1) Can the TIPIT anti-ligature tip be added to hinges that are already installed, or is it new construction only?
Both. The TIPIT ligature-resistant hospital tip is made for new construction and for retrofitting hinges already hanging in the opening, so a behavioral health unit or a correctional facility can bring existing doors up to standard without pulling the geared continuous hinge out of the frame. It fastens to the frame header above the hinge, which is why the existing hinge and frame stay in place.
2) Will the TIPIT tip fit my geared continuous hinge, or only certain models?
TIPIT attaches to the frame header above most models of concealed or full-surface geared continuous hinges, and it is ordered to match: one version for concealed mount hinges, one for surface mount hinges. Identify which type is in your opening before you order, because the two are not interchangeable. If your door swings on butt hinges rather than a continuous geared hinge, this is not the part for that opening.
3) What does an anti-ligature hinge tip actually do on a psychiatric or correctional door?
It closes off the gap at the top of the hinge. The TIPIT is a patented tip that prevents objects from being attached to the top of the hinge, removing the anchor point a ligature would need. Doors are one of the standard ligature risk points a behavioral health or correctional facility has to address, and this handles the hinge line specifically, not the door top or the closer.
4) Do I have to replace the whole continuous hinge to get an anti-ligature top on my doors?
No. Replacing geared continuous hinges across a wing is expensive and takes the doors out of service. The TIPIT mounts to the frame header above the existing hinge and saves the existing hinges and door frames, so an occupied hospital or school can be brought up to spec opening by opening rather than as a hardware replacement project.
5) Do I need to buy screws or a mounting kit with the TIPIT hinge tip?
No extra hardware to source. Each TIPIT ships with a #10 Torx stainless steel security screw, so the fastener that anchors it to the frame header is included. You will need a #10 security Torx bit to drive it, which is the point of the pin drive on a ligature-resistant application: it should not come off with a common screwdriver.
6) Should I get the aluminum TIPIT or the polymer one?
The TIPIT comes as grey metal or black polymer, and the choice is mostly durability versus appearance. The metal version is aluminum and takes harder abuse, which suits correctional and high-traffic institutional openings. The polymer is a high-tech polymer offered in black or gray and blends into a darker frame. Both do the same job at the top of the hinge. Facilities standardizing across a building usually pick one and stay with it so the openings match.
7) How many combinations does the SELECT TIPIT come in and what do I have to specify when ordering?
Four. Two things get specified: hinge type, either concealed mount or surface mount, and finish, either black polymer or grey metal. Every pairing of those two is orderable. Get the hinge type right first, since finish is cosmetic and mount type is fit.
