Modern Forms FR-W1805-80L-27-BZ – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Modern Forms Hydra ceiling fan be installed on a covered patio or other outdoor location?
Yes. The Hydra carries a Wet location rating and is UL, cUL, CSA, ETL and cETL listed, so it can go on covered patios, porches and other exposed outdoor spots as well as indoors. Wet rating means direct exposure to rain and splashing is acceptable, which is a step above a damp-rated fan limited to protected areas.
2) What blade spans does the Modern Forms FR-W1805 Hydra come in?
The Hydra is built in three sizes, identified by the number at the end of the model: FR-W1805-80 at 80 inches, FR-W1805-96 at 96 inches, and FR-W1805-120 at 120 inches. The 120 inch version uses 55.5 inch blades. All three are 8-blade fans with the same DC motor platform, so pick by room size and then by finish and color temperature.
3) Will the Hydra ceiling fan mount on a sloped ceiling?
Sloped ceilings are supported up to 30 degrees. The fan ships with a 4.5 inch downrod, which is short; on a slope or a high ceiling you will usually want a longer downrod, and those are sold separately.
4) Does a remote come with the Modern Forms Hydra, or do I have to wire a wall control?
No handheld remote is included. What ships with it is a hardwired Bluetooth wall control, part number F-WCBT-WT, so plan on a switch leg at the wall box. Beyond that it runs from the Modern Forms app and works with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Control4 and Josh AI.
5) How much air does the 120 inch Hydra actually move, and is it too much for a normal room?
Up to 13,300 CFM across 6 speeds, with 8 blades at a 14 degree pitch. That output suits great rooms, high-ceiling spaces and large covered patios. In a standard bedroom-sized room it is oversized, and the smaller 80 inch or 96 inch Hydra is the better fit. The motor is reversible for winter air circulation.
6) What do I need to order beyond the fan itself to finish a high-ceiling install?
The box covers the fan, the LED module, the luminaire cover and the 4.5 inch downrod plus the F-WCBT-WT Bluetooth wall control. For anything beyond a low mounting height you will need a longer Modern Forms downrod, ordered separately. There is no handheld remote in the carton, so add one if the job calls for it. The installation guide is published as a PDF with the product.
7) What voltage does the FR-W1805 Hydra run on?
It is a 120V fan, standard single-phase residential and light commercial power in North America. The DC motor runs off an onboard driver, so no separate transformer is needed, but it does require a hardwired 120V feed to the Bluetooth wall control.
8) What color temperatures and finishes can I order the Hydra in, and do they all pair?
Color temperature choices are 2700K, 3000K and 3500K, all at 2100 lumens and 90 CRI. Finishes run Titanium, Bronze and Matte White. The combinations are not uniform across sizes: Titanium is offered in all three Kelvin values in every span, Matte White pairs with 2700K and 3500K on the 80 inch, and Bronze pairs with 2700K on the 80 inch and 3500K on the 120 inch. If you are matching several fans across a property, Titanium is the finish available across the widest set.
9) Can the Hydra's light be dimmed, and can the LED be replaced when it fails?
The LED luminaire dims continuously and the module is replaceable, so the whole fan does not have to come down at end of life. It is an integrated LED module rather than a screw-in lamp, rated 50,000 hours, with a flood distribution at 2100 lumens. A cover is included if you want to run the fan without the light showing.
10) Are the Hydra fan blades going to hold up outdoors?
Blades are aluminum, finished in Titanium on most configurations, which is why the fan carries a wet rating rather than a damp one. Wood or MDF blades are what fail in exposed locations; aluminum does not swell or delaminate. The assembly is factory balanced and sound tested.
11) Is the Modern Forms Hydra ceiling fan ADA compliant or Energy Star rated?
Neither. The Hydra is not ADA compliant and is not Energy Star certified. If an institutional spec calls for Energy Star fans, this one will not satisfy it. It does carry UL, cUL, CSA, ETL and cETL wet location listing, and the DC motor is stated to run up to 70% more efficient than an AC motor.
