1) Will the Trine EN850 electric strike work with a rim panic exit device?
That's exactly what the EN850 is built for. It's a rim panic solution strike that accepts the pullman latch of most rim panic exit devices, with a keeper throw up to 1 inch, and it goes into wood or metal jambs on new or replacement work. The faceplate is 9 inches, so the jamb needs to take a strike cutout of that length.
2) Can an electric strike be used outdoors on a gate?
The Trine EN850 is one of the few rated for it. It carries a UL 1034 Indoor/Outdoor Burglary Resistant listing, which is why it gets specified on exterior gates and perimeter openings where a standard interior strike would fail. If you need a version that mounts in a gatebox anywhere on the gate frame, Trine's EN400RP is the model to look at instead. 3) Do I have to order the Trine EN850 handed, and can I change it in the field?
Handing is an order choice, left hand or right hand, but it isn't a permanent commitment. The EN850 is field reversible for handing, so a strike that arrives the wrong hand for the opening can be flipped on site rather than returned.
4) Should I order the Trine EN850 fail safe or fail secure?
Order to how the opening has to behave in a power loss: fail secure keeps the door locked when power drops (the usual choice for exterior and perimeter gates), fail safe releases it. Both are offered. On DC units the mode is field reversible, so a 12VDC or 24VDC strike can be switched on site. That reversibility is tied to the DC units, so if you're specifying 12VAC or 24VAC, pick the mode you actually want at the time of order.
5) Which voltage should I pick for the Trine EN850, and will it buzz?
Four voltages are offered: 12VAC, 24VAC, 12VDC and 24VDC. The AC units buzz when energized and are rated intermittent duty only. The DC units run silent and are rated intermittent or continuous duty, drawing 0.280A at 12VDC (43 ohms) and 0.150A at 24VDC (164 ohms). For anything near an occupied space, or where the strike may sit energized, go DC. AC draw is higher: 0.700A at 12VAC and 0.370A at 24VAC.
6) I need an electric strike for a cylindrical or mortise lock, not a panic bar. Is the EN850 right?
No. The EN850 is a rim panic strike, sized for the pullman latch of a rim exit device, not for a cylindrical latchbolt or mortise lock. For a cylindrical lockset, the Von Duprin 4211 (Grade 1, 12/24VDC field-selectable, fire rated) or the Adams Rite 7240 with 5/8 inch latchbolt projection are the right shape. For a mortise lock, look at the Von Duprin 6210 or the Securitron MUNL. The Von Duprin 6400 handles either.
7) The opening is a labeled fire door with a rim exit device. What electric strike works there instead of the Trine EN850?
The Trine EN850 states in its own specifications that it is not fire rated, so a labeled opening needs a different strike. The Hager 2945 is a fire rated rim exit strike with field selectable fail safe/fail secure operation and a latchbolt monitor, which keeps the rim exit device application and adds the fire rating. The Camden CX-ED1410 and CX-ED1420 universal Grade 1 ANSI strikes are also fire rated. Note that the Hager 2945 and the EN850 share the field reversible fail safe/fail secure behavior, so the wiring decision on site is the same.
8) Is the Adams Rite 7100 a substitute for the Trine EN850 electric strike?
They solve different openings. The Adams Rite 7100 is an electric strike for aluminum jambs with a flat 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate, sized for narrow stile aluminum framing. The Trine EN850 carries a 9 inch faceplate and is intended for wood or metal jambs with rim panic exit devices. An aluminum storefront jamb prepped for the Adams Rite 7100 will not take a 9 inch faceplate without new prep, and neither product is fire rated. For hollow metal and wood jambs in the same Adams Rite family, the 7170 uses the same 1-1/4 inch by 4-7/8 inch faceplate.
9) What is a comparable outdoor rated electric strike to the Trine EN850 for a gate application?
The Camden CX-ED1959 series is an outdoor rated electric gate strike, which puts it in the same application space as the Trine EN850, an outdoor rated electric strike built for rim panic exit devices in wood or metal jambs. The difference to check before ordering either one is fire rating: the Camden CX-ED1959 is not fire rated, and the EN850 is likewise stated in its own specifications as not fire rated, so neither belongs in a labeled fire door opening. For an exterior gate or a perimeter door where no fire label applies, both are outdoor rated candidates.

No. The Trine EN850 is made to work with most rim panic exit devices. For surface vertical rod devices, the HES Folger Adam 310-4-2 is a complete electric strike pac built for surface vertical rods, and it is a Grade 1 unit that is not fire rated.
