ACSI K-128 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Which exit devices does the ACSI K-128 request-to-exit switch kit fit?
The K-128 is built for Design Hardware 1000 Series exit devices. It is a device-specific kit, so it will not drop into a Von Duprin, Sargent, Falcon or other brand push bar. ACSI builds a separate kit for each of those families, for example the K-100 for Von Duprin 33A, 35A, 98 and 99, the K-103 for Sargent 80 Series, and the K-129 for Falcon 24 and 25.
2) What switch contacts does the ACSI K-128 kit use, and can it switch my mag lock power directly?
The kit uses a single SPDT (single pole double throw) switch assembly rated 3A at 125VAC and 2A at 30VDC. Most 12 or 24VDC mag locks draw well under 2A, so the switch can break lock power directly within that rating, and the double-throw contact gives you both a normally open and a normally closed leg off one switch. If you need two independent circuits, such as releasing a lock and shunting an alarm on separate contacts, ACSI builds DPDT versions in this family (K-200, K-203, K-226) for other device brands.
3) What does the K-128 switch actually sense on the exit device?
It senses the push bar. The switch mounts inside the device and is actuated when the actuating bar is depressed, so it signals the moment someone pushes to exit, not when the latch retracts or the door swings. That is what makes it a request-to-exit device: instant release of a mag lock for free egress, shunting a door alarm so legitimate exits do not trip it, or sending a signal to a control console. If you need to know the latch itself is thrown rather than the bar pressed, that is a latch bolt monitor job, which ACSI covers with the K-123 and K-127 kits.
4) Is the ACSI K-128 a field install kit or does the exit device have to come from the factory with the switch?
Field install. ACSI Series K switch kits are made to be added to exit devices already hanging on the door, and the K-128 ships as a switch assembly with long wire leads plus installation instructions. The long leads matter on a retrofit: they give you enough slack to run out through the device and into a door cord or power transfer without splicing inside the chassis.
5) Can I use the K-128 kit on a fire rated exit device opening?
The K-128 switch kit itself carries no fire rating. It is an electrical component added to the device, not a labeled assembly, so if the opening is fire rated you need to confirm the exit device and door label allow the field-added switch before you cut into the chassis.
6) Do I need a request-to-exit switch if my doors already have mag locks and a push bar?
If a mag lock holds the opening, something has to drop power the instant the bar is pushed, and a switch kit like the K-128 inside a Design Hardware 1000 Series device is the way it is normally done. Pushing the bar throws the SPDT contact and releases the lock for free egress in the same motion. Without that switch, the bar retracts the latch but the magnet still holds the door shut.
7) I have a mix of exit device brands in the building. Can one ACSI switch kit cover them all?
No. The Series K kits are matched to the device, so you order by whatever is on each door. The K-128 covers Design Hardware 1000 Series only. Across a mixed building you would also be looking at the K-101 for Von Duprin 55, the K-102 for Von Duprin 88, the K-104 for Sargent 9600/9700/9800/9900, the K-106 for Adams Rite 8000 and 3000, the K-107 for Corbin Russwin 8000 and Yale 2100, the K-125 for Dorma 9000, the K-126 for Hager 4500/4600, PDQ 6200 and Stanley QED100/200/300, and the K-130 for Jackson 20 Series.
8) Is the ACSI K-128 suitable for commercial access control, or is it a residential part?
It is a commercial electronic access control component, used on commercial exit devices in buildings where a mag lock or door alarm needs a free-egress signal. A property manager standardizing a building on Design Hardware 1000 Series bars can spec the K-128 across every one of those openings and keep a single part number in the MRO stock.
