1) Will the Securitron MCL-24 cabinet lock hold a display case door shut against someone pulling on it?
The MCL-24 magnetic cabinet lock delivers 170 lbs of holding force. That is enough for jewelry and museum cases, gun cabinets, pharmaceutical storage and cash drawers, where the goal is asset protection and tamper resistance rather than stopping a determined forced entry on a full-size opening. If you need door-rated holding on a person-sized door, you are looking at a full Magnalock instead of a cabinet lock.
2) How much room do I need inside a cabinet to surface mount a Securitron MCL magnetic lock?
The lock body measures 4-5/8 x 1-1/8 x 3/4 inches, so you need a clear run of about 4-5/8 inches along the frame member with 3/4 inch of depth behind the door face for the magnet, plus room for the armature on the door leaf. It surface mounts with steel machine screws and a minimum of tools, and a universal mounting bracket is in the box, so no mortising into the cabinet is needed.
3) Can a magnetic cabinet lock be used on a sliding cabinet door, or only a swinging one?
Both. The Securitron MCL works in swinging and sliding cabinet door applications, which is the main reason to pick a magnetic cabinet lock over a mechanical cam or drawer lock: there is no bolt that has to swing into a strike, just a magnet and an armature that meet flat. Any door or drawer that will physically accommodate the 4-5/8 x 1-1/8 x 3/4 inch body is a candidate.
4) What happens to a Securitron MCL cabinet lock when the power goes out?
It releases. A magnetic cabinet lock holds only while it is energized at 24VDC, so a power loss unlocks the cabinet. That is the right behavior where a cabinet has to be reachable in an emergency, and the wrong behavior for a gun cabinet or pharmaceutical cabinet you need secured through an outage, so plan on battery backup or a standby power supply on that circuit if the contents must stay locked when the building loses power.
5) Can I mount a Securitron MCL-24 in an outdoor enclosure or a walk-in cooler?
Yes. The electronics are fully sealed, tamper proof and weatherproof, and the operating range is -40 to +140F (-40 to +60C). All ferrous metal surfaces are plated to MIL specification. That covers unheated storage, exterior utility enclosures and refrigerated spaces.
6) How much wire comes with the Securitron MCL-24 and do I need to run conduit to the cabinet?
Six feet (1.8m) of jacketed, stranded conductor comes attached to the lock. At 84mA on 24VDC the load is small, so most installs splice that pigtail to a low voltage run back to the power supply or access control panel in a junction point inside the cabinet or millwork. The six foot lead is what you have to work with before you make that splice, so site the transition point accordingly.
7) Should I use a magnetic cabinet lock or a keyed cam lock on a pharmaceutical or evidence cabinet?
Pick the magnetic cabinet lock when the cabinet has to join the access control system. The MCL is for extending access control to cabinets and enclosures, so openings get logged and credentialed the same way doors are, and there is no key to issue or rekey. A keyed cam lock is the cheaper answer when you only need mechanical security and nobody needs an audit trail or remote release. The MCL also does not cut into the cabinet: it surface mounts with machine screws and a universal bracket.
8) Is the Securitron MCL-24 UL listed for use on a fire rated cabinet?
The MCL-24 is UL 10C Listed. UL 10C is the positive pressure fire test standard for door assemblies, so the lock itself carries that listing. Whether the assembly stays rated depends on the cabinet or enclosure it goes on, which is a question for that assembly's own listing.
9) Is there more than one model in the Securitron MCL magnetic cabinet lock line?
One: the MCL-24, a 24 volt magnetic cabinet lock in brushed stainless. There is no alternate voltage or alternate finish variant to specify, so the order is the part number and quantity. Anything you need beyond the lock, a 24VDC power supply, the credential reader or switch that controls it, and wire past the six foot pigtail, is ordered separately.
10) What finish is the Securitron MCL-24 cabinet lock, and will it match the stainless hardware on a display case?
Architectural brushed stainless steel, US32D/630. That is the standard commercial satin stainless finish, so it sits alongside 630 pulls, hinges and trim on casework and display fixtures without looking off. It is the only finish the MCL is built in.
