WAC Lighting WAC-PL-LED24 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the WAC Hemmingway PL-LED24 picture light hardwired or does it plug in?
The PL-LED24 Hemmingway is the hardwired version, so it needs a junction box behind the backplate. WAC does build Hemmingway in a portable version as well, and those ship with an 8 foot cord and plug plus an 18 inch wire cover in the matching finish. If you are retrofitting over existing artwork with no box in the wall, the portable is the one to order.
2) How far does the Hemmingway picture light stick out from the wall, and can I aim it?
The head extends 14-1/2 inches out from the mounting surface and rotates 90 degrees up or down, so you can pitch the beam down onto a canvas or up onto a tapestry. The fixture body itself is 10.13 inches wide and 5.13 inches high, with a 4.5 inch backplate covering the outlet box.
3) What dimmer works with the WAC PL-LED24 picture light?
Use an electronic low voltage (ELV) dimmer. The integrated LED driver in the PL-LED24 is ELV dimmable and gives smooth continuous dimming on that type. A standard incandescent or MLV dimmer is the usual cause of flicker or drop-out on these, so spec the ELV device on the wall box when you order.
4) Can the Hemmingway picture light go in a bathroom or a covered porch?
Damp location rated and IP44, so it is fine for interior use or an exterior covered spot such as a porch ceiling overhang or a protected entry, and fine for a powder room. It is not rated for wet locations with direct rain or spray exposure.
5) Does the WAC PL-LED24 meet California Title 24 for a hotel or multifamily project?
Yes on both California energy requirements: it is Title 24 compliant and Title 20 listed. Safety listings are ETL and cETL, which covers US and Canadian jobs. Note it is not Energy Star listed and not ADA compliant, and the ADA point matters here because the head projects 14-1/2 inches from the wall, well past what a corridor or path of travel allows above 27 inches.
6) Do I need to buy bulbs for the Hemmingway PL-LED24?
No lamping to order. It is an integrated LED, one light source, supplied in the fixture and rated 70,000 hours average life. Nothing is field replaceable, which is the tradeoff: at end of life the fixture is replaced rather than relamped. For a property manager stocking spares, that means no lamp SKU to carry.
7) How much light does the WAC Hemmingway 24 put out and what color is it?
1186 lumens at 16.9 watts on 120V, in a warm 2700K. The beam is a flood spread through a frosted glass diffuser lens, so it washes a wide canvas rather than spotting one point. 2700K is the warm gallery tone that keeps oils and wood frames looking natural.
8) Will this LED picture light fade my artwork?
The Hemmingway LED head produces no infrared or ultraviolet output, which is what fades pigment and dries out canvas under traditional incandescent or halogen picture lights. WAC calls the approach Chronophoton Technology. That, plus the warm 2700K full spectrum output, is why it gets specified over older halogen picture lights for original work.
9) What finishes does the 10.13 inch Hemmingway picture light come in, and can I match other openings?
Three finishes are built in the hardwired 10.13 inch size: Burnished Brass (PL-LED24-27-BB), Polished Nickel (PL-LED24-27-PN), and Rubbed Bronze (PL-LED24-27-RB). All three are 2700K. The housing is aluminum with a glass shade, so the finish is on metal rather than plated plastic. Hemmingway is also built in a second, smaller size if you are lighting mixed frame widths in the same room and want the look to carry.
10) How is the Hemmingway PL-LED24 mounted, over the frame or on the wall?
It is a wall mount fixture on a 4.5 inch backplate, landing on a standard outlet box in the wall above the art rather than clipping to the frame. Because the head swivels up or down, it can be mounted above the picture and aimed down, or below and aimed up.
