Trimco 1001-9 Heavy Duty Push Plate (6" x 16")

The 1001-9 is the 6 x 16 inch plate. Trimco's 1001 Series standard sizes are 3 x 12, 3-1/2 x 15, 4 x 16, 6 x 16 and 8 x 16 inches, and custom sizes are made as well. The 6 x 16 is the common choice on a full commercial door where you want a wide push target; on a narrow stile aluminum door the 3 x 12 or 3-1/2 x 15 is usually the one that fits the stile.

A push plate is a flat protective plate, not a handle. It goes on the push side of a door that swings away from the user, protects the face from hand and cart contact, and gives a clean ADA-friendly push target with nothing to grab. If people have to pull the door open, you need a pull instead, like the Ives 8103HD heavy duty straight pull or the ABH AB3300 straight flat end pull. The usual commercial pairing is a pull on one face and a 1001 push plate on the other.

The Trimco 1001-9 is ADA compliant as a push plate, which is straightforward - a flat plate needs no grasping, pinching or twisting to operate. The pull side is where the specification gets decided. The Ives 8145EZHD is a 45 degree offset door pull with heavy duty mounting hardware and is ADA compliant. Among the other heavy duty offsets, the Ives 8169 is a C style offset solid door pull, 1" diameter, with heavy duty mounting, and the Ives 8102HD straight pull uses a 3/4" round bar with 1-1/2" clearance behind it. Clearance behind the bar is the dimension to confirm against your facility's accessibility requirement.

The 1001 is .050 inch thick material, in stainless steel, brass, bronze or aluminum, with a 1/8 inch plastic version available. That .050 gauge is the heavy-duty range for a push plate rather than the thin residential stock, which is why it gets specified in schools and public corridors. All four edges are pencil beveled so there is no sharp edge at the plate perimeter.

Oval head screws come with the plate as standard, so no separate fastener order is needed for a normal wood or hollow metal door application. Trimco also publishes a 1001 Series template, which is what you use to lay out the hole pattern before drilling.

Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 626 satin chrome, 628 satin aluminum, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel, and 710CU Healthy Hardware Steralloy silver. For matching, go by the BHMA number on the hardware you already have, not by the name: satin chrome levers are 626, brushed stainless door hardware is 630, and polished stainless is 629. Every one of the ten is available with or without the cylinder cut.

710CU Steralloy silver is Trimco's Healthy Hardware finish, and the 1001 plate is flagged as a Healthy Hardware item in that finish. A push plate is the single most touched surface on a door, which is why the copper-alloy finish gets specified on healthcare, school and public corridor openings rather than on a back-of-house door. It is one of the ten finishes offered, and it can be had cut for cylinder or plain.

A back-to-back set puts a graspable handle on both faces of the door rather than a flat plate on the push side. The Deltana OHP620 is an offset handle pull supplied as a back-to-back set, and it lists a door thickness range of 1-1/8" to 1-3/8", so it is sized to lighter doors; the Deltana SSPOBB24 is a 24" back-to-back modern offset pull and the SSPORBB24 is the 24" back-to-back round offset version. The tradeoff is what the push side looks like and takes: the Trimco 1001-9 gives a 6" x 16" .050" plate that shields the door face from hand contact and shoe scuffs on schools, public buildings, commercial and industrial buildings, government and military facilities, and multifamily openings, where a back-to-back set leaves the door face exposed between the mounting points. Check the door thickness before specifying the OHP620 on a commercial door.

The Trimco 1001-9 push plate is available in 710CU Healthy Hardware Steralloy Silver, and Trimco flags the 1001 Series as Healthy Hardware, so the push side of the opening can be specified in that finish across a facility. The comparable commercial pulls are specified differently: the ABH AB7200 is a solid stainless steel flat end pull with through-bolt mounting, and the Cal-Royal PUL-175 night latch cylinder pull is stainless steel construction. If antimicrobial coating on the touched surface is the driver of the specification, the plate carries it and the pull selection needs to be confirmed separately for finish.

3 inches is the center-to-center dimension published for the 1001 plate, which is the hole spacing you lay out when drilling the door. Use the Trimco 1001 Series template to transfer it rather than measuring off the plate, and confirm the pattern misses any existing lock or cylinder prep in the door face before you drill.
