1) Will a Securitron M68 maglock hold a high-traffic interior door secure?
The M68 Magnalock develops 1200 lbs [544 kg] of holding force, which is the level Securitron puts on interior and perimeter openings where a break-in would mean serious loss. It's a commercial-duty electromagnetic lock, bracket mounted to the frame, with a patented instant release circuit so there's no residual magnetism holding the armature after you drop power. That matters on a door cycled hundreds of times a day: it releases clean every time instead of sticking.
2) Can I put a Securitron M68 magnetic lock on a fire rated door?
Yes. The M68 is UL 10C Listed and carries CAN4-S104 and CAN/ULC-S533 listings, plus California State Fire Marshal approval, so it can go on a fire rated opening. It's also ANSI/UL 294 Listed for access control and rated ANSI/BHMA A156.23 Grade 2. Note that on a fire door the maglock has to release on fire alarm, which is a function of how the access control system is wired rather than the lock itself.
3) Does the M68 Magnalock need a 12 volt or 24 volt power supply?
Either one. The M68 is automatic dual voltage, 12/24VDC, with no jumper or field adjustment to set. It draws 250mA at 12VDC and 125mA at 24VDC. Size your supply from whichever rail you're feeding it on, and remember the higher draw is on 12 volts, so a 12VDC panel running several of these adds up faster than a 24VDC one.
4) What do the M68 suffix letters like D, L, S and T mean when ordering?
They're the monitoring options built into the lock, and you pick them on the order: D is a door position switch, L is the LED status indicator, S is Senstat (the magnetic bond sensor that reports the armature is actually held), and T is the anti-tamper switch. The full run is M68 with no monitoring, M68D, M68DL, M68DLS, M68DLST, M68DS, M68LS and M68S. There are eight builds and that's all of them. If your access control panel wants a door-secure input, you need Senstat, not just DPS; DPS tells you the door is closed, Senstat tells you the magnet is bonded.
5) Will the Securitron M68 mount on an aluminum storefront door?
It can, but plan on an offset strike. Securitron notes an offset strike may be required for proper installation of the M68 in aluminum frame door applications, because the narrow stile and the frame stop rarely leave the armature sitting flat against the magnet where it needs to be. Order the offset bracket with the lock rather than discovering it on site.
6) How much frame space does the M68 maglock body take up?
The M68 body measures 3-5/8 x 3-5/8 x 2 inches. That's the footprint you need clear on the frame soffit for the bracket, so check the head stop depth before you commit, particularly on a narrow aluminum header where a deeper lock would foul the door swing.
7) Is the M68 hard to install compared to a mortised or concealed maglock?
It's the easy end of the range. The M68 surface mounts with a bracket using minimal tools, and it has an internal wire access chamber so the run comes into the lock body without a separate junction. Fasteners are steel machine screws into blind finishing nuts. A concealed or mortise maglock means machining the frame and a full door prep; the M68 is what you use when you're retrofitting access control onto an existing opening and don't want to cut the frame.
8) Can the M68 Magnalock go on an exterior door or an unheated garage entrance?
Operating range on the M68 is +32 to +110F [0 to +43C]. It's specified for interior and perimeter doors, so a perimeter opening in a temperate climate is within scope, but an unconditioned space that drops below freezing is outside the rated range and you should be looking at a lock built for that environment instead.
9) I'm standardizing maglocks across a building. Which M68 model should I spec for doors tied into the access control head end?
For any opening the panel monitors, spec the M68DLS or M68DLST. DPS gives the panel a door open/closed contact, Senstat confirms the magnet is bonded (so a propped or shimmed door reports correctly), and the LED gives the tech a local status read during service. Add the T for tamper on doors where the lock itself is reachable. On doors that are simply held and never monitored, the plain M68 is the same 1200 lb lock without the extra conductors to pull.
10) Is the Securitron M68 battery powered or does it need a wired supply?
Wired. The M68 is not battery operated; it's an electromagnet that draws current the entire time the door is locked, so it needs a continuous 12 or 24VDC supply. Any building using these should plan for a backup power supply on the access control system, because when the power drops the lock releases and the door is open. That fail-safe behavior is normal for a maglock and it is what makes them acceptable on egress doors, but it also means the door has no security during an outage without battery backup at the panel.
11) What finish is the Securitron M68 and will it hold up in a corridor?
Brushed aluminum, and every ferrous metal surface on it is plated to MIL specification.
