Metallics QB27 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is an 11/16 inch bit the right size for running NM cable through studs?
An 11/16 inch bore is the common electrical rough-in size for pulling one or two runs of residential NM cable through wood framing, which is why the QB27 is sold as an electrical bit rather than a general carpentry one. For larger bundles or conduit sleeving you want a bigger diameter bit.
2) Why choose a 16 inch flat bit instead of a short spade bit for electrical rough-in?
Length is the whole point of the QB27. At 16 inches overall it lets you reach into a bay from one side, drill through a double top plate, or angle through a joist without pulling the drill back and chucking an extension. A standard short spade bit does the same 11/16 inch hole but only where you can get the drill square to the face. For holes deeper than the bit's reach or through steel framing, a flat wood bit is the wrong tool.
3) Can I use the Metallics QB27 to drill through metal studs or masonry?
No. It is a wood bit, ground for framing lumber, plywood, and similar wood products. Drilling steel studs needs a step bit or a hole saw rated for metal, and masonry needs a carbide-tipped bit. Running this one through metal will ruin the cutting edge in a hole or two.
4) Does the Metallics QB27 come as a single bit or in a set?
One bit per pouch. The QB27 is sold individually, so if you are stocking a van or standardizing a crew's drill kit you order the quantity of bits you need rather than buying a multi-size set.
5) Will the QB27 work in a standard cordless drill chuck?
The QB27 is a flat wood boring bit with a hex shank, the standard shape for spade-type bits, which seats in a three-jaw keyless chuck or a quick-change hex holder. Note that boring 11/16 inch holes at 16 inch depth in framing loads a drill hard, so a drill with a side handle or a low-speed setting is easier to control.
