Arrow 38-81-E-10 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow 3880 rim exit device fit a 1-3/8 inch door?
No. The Arrow 3880 rim exit bar is built for 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, and that is the only thickness the device is set up for. A 1-3/8 inch leaf is an older interior thickness and is not what this chassis is dimensioned for. If you are working with thicker doors, the Dormakaba 9300 Series wide stile rim device covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches, and the Adams Rite 8800 Series covers the same 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 range in a narrow stile.
2) Do I have to specify a hand when ordering the Arrow 3880 rim device?
Yes, handing matters here. The 3880 is a handed device and you specify either LHRB or RHRB when you order. Stand outside the door, on the side you pull from: if the hinges are on your right and the door swings away from you, that is RHRB. Get it wrong and the pushpad and latch orientation will not match your opening. If you would rather not track handing across a building, the Von Duprin 22 Series and the BEST 2401 Series are non-handed wide and narrow stile rim devices respectively.
3) Is the Arrow 3880 exit device fire rated?
As supplied, no. The standard Arrow 3880 is a panic device, UL and CUL listed for the accident hazard (panic) standard, not fire exit hardware. Fire exit hardware in this family carries an "F" prefix before the part number and is UL/CUL listed for 3 hour A label hollow metal doors and lesser, and up to 1-1/2 hour B label wood doors. If you need a fire rated rim device off the shelf, the Marks USA M9900F in 36 and 48 inch, the Orca OED85 Series 36 inch, and the Dexter ED1000 Series fire rated rim device are all fire rated.
4) Will the Arrow 3880 latch into the strike I already have on the frame?
The 3880 uses a stainless steel latchbolt with a 3/4 inch throw and it ships as a rim device, so it needs a surface mounted rim strike on the frame stop, not a mortised ANSI strike. If the door currently has a mortise or cylindrical lock strike pocket, that prep will not work and you will be mounting the supplied rim strike instead. Rail projection off the door face is 3-1/4 inches maximum, which is what you check against any adjacent wall or door stop.
5) Can I use the Arrow 3880 on a pair of doors?
Yes, with a mullion. Being a rim device, the 3880 latches into a strike at the stop rather than at the head and threshold, so a pair needs a removable mullion between the leaves. Arrow lists fire exit hardware coverage up to a 4 x 8 foot single door and 8 x 8 foot pairs using the S21 mullion. If you need a pair with a clear opening and no mullion in the middle, a concealed or surface vertical rod device is the right type instead, such as the Hager 4501 Series concealed vertical rod with wide stile pushpad.
6) Is the Arrow 3880 Grade 1 and does it meet ADA?
Both, yes. The 3880 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, is UL and CUL listed, and complies with NFPA 101 life safety code. It is ADA compliant and meets the ANSI A117.1 accessibility code, which matters if you are standardizing exit hardware across a school, healthcare, or government facility where Grade 1 is typically specified.
7) What is the difference between the Arrow 3880 and a narrow stile rim device?
The 3880 is a wide stile pushpad device, so it needs the stile width of a typical hollow metal or wood commercial door. On an aluminum storefront with a 2 to 4 inch stile it will not fit, and you want a narrow stile device instead, such as the Corbin Russwin ED4200, the TownSteel ED3700, or the Falcon 19-R Series, all Grade 1 narrow stile rim devices. Stay wide stile and the closest cross-brand equivalents are the Corbin Russwin ED5200 and the Von Duprin 22 Series, both Grade 1 wide stile rim devices for 1-3/4 inch doors.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to the Arrow 3880 Series wide stile rim exit bar?
The Von Duprin 22-3FT is the nearest match in a 36 inch wide stile pushpad rim device at Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same door thickness the Arrow 3880 is built for. One working difference: the Von Duprin 22-3FT is non-handed, while the Arrow 3880 is handed and has to be ordered LHRB or RHRB. The Corbin Russwin ED5200 is another 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the TownSteel ED9700 covers the same 36 inch wide stile Grade 1 heavy duty description.
9) I need to cover a door wider than what the Arrow 3880 handles - what are the 48 inch rim options?
The Arrow 3880 in this configuration is a 36 inch device. For a wider leaf, the Dormakaba 9300 Series is a 48 inch wide stile panic rim, exit only, Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a 48 inch Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim for 1-3/4 inch doors, the CRL Jackson 1095 is a 48 inch wide stile crossbar rim exit only, and the Dexter ED1000-R-EO-4FT is a Grade 1 rim device in the 4 foot size. Sargent 2828 and 3828 are Grade 1 reversible rim devices for 48 inch doors.
10) The Arrow 3880 is handed - what wide stile rim device can I stock as one part for both hands?
The Arrow 3880 is handed and must be specified LHRB or RHRB. If you are standardizing a building and want one SKU on the shelf, the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is a non-handed push pad rim panic device, wide stile, exit only, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch non-handed wide stile pushpad Grade 1 device, the Sargent 2828 and 3828 are Grade 1 reversible rim devices, and the BEST Precision 5101 is a non-handed universal design rim device.
11) Which rim exit devices look like a substitute for the Arrow 3880 but are not?
A few in the same aisle will not do the same job. The Hager 4501 and 4601 are Grade 1 exit devices but concealed vertical rod, not rim, so they need a top and bottom rod prep the 3880 does not. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a wide stile dummy device with no latching. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a wide stile fire rated device in a dummy function. The SDC MSB550 and PSB560 are switch and pressure sense bars that release an electromagnetic lock rather than throw a mechanical latchbolt, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar. The Arrow 3880 is a mechanical rim device with a stainless steel latchbolt at 3/4 inch throw.
12) The Arrow 3880 is exit only - what if I need outside trim or a night latch?
The Arrow 3880 in this configuration is an exit only device. If the opening needs outside access, the Corbin Russwin ED5200 is a 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile rim that accepts trim, and the ED4200 does the same in narrow stile. For a night latch pull, the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device supplied with night latch trim, and the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow design rim device in night latch function.
13) Does the Arrow 3880 come with dogging, and can I get key dogging?
Allen key dogging is standard on the 3880, so you can hold the pushpad down and leave the door in a push-pull state during business hours with a hex key. If you want dogging controlled by a keyed cylinder instead of a loose allen wrench, order with the "CD" prefix for cylinder dogging. Note that dogging is not permitted on fire rated openings.
14) What mounting hardware ships with the Arrow 3880, and do I need thru bolts?
The 3880 ships with wood and machine screws. Thru bolts are available as an option and are worth ordering for high-traffic or abuse-prone openings where machine screws into the door skin will work loose. Exit only, so there is no outside trim in the box; if you need outside key access or a lever, that trim is a separate order.
15) Can the Arrow 3880 be electrified for access control?
The 3880 is a mechanical exit only device. For an opening that has to tie into access control, look at a purpose-built electrified bar: the SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified architectural rim device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, the SDC PSB560 SureExit is a pressure sense bar for narrow or wide stile, and the Dormakaba E2103 is an electrified 36 inch rim device with 4908A trim.
16) Is there a lower-grade wide stile rim exit device if Grade 1 is more than my opening calls for?
The Arrow 3880 is ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. If the opening is specified at Grade 2, the Cal-Royal 5000 is a 36 inch wide rim exit device with a touch bar and Grade 2 chassis, and the Cal-Royal 5500 is the 48 inch push bar version, both listed as heavy duty. The Design Hardware 2000R is a 33 inch standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging, against the Design Hardware 1000R which is the heavy duty rim in the same 33 inch size.
17) Can I use the Arrow 3880 on a wood door, and what should I look at if I cannot?
The Arrow 3880 in this configuration is listed as not wood door compatible. Among rim devices that do carry wood door compatibility, the Adams Rite 8700 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim and the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch fire rated narrow stile rim are both Grade 1 and wood door compatible. Note both are narrow stile designs rather than the wide stile pushpad format of the 3880.
18) What finishes does the Arrow 3880 exit bar come in, and will it match my other doors?
Seven finishes are orderable: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 dark oxidized satin bronze oil rubbed, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. 630 satin stainless is the usual choice for matching existing commercial openings. The rail and chassis cover are roll-formed and cold drawn brass, bronze, or stainless depending on the finish you pick, so the material follows the finish.
19) Is a crossbar exit device a better choice than the Arrow 3880 pushpad?
They do the same job in the same opening, and the choice is about matching what is already on your building and about touch preference. The 3880 is a pushpad bar, which is the current standard and gives a flat, easy-to-clean face. If you are replacing crossbar hardware and want the look to match adjacent doors, the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 wide stile crossbar rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the CRL Jackson 1095 Series is a 48 inch crossbar rim panic device.
