WAC Lighting Step and Wall Lights are designed to seamlessly blend into any architecture featuring a sleek interchangeable magnetic faceplate with no visible hardware. 1) Can this louvered LED step light be used outdoors and in wet areas?
Yes. The WL-LED220 is wet location rated with an IP66 sealed light engine, so it works on exterior stair risers, retaining walls and walkways as well as indoors. Two cautions from the finish side: brushed nickel is interior only, and for coastal or salt air exposure WAC recommends the marine grade stainless steel version instead of a painted aluminum one.
2) Will this step light dim, and what kind of dimmer do I need?
It dims smoothly from 100 percent down to 10 percent, but only on an ELV (electronic low voltage) dimmer. A standard incandescent/forward-phase TRIAC dimmer is not the right control for it. Spec the ELV dimmer on the circuit before the electrician trims out, because the fixture has no onboard driver to swap later.
3) How big is the WAC 3 inch louvered step light and how far does it stand off the wall?
Fixture measures 3 inches wide by 5 inches long by 1.75 inches high, with a 3 inch backplate length. It is a low profile, flush to wall design with no visible hardware, so in a stairwell or corridor it stays clear of shoulder traffic and keeps the wall line clean.
4) Does this WAC step light meet California Title 24?
Yes, the 120V version is CEC listed and Title 24 compliant, which is what a California project inspector will be looking for on residential and non-residential exterior lighting. It is also ETL and cETL listed for US and Canadian installations. It is not Energy Star rated.
5) How do you service this step light if the LED fails, and do I have to pull the fixture?
The faceplate is magnetic and comes off without tools or visible fasteners, and the LED module behind it is replaceable. Module options include blue, red and amber, so a property manager can change the look of an installed run without rewiring. Rated life is 50,000 hours at 3.5W, with the lamp included from the factory.
6) Is a louvered step light the right choice, or should I use a non-shielded faceplate?
Go louvered when the fixture sits in someone's sight line, stair flights, seating areas, corridor walls, since the vertical louver blades shield the source and push light down with little or no glare. If you need broader wash across a wide tread or a walkway surface, an unshielded or horizontal-louver faceplate throws wider. WAC's faceplates are interchangeable and magnetic, so the decision is about the look and the glare control, not about the rough-in.
7) Is this step light ADA compliant for a commercial stairwell?
Yes, it is listed ADA compliant, and the flush to wall, low profile body at 1.75 inches high is what keeps it inside the protruding objects limit in a corridor or stair run. Mounting is wall or any orientation, hardwired.
8) What finishes does the WAC WL-LED220 come in for exterior use?
Painted die cast aluminum in black, bronze and white, each offered in both amber and 3000K. Black and bronze disappear against stone and dark siding; white suits painted stucco and interior corridors. The housing is corrosion resistant die cast aluminum alloy. For salt air, the marine grade stainless steel body is the recommended build instead.
