WAC Lighting 5000-X18-BBR – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What thread does the WAC 5000-X18 extension rod use, and can I cut it down on site?
The 5000-X18 is an 18 inch extension rod with 1/2 inch threaded male-to-female ends. It cannot be shortened in the field, so pick the length you actually need. WAC offers the same rod in 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 inch sizes if 18 inches is wrong for the throw you want.
2) Which finish of the 5000-X18 should I use on a coastal or oceanfront property?
Go with the Bronze on Brass version, 5000-X18-BBR. That one is solid brass coated in bronze, which WAC recommends for coastal or marine environments where salt air attacks hardware. The Black on Aluminum (5000-X18-BK) and Bronze on Aluminum (5000-X18-BZ) are cast k-alloy aluminum, fine inland but not the pick for a salt-exposed site.
3) What does a landscape lighting extension rod actually do on an accent light install?
It sets the fixture off its mounting base. The rod threads between the accent or wall wash fixture and the spike, surface mount canopy, or tree mount box, raising the light above groundcover, mulch, or a growing shrub so the beam clears the planting instead of getting buried in it. At 18 inches it is a common choice for lifting an uplight out of a bed.
4) Is the WAC 5000-X18 rod rated to sit outdoors in the weather?
It is. The extension rod carries UL and cUL listings and is IP65 rated for wet locations, so it is built for exposed landscape use including rain and irrigation spray.
5) I need the fixture to turn 90 degrees off the rod. Is there a fitting for that?
Yes, WAC offers an optional L-connector for 90 degree turns, 5000-LCO-BK. It is a separate item and is not included with the extension rod, so add it to the order if you need to angle the fixture off the rod axis.
6) What finishes does the 18 inch WAC extension rod come in so it matches my existing fixtures?
Three: Black on Aluminum (5000-X18-BK), Bronze on Aluminum (5000-X18-BZ), and Bronze on Brass (5000-X18-BBR). Match the rod finish to the accent heads already on the property so the stems do not stand out against the fixtures.
7) Can I stack two extension rods to get more height than 18 inches?
The rod is threaded 1/2 inch male on one end and female on the other, so the geometry allows rods to thread into each other. WAC publishes lengths up to 24 inches, and if you need more reach than 18 inches the straightforward move is to order the 24 inch rod rather than relying on a stacked assembly.
