Trimco 1254 Wall Stop & Holder

The 1254 has a 2-1/8 inch projection, so the door face stops that distance from the wall. Measure from the finished wall surface (allowing for base or chair rail) to where the door edge or knob would otherwise strike, and confirm 2-1/8 inches keeps the hardware clear. If your door swings wider than that gap, you need a floor stop or an overhead stop instead of a wall-mounted unit.

That is the case it is built for. The 1254 is cast solid brass or bronze with a 4-point fastening system, which spreads the load across four anchors instead of one or two, so a door slammed into it repeatedly is less likely to pull the stop out of the wall. It is a commercial-duty unit, applied to multifamily and mixed-use buildings and high-abuse locations like schools and public buildings.

It does both. The 1254 is a combination stop and holder, so it arrests the door at 2-1/8 inches off the wall and will also catch and hold the door in the open position. That is the difference between it and a plain wall bumper, which only cushions the strike and lets the door swing back. Use the holder function where you want a corridor or unit door propped during move-ins or deliveries.

The 1254 uses a 4-point fastening system, which means four anchor points into the wall rather than a single center screw. On a hollow drywall wall you still want solid backing behind it: a stud, in-wall blocking, or heavy-duty toggle anchors at all four points. The stop is cast solid brass or bronze and is meant for high-abuse openings, so the wall attachment, not the casting, is what usually fails. Trimco publishes a mounting template (1254_Template_T11545) for laying out the four holes.

Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, and 626 satin chrome. Those are BHMA finish numbers, so match the code stamped on or specified for your existing levers and hinges rather than matching by eye. 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze are the two you will most often be matching in multifamily corridors.

Pick by where the door lands. A wall stop works when there is wall directly behind the swing within reach of its 2-1/8 inch projection, and it keeps the floor clear, which is why the 1254 is ADA compliant. A floor stop is the answer when the door swings into open space, past a return wall, or the wall behind it is glass or millwork you cannot anchor into. The tradeoff is that floor stops sit in the traffic path and get kicked. For high-traffic multifamily and institutional corridors where you can anchor into the wall, the 1254 with its 4-point fastening is the more abuse-tolerant of the two.

Do not count on it. The 1254 anchors at four points, and most stops being replaced are single-post units with one center hole, so the existing hole will not serve. Lay the new unit out from Trimco's template (1254_Template_T11545) and patch the old hole. The upside is that four fresh anchors in sound wall or blocking is a stronger repair than reusing a hole that already worked loose once.

Cast solid brass or bronze, not stamped or plated steel. For a property manager that matters two ways: a cast body does not dent when a cart hits it, and the finish is on solid material so wear shows as patina rather than exposing a different metal underneath. It is the reason the same stop can carry a bright brass and an oil rubbed bronze version that both age predictably.
