If you already keep 1-1/8 inch mortise cylinders on a facility keyway, you can key the station into the same system rather than buying a new one.
2) How deep does the MCK-4 key switch station sit behind the wall plate?
Switch depth behind the plate is 1-1/4 inches. That is what has to clear inside a single gang box, so measure your box depth and anything already occupying it before you cut in. On surface applications, ordering the WP weather resistant version brings its own surface mount box, so you are not depending on what is in the wall.
3) Should I order momentary or alternate action on a key switch station?
Momentary makes contact only while the key is turned, then springs back. That is what you want for a door release or a request-to-exit pulse where the door should relock the moment you let go. Alternate action latches: turn the key and the contacts stay transferred until you turn it back. Use that for arming and disarming, putting a door on free access for the day, or shunting an alarm point. The MCK-4 is offered in both, in SPDT and DPDT.
4) Will an MCK-4 key switch handle the current for my maglock or electric strike?
Contacts are rated 4 amps at 28 VDC. That covers a typical maglock or a strike drawing well under an amp, and it covers a relay coil comfortably. If the load is a high-inrush device or anything on line voltage, switch a relay with the station and let the relay carry the load rather than running it through the key switch contacts.
5) Can I mount an Alarm Controls MCK-4 key station outside?
Ordered with the WP option, yes. That adds a weather resistant cover and a surface mount box, and Alarm Controls offers it on single gang models, which is what the MCK-4 is. Operating range is +15 to 120F, so a cold northern exterior gate or an unheated garage below 15 degrees is outside what the station is rated for. Without WP the station is an interior flush-mount device.
6) Is there a key switch that holds a door released for a set time without anyone standing there?
The MCK-4 is offered with a pneumatic time delay adjustable from 2 to 45 seconds. Turn the key and the contacts hold for the interval you have set, then drop out on their own. That is the option for a delivery door or a service entrance where someone needs a window to get through with hands full, and it does it mechanically, with no timer module to power or program. If you want the door to stay open until someone comes back and turns the key, order alternate action instead.
7) SPDT or DPDT on an Alarm Controls key station, which do I need?
Count the circuits you have to switch. SPDT gives you one set of transfer contacts, enough to release a single mag lock or strike. DPDT gives you two independent sets from one key turn, which is how you drop a lock and shunt the alarm zone at the same time, or release a lock while signalling the access panel.
