Securitron TSB-C – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Securitron TSB-C door cord fit the wire I'm running through it?
The armored stainless steel cable has a .25 inch [6mm] interior diameter and takes interior wire cables up to .2 inch [5mm] thick. So a small multi-conductor bundle for an electric latch retraction device, a strike, or a request-to-exit switch passes fine, but anything thicker than 5mm will not. Measure the jacketed OD of your bundle, not the individual conductors.
2) What's the difference between the TSB-C and the TSB-CXL door cord?
Length, and nothing else. TSB-C is the 18 inch [460mm] cord with caps in gray and black; TSB-CXL is the same cord and caps with a 36 inch [920mm] cable. Pick the 36 inch when the frame junction box sits well away from the hinge edge or you need slack for a wide-swing opening.
3) Do I need to buy a door cord separately if I'm installing a Securitron Touch Sense Bar?
No. The 18 inch cord ships as standard with the Touch Sense Bar and the Touch Sense Handle. Buy the TSB-C on its own when you're replacing a damaged cord, adding power transfer to an opening that has no exit device tie-in, or when you need the 36 inch version instead of the standard 18.
4) Door cord or an electric power transfer hinge-side EPT: which should I use?
A surface door cord like the TSB-C is the simplest and cheapest way to get power from frame to door. It mounts on the surface with plastic end caps, so there's no mortising into the frame or door edge and no removing the door. A concealed electric power transfer, such as the BEST EPT-2, EPT-5, or the 12-conductor EPT-12C, mortises into the hinge edge and hides the wire entirely, which is what you want on a visible lobby door or where a cord would get abused. Pick the cord for speed, retrofit, and back-of-house openings; pick the EPT when appearance or full concealment matters.
5) What is the difference between the Securitron TSB-C door cord and a BEST EPT-2 electric power transfer?
They solve the same problem in two different places on the opening. The TSB-C is a surface door cord: an armored stainless steel cable with plastic end caps in light gray and black that runs from the frame to the door face, in 18 inch and 36 inch lengths, with a 1/4 inch interior diameter that carries interior wire cables up to .2 inch thick. The BEST EPT-2 is an electric power transfer with armored flex conduit carrying 2 conductors, mounted between the frame and the door edge. If you want the wiring concealed in the door edge, the EPT-2 is the form factor; if you want the simplest surface run with no edge prep, the TSB-C is.
6) The spec calls for a concealed power transfer in a stainless housing. Can I substitute the Securitron TSB-C door cord?
No. The TSB-C uses an armored stainless steel cable with plastic end pieces in light gray and black, and it is a surface door cord, so the cable and its caps stay visible on the face of the opening. When the drawing wants a housed transfer, the BEST EPT-5 is the 5 conductor version with a stainless steel housing, and the BEST EPT-2 uses armored flex conduit for a 2 conductor run. Reserve the TSB-C for openings where a visible armored cord is acceptable.
7) How many conductors does the Securitron TSB-C door cord carry?
The TSB-C is sold as an armored raceway with end caps, not as a pre-wired conductor count. You pull your own cable through the .25 inch [6mm] bore, up to .2 inch [5mm] OD. If you'd rather have the conductors supplied and terminated, the BEST EPT line comes as fixed counts, 2-conductor EPT-2, 5-conductor EPT-5, and 12-conductor EPT-12C with quick connect, which is the route to take when you're powering a mortise lock, a monitored strike, and a switch off one opening.
8) Is the Securitron door cord tough enough for a high-traffic commercial opening?
It's built for commercial use, and the flex section is armored stainless steel rather than plain loom, which is what resists the pull and pinch a door cord takes every cycle and makes it hard to cut through. The end pieces are plastic, gray and black. For an opening where the public can reach the cord and vandalism is the concern, a concealed hinge-edge transfer is the better answer.
9) How much clearance do the door cord end caps need on the frame and door?
The mounting caps are compact, 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch, so they sit close to the surface on both the frame and the door face near the hinge edge. Confirm your stop and any surface-mounted closer arm or hinge leaf leave that much room at the point you plan to land the caps.
10) Can I replace a damaged door cord on an existing Securitron Touch Sense opening without changing the exit device?
Yes. The TSB-C cord is sold separately from the Touch Sense Bar and Touch Sense Handle it normally ships with, so a cord that's been crushed by a door closer or cut can be swapped on its own. Match the length you're pulling off: 18 inch is the factory standard, 36 inch if someone specified the longer run.
11) Is the BEST EPT-12C the same part as the Precision EPT-12C?
They are the same 12 conductor quick connect power transfer sold under two labels: the BEST catalog lists it as the Precision Hardware Inc (PHI) EPT-12C, 12 conductor, quick connect, and Precision lists it as a 12 conductor quick connect power transfer in the EPT series. If a submittal calls out either one, the other is the same device under the other brand's cover sheet. Neither is interchangeable with the Securitron TSB-C, which is a door cord with plastic end caps rather than a quick connect transfer.
