1) Will the Securitron SP-1 touch plate work on 12VDC, or do I need a 24V supply?
Either. The SP-1 runs on 12 or 24VDC, so it drops onto whatever supply is already feeding the mag lock or strike. Draw is 40mA at rest and 25mA when releasing, so it adds almost nothing to a power supply's budget.
2) Can I put a Securitron SP-1 exit plate over an existing single gang box?
That's what it's built for. The SP-1 plate is oversized so it covers a single gang cutout, which means an existing single gang box or a rough opening left by an old push button gets hidden rather than patched. The plate measures 5-3/4 by 1-1/2 inches.
3) Can the SP-1 touch sensor be mounted outside or in a parking garage?
No. The SP-1 is an indoor unit, rated +32 to +110F (0 to +43C). For an exterior or unconditioned opening, Securitron's WCC and WBB weather enclosures are offered for single gang push buttons, keyswitches and keypads.
4) Do I need a separate timer to hold a mag lock open with the Securitron SP-1?
No separate timer module needed. The SP-1 has an internal 0-25 second timer, so you set the unlock hold time at the plate itself. Its relay is DPST rated 2 amps, which handles the lock circuit plus a second set of contacts for something like an alarm shunt or door position input.
5) What happens if the touch sensor on the SP-1 stops responding? Is there a backup?
There's a built-in redundant button behind the sensing surface, so if the capacitive sense fails, pressing the plate still releases the door. That matters on an egress opening where a dead switch is a life safety problem.
6) How is a touch sense plate different from a regular mechanical push to exit button?
No moving parts. The SP-1 uses capacitive touch sensing rather than a mechanical plunger or switch, so there's nothing to wear out or stick from repeated cycles, and it activates on contact rather than on force. A conventional push button is the choice where you want tactile feedback or a mechanically latching action; the touch plate suits high traffic egress and hands-free use where a gloved or full hand just brushes the plate.
7) Do I have to order the exit label separately with the Securitron SP-1?
The SP-1 ships with a three part vinyl decal included. Beyond that, the SP-1L is the Touch To Exit label and the SP-1LH is the handicap decal version, so if you need the ISA symbol on an accessible opening, specify SP-1LH when you order.
8) Does the Securitron SP-1 give any visual confirmation that it fired?
A red LED is built into the backbox, so the person at the door and anyone commissioning the system can see the plate register the touch. Useful during a walk test when you're standing at the plate and can't hear the lock release down the corridor.
