The door station calls the master(s) by pressing a call button that initiates a chime. Communication is Push to talk/release to listen at the master and hands-free at the door station. Aiphone CCS-1A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What comes in the Aiphone CCS-1A ChimeCom 2 set, and do I need anything else to make it work?
The CCS-1A set ships with one CC-DA door station and one CC-1M master station. The master needs a PT-1210N power supply, which is a separate order, and you also need the wire: 2 conductor with an overall shield, Aiphone #822202 (22AWG) or #821802 (18AWG). Budget for the power supply and the cable on the same PO or the job stalls at rough-in.
2) Can I add a second master station to an Aiphone ChimeCom 2 so two desks can answer the door?
Yes, additional masters can be added to the ChimeCom 2 system. Each added master requires its own PT-1210N power supply, so a two-station front office needs two power supplies, not one shared. That is the usual setup where a receptionist and a back office both need to buzz-talk the entrance.
3) Does the Aiphone ChimeCom 2 unlock the door, or is it audio only?
Audio only. The door station has a lighted call button that rings a chime at the master, and the two stations talk. There is no door release function in the CCS-1A set, so if the goal is buzzing someone in remotely, this is not the system to spec. Pair it with a separate electric strike and release circuit, or step up to an Aiphone entry security set that includes door release.
4) Is the Aiphone ChimeCom 2 hands-free at both ends, or do you hold a button to talk?
It is split. At the master station you press to talk and release to listen, which is simplex, one direction at a time. At the door station it is hands-free, so the visitor just speaks. Anyone expecting full duplex open-voice conversation at the desk will find this different from what they are used to, and the call also drops itself after twenty seconds of silence.
5) Is the Aiphone CCS-1A intercom suitable for a commercial building or is it a residential unit?
It is classed as commercial hardware, and the typical fit is a single entrance answered from one or two points: a small office suite, a shop back door, a warehouse man door, a clinic reception. It is a two-station point-to-point chime intercom, not a building-wide apartment entry system, so a multi-tenant lobby with a directory needs a different Aiphone platform.
6) How does the Aiphone ChimeCom 2 mount, and can I set the volume down in a quiet office?
Both stations are wall mount. The master has separate chime and voice volume controls, so you can drop the chime in a quiet reception area without losing the speech level, or run the chime up in a noisy shop. The door station's call button is backlit, which is the detail that matters at an unlit entrance after dark.
7) Why does the Aiphone ChimeCom 2 call cut off on its own while someone is still at the door?
Communication times out after twenty seconds idle, by design. It is an automatic shut-off so a master left keyed open does not sit live. If the conversation drops, the visitor presses the call button again. Property managers standardizing on these should tell front-desk staff that behavior up front, otherwise it gets reported as a fault.
