The TSB Touch Sense Bar provides touch-triggered release of magnetically locked, non-fire-rated doors. Securitron TSB-CL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Securitron TSB touch sense bar on a fire-rated door?
No. The TSB Touch Sense Bar is built for touch-triggered release of magnetically locked, NON-fire-rated doors, and it's rated for indoor use only. On a fire-rated opening you need a mechanical fire exit device, not a mag-lock release bar. Where the TSB does fit is a mag-locked egress door on the interior of a building: touch the bar, even through light gloves or clothing, and an electronic sensor drops the lock. No mechanical movement is involved.
2) Will the TSB touch bar fit a 42 inch or 48 inch wide door?
Yes. The TSB comes in 36 inch, 42 inch and 48 inch bar lengths, in black anodized or clear anodized, and it can be field cut to suit non-standard openings up to 48 inches. So for anything between those sizes you order the next length up and trim it on site. Above 48 inches you're outside what the bar covers.
3) What door thickness does the Securitron TSB mount to, and what do I need for a thicker door?
The TSB is set up for doors up to 2-1/4 inches thick. Past 1-3/4 inches, if you want to through-bolt rather than rely on the standard fastening, order the TSB-TDM Through Door Mounting Kit. The bar itself installs on metal, aluminum or wood frame doors, so the substrate isn't the limiting factor, the thickness and the mounting method are.
4) How does the touch sense bar actually release the maglock, and what does it wire into?
Touching the bar activates a DPST relay rated 2 amps. No mechanical movement, no push travel. You can wire that relay to break power to the mag lock directly for free egress, or use it to start the delay on an exit delay timer where a delayed-egress sequence is required. The bar runs on either 12 or 24VDC and draws 40mA at rest, 25mA while releasing, so it sits easily on a shared access control supply. A backup push button is built in.
5) What is the difference between the standard TSB, the trailing edge timer version, and the dummy TSB?
Three different jobs. The standard Touch Sense Bar releases on touch and that's it. The Trailing Edge Timer version adds a 3 second timer so the relay holds released briefly after the hand comes off the bar, which keeps a door from re-locking while someone is still pushing through. The Dummy TSB has no electronics at all, just end caps and fasteners, and it's weather-resistant, so it goes on the opposite leaf of a pair to match appearance without duplicating the release function. Standard and timer versions come in black or clear anodized; the dummy comes in both finishes too.
6) Does the TSB touch bar meet the egress code requirement for no special knowledge or effort?
Yes, the TSB meets the "no special tools or knowledge" criteria in code requirements, which is what lets it serve as the release device on a mag-locked egress door. On the listings and approvals side it is UL/cUL, ANSI/UL 294 Listed, CSA-C22.2 No.205 Listed, California State Fire Marshal approved, MEA City of New York approved, and CE approved to EN 50091-1 and EN 61000-6-2. That MEA and CSFM pairing is usually what an AHJ in those jurisdictions asks for.
7) Can the TSB touch sense bar be installed on an exterior door?
No. The TSB is specified for indoor use only, and it's rated to operate from +32 to +110F (0 to +43C), so an unconditioned or exterior opening is outside its range. The Dummy TSB is the weather-resistant one in the family, but it has no release function, so it doesn't solve an exterior egress release. For an outside door, use an exterior-rated request-to-exit device instead.
8) Is wire included with the TSB or do I have to supply the door cord?
Wiring comes in the box: a 16 ft (4.8m) 22AWG 6 conductor cable plus an armored door cord to make the transition from frame to door. You don't need to source a separate door loop for a standard install.
9) Should I order the ElectroLynx version of the TSB?
Order ElectroLynx when the opening is being built with ElectroLynx quick-connect harnesses, typically an electrified frame and door package where you want plug connections instead of splices in the hinge transfer. The bar function is the same; it's the connector that differs. ElectroLynx TSBs are available in 36, 42 and 48 inch lengths in both black and clear anodized. If you're field-wiring to a standard maglock power supply, the regular TSB with the included 6 conductor cable is the one you want.
10) I'm taking off an old exit bar and the door has leftover mounting holes. Can I cover them?
Order the TCP cover plates, sold as a set of 2, in black anodized (TCP-BK) or clear anodized (TCP-CL) to match the bar. They cover unwanted mounting holes from a previously installed exit bar, so a retrofit onto a door that already had hardware doesn't leave you patching and refinishing the face.
11) What happens if the touch sensor on the bar fails or someone can't trigger it?
There's a backup push button built into the TSB, so egress doesn't depend on the touch sensor alone. That backup, plus the fact that the relay is DPST and can be wired to break the lock power directly, is what makes the bar acceptable as the release on a mag-locked opening.
12) How much of the door face does the TSB bar take up?
The bar profile measures 3 inches by 2-3/4 inches in section, running the full 36, 42 or 48 inch length you order. On a narrow-stile aluminum door, check that against the stile face before you commit, since the bar mounts flat to the door and needs continuous bearing along its run.
