1) Does the Alarm Controls MCK-3 key station come with the mortise cylinder?
No cylinder is included. The MCK-3 stainless steel wall plate is prepped to accept a standard 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder, which you order separately. Alarm Controls lists the CY-1 and CY-1A cylinders for it. If you are keying the station into an existing master system, that is the part your locksmith supplies, and any 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder in your keyway will land in the plate. Tamper-proof and slotted-head screws do ship with the station.
2) How deep behind the wall plate does the MCK-3 keyswitch need?
Switch depth behind the plate is 1-1/4 inches. That is the clear space you need inside the single gang box or the narrow stile rail once the plate is on. On a hollow metal jamb or a narrow stile aluminum door with limited cavity, measure that 1-1/4 inches before you cut. Note the cylinder itself sits behind the plate as well, so the box has to take the switch body plus the tailpiece of a 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinder.
3) Should I order momentary or alternate action on the MCK-3 key switch?
Momentary means the switch transfers only while the key is turned and springs back, which is what you want for a release to a maglock or strike, a single unlock pulse per key turn. Alternate action latches in position, so a key turn leaves the circuit held until someone turns it back. Use alternate when the key station is putting a door into a maintained state, like unlocking a storefront for business hours or shunting an alarm for the day. Both are stocked on the MCK-3.
4) SPDT or DPDT on a key station, which do I need?
Count your circuits. SPDT gives you one set of transfer contacts, enough to break power to a single maglock or fire a strike. DPDT gives you two isolated sets on the same key turn, so you can drop the lock with one and simultaneously shunt a door contact, signal the access panel, or trigger an auto operator with the other. The MCK-3 is built both ways in momentary and in alternate action, so pick the pole count first and the action second.
5) Can the MCK-3 key switch directly switch power to a magnetic lock?
Contacts on the MCK-3 are rated 4A at 28 VDC, so it will carry the current of typical low voltage door hardware directly on a 12 or 24 VDC circuit. Anything above 28 VDC, or a load drawing more than 4 amps, has to go through a relay rather than through the key switch contacts. Switch leads come out of the back color coded for termination.
6) What voltage do the red and green LEDs on the MCK-3 run on?
The LEDs work on 12 or 24 VDC or VAC, so they drop onto the same supply feeding most access control hardware without a separate power source. The red and green pair is normally wired to show locked versus released state, which is why property managers put this version on a main entry where staff need to see at a glance whether the door is held open. Versions with green only, or no LED at all, exist in the MCK family if you do not need the two-state indication.
7) Can an MCK-3 mortise key station be installed outdoors or on an exterior entry?
Operating range is +15 to 120F, which covers most exterior entries but not hard winter climates. For any wet or exposed location, the plate alone is not enough, you add the WP option for a weather resistant cover and surface mount box. WP is only offered on single gang models, which the MCK-3 is, so it is available here. On a protected interior vestibule or lobby, the bare satin stainless plate is all you need.
8) Can I get a key station that keeps the door unlocked for a set time after the key turn?
Timed hold is not on the MCK-3 itself, it is a build option in the MCK line, a pneumatic time delay adjustable from 2 to 45 seconds. That is the model to specify when you want a key turn to release a door long enough for a delivery or an ADA operator cycle and then relock on its own, instead of relying on someone turning the key back. If you only need a release pulse, the momentary MCK-3 does it without a timer.
9) What finish is the Alarm Controls MCK-3 wall plate and will it match other hardware on the door?
Satin stainless steel, and the plate is stainless rather than plated, so it wears rather than flakes on a high traffic entry. It reads as a match against US32D / 630 satin stainless exit device trim and push plates, which is the standard commercial door finish and the one most storefront and institutional openings are already running. No other finish is offered on the MCK-3.
10) Is the MCK-3 key station tamper resistant enough for a public entrance?
Tamper-proof screws ship with the station along with standard slotted-head screws, so you can mount it on the public side of a lobby or storefront door and not leave it removable with a screwdriver. Combined with the stainless plate and a mortise cylinder keyed to your building system, the release is only operable by a keyholder. It is rated commercial, not a residential device.
