Metallics QB25 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size hole does the Metallics QB25 Quik-Bit drill, and how long is it?
The QB25 is a 9/16 inch flat wood boring bit with a 16 inch overall length. The 9/16 inch cut is the common size electricians use for running cable through studs and joists, and the 16 inch length lets you reach through a stud bay or bore several framing members in line without an extension.
2) Is the 9/16 inch Quik-Bit big enough to pull 12/2 or 14/2 NM cable through studs?
A 9/16 inch hole is the size most electricians drill for pulling single runs of 14/2 or 12/2 NM through wood studs and joists, and the QB25 cuts exactly that. If you need to pull two or three cables through the same hole, step up to a larger bit so the jacket is not scraped on the pull.
3) Is the Metallics QB25 a spade bit or an auger bit?
It is a flat (spade/paddle) wood bit, not an auger. A spade bit like the QB25 clears fast in soft framing lumber and costs less to replace when it hits a nail, but it does not self-feed the way an auger does, so you push it through. For deep boring through engineered lumber or stacked plates, a self-feeding auger is the better tool.
4) Can I use the Metallics QB25 on metal studs?
No. It is a wood bit, cut for soft framing lumber, and the spade geometry will dull or grab in steel. For metal studs use a step bit or a hole saw rated for sheet steel, and bush the opening before pulling cable.
5) How many bits come in a Metallics QB25 pack?
One bit per pack, supplied in a pouch. If you are drilling a full rough-in and expect to burn through bits on nail plates or hidden fasteners, order multiples rather than assuming a set.
