Trimco’s KE Series Edge & Finger Guards are manufactured in the USA by master craftsmen from stainless steel, bronze or brass. Flexibility in options on the Edge Guards includes beveled or non-beveled stile, single or double acting doors, mortising, 2 or 3 edge protection and custom cutouts. 1) Will a Trimco KE31-1 edge guard fit a door with a beveled stile?
No. The KE31-1 is the 90 degree, 2-sided edge guard made for a non-beveled stile on a single acting door. If your door stile is beveled 1/8 inch, you need the KE32-1, which is the same 2-sided guard bent to 93 degrees to sit flat on that bevel. Putting a 90 degree guard on a beveled stile leaves the leg standing off the face of the door.
2) What is the difference between a 2-sided and a 3-sided edge guard, and which do I need?
Two-sided wraps the door edge and one face, which is what a single acting door needs since it only swings one way and only takes abuse on the push side. Three-sided wraps the edge and both faces, which is what a double acting door needs because it swings both directions. In the KE Series, the KE31-1 is the 2-sided 90 degree guard for single acting doors and the KE33-1 is the 3-sided 90 degree version for double acting doors.
3) Do I have to specify mortise or non-mortise when ordering the Trimco KE31-1?
Yes, that call gets made at order time. The KE31-1 is the surface-applied (non-mortised) 90 degree 2-sided guard. If you want the guard let into the door edge so it sits flush, that is the KE35-1, the mortised 90 degree 2-sided version for a non-beveled stile on a single acting door. Mortising means routing the edge, so it is a shop or new-door decision more often than a retrofit one.
4) Is the Trimco KE31-1 edge guard suitable for a hospital or school door that keeps getting chewed up by carts?
That is exactly the job. 5) I need to keep kids' fingers out of the hinge gap, not protect the door edge. Is the KE31-1 the right part?
No. The KE31-1 protects the door edge from impact damage. For pinch protection at the hinge side, the KE Series part is the KE39 finger guard, which covers the gap between the door and the jamb so fingers cannot get caught. Nurseries and pre-schools typically need both: the finger guard at the hinge and an edge guard on the strike edge.
6) My door has a rounded (radius) stile on a double acting door. Does any KE Series guard fit that?
Not the KE31-1, which is a hard 90 degree bend for a square, non-beveled stile. For a radius stile on a double acting door, Trimco makes the KE34-1, a 3-sided guard shaped to the radius, or the KE38-1 if you want it mortised into the edge.
