62F face drilled models?
Mounting method. The standard M62 mounts to the frame with the supplied hardware in the normal orientation; the face drilled M62F is prepped for fastening through the face of the lock body, which is what you use when the mounting surface will not take the standard prep. Face drilling can be combined with the other options, so M62FB adds the BondSTAT bond sensor, M62FD adds the door position switch, M62FBD adds both, and the FG variants add gate conduit on top.
10) Will a Securitron M62 stick or drag after it is de-energized?
No residual magnetism. The M62 uses a patented instant release circuit, so the armature lets go the moment power drops instead of holding on from leftover magnetism. That matters on egress: a door that drags for a second after a request to exit or a fire alarm release reads as a failed unlock to the person pushing on it.
11) Is a maglock the right choice, or should I use an electric strike?
A maglock like the M62 is the answer when you cannot or do not want to modify the lockset and frame prep. It holds the door with 1200 lbs of magnetic force from a surface mounted body and armature, works on glass and aluminum storefront and on gates where there is no frame to cut, and it is fail safe by nature: cut power and the door is open. An electric strike is the better fit where you need the door to stay mechanically latched during a power loss and where the frame can be prepped. Also budget for egress devices, because a maglock has no mechanical latch of its own and the release path has to come from the access control side.
12) Does the M62 come with everything I need, or do I have to order accessories?
The lock body, armature, mounting screws with blind finishing nuts, and ten feet of jacketed stranded conductor are the base package. What you add depends on the opening: hardware accessories are offered to configure inswing, outswing, and header conditions, dress covers to hide the mounting, and split or offset strike plates for doors that will not sit flush. Monitoring (BondSTAT, DPS) and gate conduit are not accessories, they are built into the part number, so decide those before the order goes in.
13) Will the M62 Magnalock match the other door hardware finish in my building?
One finish across the range: architectural brushed stainless steel, US32D/630. That is the standard commercial satin stainless that lines up with most Grade 1 and Grade 2 lever trim, exit devices, and hinges already hanging in a commercial building. Dress covers are available if you want to conceal the mounting on a visible opening.
