Metallics JFMP194 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a flat head machine screw sit flush, or do I need a countersunk hole?
Flat head means it only sits flush in a countersunk or chamfered hole. The head measures 0.38 to 0.412 in. across with a head height of 0.112 to 0.132 in., so in a plain punched hole it will stand proud by roughly that head height. For flush cover plates and trims that is the point; if your plate is not countersunk, use a round or pan head instead.
2) Do Metallics JFMP194 machine screws meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a government job?
No. The JFMP194 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. If your contract carries a domestic sourcing clause, this screw will not satisfy it and you need a domestically produced fastener.
3) What size Phillips driver do I need for these 12-24 flat head screws?
A #3 Phillips. The recess is 0.262 in. diameter, 0.144 in. deep with a 0.035 in. width, so a #2 bit will cam out and chew the recess under torque. Keep a #3 in the pouch if you are running these by drill.
4) Is zinc plated steel good enough for a damp location or outdoor box?
Zinc plated carbon steel handles dry interior work well, which is what these are built for: electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning applications. In a wet or exterior location, or anywhere washdown or chemicals are involved, zinc plating will eventually give up and the screw rusts into the tapped hole. Go stainless for those openings.
5) Will these screws match the dimensions on my spec drawing for a flat head machine screw?
Head and recess geometry are produced to ASME B18.6.3-1998, the dimensional standard for inch slotted and recessed head machine screws, with threads to ANSI/ASME B1.1. Gaging diameter is 0.362 with protrusion of 0.027 to 0.045 above gage. If your drawing calls out B18.6.3 flat head, 12-24, these conform.
6) What is the difference between a 12-24 machine screw and a 12-24 sheet metal or self tapping screw?
A machine screw like the JFMP194 has a uniform 24 TPI UNC machine thread and a blunt end. It needs an existing tapped hole or a nut; it will not form its own thread. Boxes, plaster rings, fixture straps and enclosures come pre-tapped 12-24, which is where this belongs. If you are driving into unthreaded sheet metal with no nut behind it, you want a self tapping or sheet metal screw instead.
7) How are these 12-24 x 3/4 machine screws packaged, and what is the minimum I can buy?
They come in a jar of 100, and 100 is the order minimum. Shop weight is 0.7 lbs per jar. Good MRO shelf format if you are stocking a van or a maintenance cage rather than buying a bulk box.
