Trine 478-32D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Trine 478 faceplate work with my existing 3000 Series electric strike mechanism?
The 478 faceplate mates with any 3000 Series mechanism: the 3012, 3024, 30LC, and 30RS. Trine builds the 3000 Series as a modular system, so the faceplate and the mechanism are ordered separately and any of the nine 3000 Series faceplates goes on any of those four mechanisms. That means you can stock one mechanism and change only the faceplate when the frame prep changes.
2) Does the Trine 478 fit an ANSI 4-7/8 inch pre-prepped frame?
Yes. The 478 measures 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches, which is the ANSI 4-7/8 strike prep size, so on a frame already prepped to ANSI it cuts roughly 60 percent less of the frame face than a full electric strike cutout. Trine notes a slight frame modification to ANSI A115.1 is still involved, so plan on some file work at the cavity rather than a pure drop-in.
3) Can I use the Trine 478 faceplate with a mortise lock or a panic device?
No. The 478 is set up for cylindrical locksets only, with latch throw up to 5/8 inch based on a 1/8 inch door gap. A mortise lock or a rim exit device has a deeper latch and a different keeper geometry, so you need a 3000 Series faceplate cut for that lock type instead. Check the latch throw on the lockset you already have before you commit to this one.
4) What are the mortise cavity dimensions I need to cut for the Trine 478 faceplate?
Cut for a 1 inch mortise backset, with a cavity 1/2 inch deep, 5/8 inch wide, and 1-1/8 inch high. Those are the numbers to lay out in the frame before the faceplate and mechanism go in, and they are the same regardless of which finish you order.
5) Is the Trine 478 a complete electric strike, or do I need to order more to make the door work?
The 478 is the faceplate only. To have a working electric strike you also need one of the 3000 Series mechanisms (3012, 3024, 30LC or 30RS), which is where the voltage and the fail-safe or fail-secure behavior comes from. Ordering the faceplate on its own is what you do when you are changing frame prep or finish on a strike you already have in the door.
6) Will a Trine 478 install in an aluminum storefront frame, or only hollow metal?
Wood, hollow metal, and aluminum frames all take the 478, for new construction or a replacement into an existing opening. It is a commercial-installation part, and the centered keeper configuration means the strike sits on the frame centerline rather than offset to one edge.
7) My latch is not lining up with the strike opening. Does the Trine 478 have any adjustment?
There is 1/8 inch of horizontal adjustment built into the 478 faceplate, which is enough to pick up a latch that sits slightly off from where the frame was prepped. Beyond 1/8 inch of misalignment you are into re-cutting the frame or shimming the frame itself.
8) Does the Trine 478 meet Buy American Act requirements for a government job?
Made in the USA and meets the Buy American Act, which is the answer a federal, state, or institutional spec usually needs on an access-control submittal for the 3000 Series faceplate.
9) What finishes does the Trine 478 electric strike faceplate come in?
Five: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 629 bright stainless steel, 630 satin stainless steel, and dark bronze powder coat. For matching a run of openings, 630 satin stainless is the one that reads closest to the US26D satin chrome and 630 lever trim on most commercial doors, and unlike some strikes the 478 has no black plastic ramp on the face to break up the finish.
10) Is the Trine 478 rated for high-traffic doors or standard duty?
Standard duty is what the 478 is classified as. That suits offices, tenant entries, and interior controlled-access doors. For a main entrance taking constant public traffic or an opening that gets abused, look at a heavy duty strike line rather than the 3000 Series.
