1) Will the Select Hinges SL11 continuous geared hinge work on a 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door?
Yes. The SL11 is specified for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the load rating is written around a 1-3/4 inch door up to 48 inches wide in 16 gauge hollow metal (minimum) or 1/8 inch aluminum (minimum). If your door is wider than 48 inches or thinner-skinned than 16 gauge, you are outside what the standard duty version is rated to carry.
2) Is the SL11 continuous hinge fire rated?
Fire rated for 90 minutes as supplied, with a 3-hour rating available as an option at extra cost. It also meets ANSI/BHMA A156.26-2006 Grade 1, which is the continuous hinge standard an institutional spec normally calls out.
3) What length continuous hinge do I order for a 7 foot or 8 foot door?
Standard lengths are 83, 85, 95 and 120 inches, cut to nominal door heights: 83 inches for a 7 foot door and 95 inches for an 8 foot door. Stocked here in 83 and 95 inch, each in black, dark bronze and anodized aluminum. Custom lengths are available when the opening is not nominal.
4) Should I use a continuous geared hinge instead of butt hinges on a high traffic door?
That is exactly what this part is for. A geared continuous hinge carries the door load along the full height of the opening rather than at three or four points, so it does not sag or wear the frame the way butt hinges do on abusive, high traffic openings. The SL11 is the flush mounted concealed version, meaning it is hidden when the door is closed rather than sitting proud on the face of the frame. On self-lubricating polyester thrust bearings, so no field lubrication.
5) What screws come with the Select Hinges SL11 and do I need to drill and tap the frame?
It ships with 12-24 x 3/4 inch self drilling, thread forming 410 stainless Phillips undercut flathead screws, so no pre-drilling or tapping is needed in 16 gauge hollow metal or 1/8 inch aluminum. Rivnuts only come into play on the heavier duty versions of the hinge, not on standard duty.
6) Do I have to specify handing when ordering a Select Hinges SL11 continuous hinge?
No. A continuous geared hinge runs the full height of the door edge and is symmetrical, so one part number covers left and right hand openings. What you do have to nail down is length (83 or 95 inch standard here, custom lengths available), finish, and that your door falls inside 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch thick and 48 inches wide at 200 lb or less.
7) Will the SL11 hinge rust or corrode on an exterior door?
The hinge body is extruded 6063 T6 aluminum alloy, which does not rust, and the supplied fasteners are 410 stainless. Finishes offered are clear anodized aluminum, dark bronze and black, both in the 83 and 95 inch lengths.
