Select Hinges SL11-83-CL-HD – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Select Hinges SL11 heavy duty continuous hinge work on a 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door?
Yes. The SL11 is specified for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the load ratings are written around a 1-3/4 inch door up to 48 inches wide in 16 gauge hollow metal minimum, or 1/8 inch aluminum minimum. If your door is thinner sheet metal than 16 gauge or a lighter aluminum extrusion than 1/8 inch, the rated capacity does not apply even though the hinge will physically mount.
2) Is the Select Hinges SL11 fire rated?
Fire rated for 90 minutes as standard. A 3-hour rating is available as an option at extra cost, so if your opening is a 3-hour rated stair or shaft wall you have to specify that version rather than assume the standard hinge covers it.
3) Does the SL11 meet ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 for a spec-driven institutional job?
The SL11 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.26-2006 Grade 1, which is the continuous hinge standard. That plus the 90 minute fire rating is normally what a school, hospital or government spec is looking for on a geared continuous hinge line item.
4) I have a lead lined X-ray room door. Will the SL11 heavy duty hinge hold it?
Not the standard heavy duty version. For low-frequency doors up to 1,000 lb, including most lead-lined doors, Select Hinges makes the Heavy Duty LL, which is the same HD hinge with additional fastener holes. Rivnuts are recommended in the frame and door on those openings. Ordering the plain HD for a lead-lined door under-specifies the opening.
5) What screws come with the Select Hinges SL11 and do I have to drill the frame first?
It ships with 12-24 x 3/4 inch self drilling, thread forming 410 stainless Phillips undercut flathead screws, so the fasteners cut their own threads in hollow metal and aluminum without pre-tapping. Rivnuts are a separate item and are only in play on the heavier applications: required for 600 lb low-frequency doors, and recommended in frame and door on extremely tall, heavy or wide openings.
6) Should I use a geared continuous hinge or standard butt hinges on a high traffic entrance?
Butt hinges concentrate the door's weight at two or three points, which is where hollow metal frames tear out and doors start to sag on a busy opening. A geared continuous hinge like the SL11 runs the full height of the door and spreads that load along the entire edge, which is why it is built for abuse from high traffic applications and why it carries 200 lb doors at high frequency with no frame or door reinforcement. On a lobby, stairwell or corridor door that cycles hundreds of times a day, that is the difference between a hinge line that holds alignment and one you keep going back to adjust.
7) Will the SL11 hinge show from the corridor side when the door is closed?
No. The SL11 is a flush mounted concealed continuous hinge, so it sits within the door and frame edge rather than wrapping the face of the door like a full surface hinge. With the door shut you see the door edge gap, not a hinge leaf. That is what makes it the choice on openings where the finish matters, and it is offered in Black, Dark Bronze and Anodized Aluminum to work with the frame.
8) Does a Select Hinges SL11 continuous hinge need lubrication or maintenance?
No greasing. The SL11 runs on self-lubricating polyester thrust bearings between the geared leaves, so there is nothing to oil on a maintenance schedule. The body is extruded 6063 T6 aluminum alloy, which does not rust the way a plated steel butt hinge does on an exterior or wash-down opening.
9) Do I need to specify handing when ordering the SL11 continuous geared hinge?
Length and finish are the two choices that matter on the SL11: 83, 85, 95 or 120 inch standard, or a custom length, in Black, Dark Bronze or Anodized Aluminum. What you do have to get right instead is the duty level against your door weight and cycle rate, and whether the opening needs the optional 3-hour fire rating rather than the standard 90 minute.
