1) What thread sizes does the Thomas & Betts BEM EMC cable gland come in, and is the thread NPT or metric?
The BEM EMC gland is NPT threaded, not metric. Four sizes are offered: 1 inch (BEM-1001), 1-1/4 inch (BEM-1251), 1-1/2 inch (BEM-1501) and 2 inch (BEM-2001). If your enclosure hub or conduit body is tapped metric, this is the wrong gland for that opening.
2) Is the BEM gland rated for washdown or outdoor use?
It carries an IP68 degree of protection and a NEMA 4 rating, so it is suited to hose-directed water and dust-tight wet locations. Operating range is -20 to +100 degrees C.
3) Do I need an exact cable OD match to use a BEM gland?
No. The BEM glands have a wide cable clamping range, so one size covers a span of cable diameters rather than a single OD. Pick the NPT size that matches your enclosure hub (1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 or 2 inch) and confirm your cable OD falls in that size's clamping range on the matching spec sheet, BEM-1001 through BEM-2001.
4) Is the Thomas & Betts BEM gland UL listed?
Yes, it is cULus recognized, and also carries RoHS, WEEE and LVD compliance. That covers both US and Canadian jobs for inspectors who want a listed fitting on the enclosure.
5) What is the BEM gland made of, and will it corrode in a coastal or chemical plant environment?
The body is brass with a nickel-plated surface finish, which gives good corrosion resistance. Appearance is metallic rather than painted. For a plastic-bodied gland you would be looking at a different product entirely, as this one is all metal.
6) Is the BEM a straight gland or a 90 degree elbow fitting?
Straight body. It threads directly into the hub with no change of direction, and it is a low profile compact design, which matters when panel space behind a cabinet is tight. If the cable needs to turn at the wall, you want an angled gland instead.
7) Can I standardize on BEM glands across a facility with mixed shielded and unshielded runs?
You can, but you would be paying for shield termination you don't need on the unshielded runs. The BEM is specifically an EMC/shielded-cable gland with radial shield contact. For plain unshielded cable in the same enclosures, a standard liquidtight cord grip in the same NPT size does the sealing job without the EMC hardware.
