120V step and wall lights by WAC Lighting are offered in a variety of styles and can be installed onto a standard 2in x 4in electrical junction box. 1) Can this WAC step light be used outdoors on an exposed stair or deck?
Yes. The WL-LED101 is factory sealed and water tight with an IP66 rating against high-pressure water jets, and it carries a Wet location rating with UL and cUL listing. It is rated for indoor or outdoor use, so the same part can run interior corridors and exterior steps on one job.
2) Is this a low voltage landscape fixture or does it wire to line voltage?
It runs on 120V line voltage and is hardwired, so no transformer is needed. That is the practical difference from WAC's low voltage landscape steplights, which have to be fed from a landscape transformer. Wire it straight into the 120V branch circuit at the junction box.
3) Which color temperature should I order for a beachfront property with sea turtle lighting rules?
Order the amber version, WL-LED101-AM-WT. WAC states the amber color temperature is turtle friendly, and the fixture is also Dark Sky compliant, which is what coastal and municipal night-sky ordinances usually look for. The other two choices are 2700K and 3000K white, which are not the ones to use where turtle lighting restrictions apply.
4) Will this hold up in a coastal or marine environment?
The standard housing is cast k-alloy aluminum, engineered for harsh environments, and it is what you would use on most inland jobs. For salt air, WAC offers stainless steel (-SS) and solid brass coated in bronze (-BBR) versions of the 120V step lights specifically for corrosive coastal and marine exposure. If the building is on the water, specify one of those rather than the aluminum body.
5) Is there a version of this WAC step light that turns itself on at dusk?
Yes, but it is a different model. The WL-LED101 has no sensor built in. WAC offers a daylight photocell option that switches the steplight on at dusk and off at dawn automatically under WL-LED102 and WL-LED202. Order one of those if you do not want the fixtures on a timeclock or contactor.
6) What color temperatures and finish does the WL-LED101 come in?
Three orderable combinations, all in white finish: 2700K (WL-LED101-27-WT), 3000K (WL-LED101-30-WT), and amber (WL-LED101-AM-WT). Every one ships with interchangeable clear, amber, red and blue lenses, so you can change the lens color on site without changing the part you ordered. The standard glass is a frosted lens.
7) How big is this step light and how far does it stick out of the wall?
The fixture measures 5 in wide by 3 in high with a 1.5 in dimension on the remaining axis, and the backplate height is 3.13 in. It is a horizontal format, so it reads wide and low on a riser or stair wall. Check the 5 in width against your tile or stone coursing before you set the box.
8) Does the light have to be oriented one specific way when I install it?
No. The WL-LED101 has reversible mounting, so you can flip it to aim the output where you need it. That matters on stair risers where you want the wash down onto the tread rather than up the wall.
9) Does this step light meet California Title 24 and ADA requirements?
Both are listed for the WL-LED101: it is Title 24 compliant and ADA compliant. It is not Energy Star rated. For a commercial stair or corridor in California, the Title 24 compliance is the one that usually decides whether it can go on the drawing.
10) Can I use the brushed nickel finish on an outdoor stair?
No. WAC specifies brushed nickel finishes on the 120V step lights as interior use only. For exterior runs stay with the standard cast aluminum finishes, or go stainless steel or bronze-coated brass where the air is salty.
11) Do I need to buy lamps for this, and can the LED be replaced later?
No lamps to buy. It is a single integrated LED, supplied with the fixture, and WAC lists the LED as replaceable rather than sealed in for good. The box includes the step light, the replaceable LED, the clear, amber, red and blue lenses, the junction box mounting bracket and hardware.
