1) Will the Adams Rite 4512 deadlatch fit my narrow stile aluminum storefront door?
Narrow stile aluminum doors are what the 4512 is built for, and it mortises into a 1-3/4 inch thick door. The latch body measures 1 x 5-13/16 inches with the faceplate at 1 x 6-7/8 inches, so the stile has to accept that depth of prep. Hollow metal and wood door versions are also offered. If your door is anything other than 1-3/4 inches thick, this is the wrong latch.
2) What backset do I need to order on an Adams Rite 4512 deadlatch?
Backset is the first thing to measure, because the 4512 comes in four of them: 31/32 inch, 7/8 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/2 inch. Measure from the edge of the stile to the centerline of the cylinder hole on the door you are replacing. Getting this wrong means the cylinder will not line up with the existing prep, and there is no adjustment in the latch to make up the difference.
3) Is the Adams Rite 4512 handed, and how do I tell which hand I need?
Handing matters. The 4512 is ordered as either LH or RHR, or RH or LHR, so the latch is specific to the swing of the opening. Stand outside the door: if the hinges are on your left and the door pulls toward you, that is left hand. A latch bought for the wrong hand will not latch in the strike.
4) Will a 1/2 inch throw deadlatch latch into the strike I already have on the frame?
The 4512 throws a 1/2 inch latchbolt, with the bolt itself measuring 1/2 x 1 x 1/2 inches. Against a flat jamb where the door closes flush, the matching strike is the Adams Rite 4902-01. Strikes are also ordered in flat/standard jamb or radius/standard stile shape, and in 2-5/8 inch or 4-5/8 inch mortised sizes, so the existing frame cutout decides which one you need. A deeper-throw device or a strike cut for a different lip will not engage this bolt correctly.
5) Does the Adams Rite 4512 deadlatch come with a cylinder?
No cylinder ships with the 4512. It takes a standard mortise cylinder with the Adams Rite MS cam, ordered separately, so you can key it into whatever system the building already runs. Mounting screws are included with the latch. Budget the cylinder into the job before you order.
6) Is the BEST 6KL deadlatch an equivalent to the Adams Rite 4512?
They are both deadlocking latches, but they are prepared for different doors. The Adams Rite 4512 is a standard duty deadlatch built for 1-3/4 inch doors with a 1/2 inch latch throw, a 1/2 inch x 1 inch x 1/2 inch latchbolt, and a Grade 1 rating, and it takes a mortise cylinder that is ordered separately. The BEST 6KL is a Grade 2 deadlocking latch of steel construction in the 6K Series. If the opening is a narrow stile aluminum door already cut for the 4510 Series mortise and its 1 inch x 5-13/16 inch body, the 4512 is the part that drops into that prep; the 6KL belongs to a different lock family and prep.
7) The spec calls for a Grade 1 deadlatch. Does the BEST 6KL meet it?
The BEST 6KL is a Grade 2 deadlocking latch. The Adams Rite 4512 carries a Grade 1 rating, so on an opening where the drawing or the facility standard calls for Grade 1, the 4512 is the one that answers the spec. Both are commercial deadlocking latches; the difference is the grade line they are certified to.
8) What does bolt holdback do on a deadlatch, and do I want it on a storefront?
Holdback is what lets a shop stay open without unlocking anything by hand at the door. Turning the key in reverse holds the latchbolt retracted, so the door pushes freely during business hours; turn it back and the latch deadlocks again at close. On a retail or office storefront that runs open hours then locks down, that is the whole reason to spec the 4512 over a plain deadlatch.
