Trimco TRI-1278CX.626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Trimco 1278CX wall bumper work with a lever handle that hits the wall?
That is what the 1278CX is for. It is a metal-encased rubber wall stop that takes the impact of the lockset or lever instead of letting it punch the drywall, and Trimco builds the series to suit all styles of locksets and handles. The CX suffix is the convex bumper, so the rubber face crowns outward to meet a lever or knob squarely. Cast construction on this model.
2) Convex or concave wall bumper, which one do I need?
Convex, like the 1278CX, has the rubber crowned outward and is the general-purpose choice when a knob or lever face strikes the bumper. Concave (the CV models in the same Trimco family) is dished, so it cups a round knob and keeps it from sliding off the edge of the stop. Trimco offers both bumper profiles across the wall stop range; pick concave if you are catching a ball or round knob, convex for lever trim and most everything else.
3) Can tenants or students unscrew the rubber off a Trimco wall bumper?
Not easily. Trimco casts a heavy steel washer into the rubber bumper specifically to resist tampering and unauthorized removal, so there is no soft rubber to grab and twist off the wall. For higher-abuse openings the series also runs a surface-mounted school version (SV) and a prison version (PV) with an anti-rotation pin that stops the unit being turned off the wall entirely. If you are hardware in a detention corridor, order the PV rather than the standard 1278CX.
4) Is the Trimco 1278CX rated for commercial use, and does it carry a BHMA number?
Commercial grade, and it carries BHMA L02101/L0225 under the ANSI/BHMA numbering for wall stops. That is the reference a spec writer or an institutional buyer needs to match the stop to a hardware schedule.
5) Do I have to buy anchors separately for a Trimco 1278 wall bumper?
No. Every unit ships with a combination fastener pack covering the range of wall conditions you run into, drywall, block, stud, so a crew doing a floor of units does not need to stage separate anchors per wall type. That is the only mounting hardware the job needs.
6) What finishes does the Trimco 1278CX wall bumper come in?
Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. If you are matching existing door hardware across a building, 626 satin chrome and 613 oil rubbed bronze are the two that pair with the most common lever finishes on the same opening.
7) Cast or wrought wall stop, what is the difference and which should I order?
The 1278CX is the cast version. Cast bodies are the heavier of the two constructions Trimco offers in this range and are what gets specified where the stop takes repeated hits, corridors, classrooms, detention. Wrought is the lighter-formed option in the same family. Both accept the same rubber bumper profiles and both come in most architectural finishes, so the decision is about abuse level on the opening, not appearance.
8) Can I use a Trimco 1278CX wall stop instead of a floor stop in an apartment or hotel corridor?
Yes, where the wall behind the door is solid and within reach of the swing. A wall bumper keeps the floor clear, which is why it gets used in hospitality, multifamily and office corridors instead of a floor stop that becomes a trip hazard and a mop obstruction. Where the door swings past the wall or into open space, a wall bumper has nothing to land on and you need a floor stop or an overhead stop instead.
9) I have Trimco 1270 series stops on the other doors, will the 1278CX match?
They are the same family of metal-encased rubber wall stops from Trimco and share the finish range, so a 1278CX in 626 satin chrome reads the same as the rest of your 626 hardware. The 1278 is the decor style within the range, so its face profile is not identical to the plain 1270 units. If the requirement is visual uniformity across a floor, order the same model number you already have rather than mixing styles.
10) Is a wall bumper enough to stop a door, or do I also need a holder?
A bumper only stops the door, it does not hold it open. The 1278CX cushions the swing and protects the wall from the lever, nothing more. If the opening needs the door parked open, for a moving crew, a loading corridor, a classroom on a warm day, you need a separate hold-open device or a stop-and-holder unit on top of this.
