Arrow 38-81-G-10 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is this Arrow exit bar fire rated, and what do I order if I need fire exit hardware?
As catalogued, the 48 inch Arrow 3880 device is not fire rated. Arrow's fire exit hardware in this family is ordered with an "F" prefix before the part number, which is UL and CUL listed for 3 hour A label and lesser hollow metal doors, and up to 1-1/2 hour B label wood doors. If you want a fire rated device from another line, the Marks USA M9900F comes in a 48 inch exit only version, and Orca OED85 and Dexter ED1000-R-F are fire rated rim devices as well.
2) Can a 48 inch exit bar be used on a pair of doors?
A rim device latches into a strike at the frame or mullion, not at the head and sill. For a pair, Arrow lists fire exit hardware coverage up to 8 feet by 8 feet pairs when used with an S21 mullion, so the second leaf needs that mullion to give the rim latch something to catch. Single doors are covered up to 4 feet by 8 feet. If you cannot use a mullion on the pair, a vertical rod device is the right type instead, such as the Hager 4501 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad.
3) Can this exit device be dogged down so the door stays push-open during business hours?
Yes. Allen (hex) key dogging is standard on the 3880, which holds the pushpad depressed and leaves the latch retracted for free push-pull during open hours. If you want dogging controlled by a key rather than a hex wrench, order the cylinder dogging version using the "CD" prefix. Note that fire exit hardware cannot be dogged, so a device ordered with the F prefix will not have this feature.
4) Does the Arrow 3880 exit bar meet Grade 1 and ADA requirements for a school or healthcare exit?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, UL and CUL listed for the accident hazard (panic) standard, and complies with NFPA 101 life safety code. It is also ADA compliant and meets ANSI A117.1 accessibility code, and the pushpad operates with a single motion as egress hardware. Fire rated openings need the F prefix version.
5) The Arrow 3880 is handed. Which rim exit devices are non-handed or reversible instead?
The Arrow 3880 must be ordered LHRB or RHRB. If you want to avoid specifying hand, the Von Duprin 22 in 36-inch is a non-handed Grade 1 wide stile pushpad rim device, the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is a non-handed push pad rim panic device for 1-3/4 inch doors, the BEST 2401 is narrow stile exit only non-handed, and the BEST Precision 5101 uses a non-handed universal design. Sargent 2828 and 3828 are reversible Grade 1 wide stile devices for 48-inch doors.
6) What is the closest 48-inch Grade 1 wide stile rim exit alternative to the Arrow 3880 for a 1-3/4 inch metal door?
The Dormakaba DORMA 9300 Series 48-inch wide stile panic rim exit device is the nearest match: Grade 1, wide stile, exit only, heavy duty, with a 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. The Arrow 3880 in the 48-inch size is also Grade 1 wide stile with a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. The Corbin Russwin ED3200 is another 48-inch Grade 1 wide stile rim device at 1-3/4 inch door thickness, but it uses a crossbar rather than a pushpad rail.
7) The Arrow 3880 48-inch is not fire rated. What fire rated 48-inch rim exit device can I use on a labeled opening?
The Marks USA M9900F in the 48-inch size is a fire rated rim panic exit device, exit only, with a panic protector end cap. Smaller fire rated rim options include the Marks USA M9900F 36-inch, the Orca Hardware OED85 Series 36-inch, and the Dexter ED1000 Series fire rated rim device, which is Grade 1. The standard Arrow 3880 48-inch is a non-fire-rated panic device.
8) Will this Arrow rim device latch into my existing rim strike?
The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) throw, which is the usual rim device throw, so it engages a standard surface mounted rim strike. Check that your existing strike is set for a rim latch and not a vertical rod top latch, and that the strike position matches the new device's centerline on the frame.
9) How much does this exit bar project into the opening?
Rail projection on the Arrow 3880 is 3-1/4 inches (82.55 mm) maximum. That matters where the door swings into a tight vestibule or corridor, or where the bar could clash with an adjacent wall, pull, or another leaf when the door is open.
10) What mounting hardware comes with the Arrow 3880, and can I get thru bolts?
Wood and machine screws are supplied with the device. Thru bolts are available as an option and are worth specifying on high traffic or abuse prone openings where screws into a hollow metal face can work loose.
11) What is the difference between a wide stile pushpad device like this and a narrow stile rim device?
The 3880 is a wide stile pushpad device, which needs enough door stile behind it to mount the chassis, so it suits hollow metal and similar doors with a conventional stile. A narrow stile rim device is what you use on an aluminum storefront or any leaf with a thin vertical stile: examples we carry include the TownSteel ED3700, the Corbin Russwin ED4200, and the Falcon 19-R. Picking wide stile for a narrow stile door is the most common ordering mistake on rim devices.
12) This Arrow device is exit only. How do I get outside trim or an electrified option?
Exit only means there is no outside trim on the device as configured, so the door is push-to-exit with no exterior entry. If you need key or lever entry from the outside, a device family built to accept trim is the better route: the Corbin Russwin ED5200 lists exit only plus accepts trim, as does the ED4200 in narrow stile, and Detex V4003A/03AN is a wide stile device offered with night latch trim. For electrified access control, the SDC S6000 Series electrified wide stile rim device and the Dormakaba E2103 with 4908A trim are the options in this category.
13) What finishes does the Arrow 3880 exit bar come in, and can I match brass hardware already on my building?
Seven finishes are orderable: 605 Bright Brass, 606 Satin Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, 613 Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze (Oil Rubbed), 613E Dark Oxidized Satin Bronze Equivalent, 629 Bright Stainless Steel, and 630 Satin Stainless Steel. The rail and chassis cover are rolled and cold drawn brass, bronze, or stainless depending on finish, so a brass finish is brass material rather than plated steel. 605 and 606 are the ones to pick against existing bright or satin brass hardware; 630 is the usual choice for schools and healthcare.
14) I need a crossbar style panic device instead of a pushpad for a 48 inch door. What are my options?
The Arrow 3880 is a pushpad device, not a crossbar. If the specification or existing hardware calls for a crossbar on a 4 foot leaf, the CRL Jackson 1095 Series 48 inch crossbar rim panic device and the Corbin Russwin ED3000 Series 48 inch crossbar rim device are the crossbar options at that width; the ED3000 is Grade 1 and listed for 1-3/4 inch doors.
15) Is there a Grade 2 rim exit device instead of the Grade 1 Arrow 3880 for a lower traffic door?
Cal-Royal offers Grade 2 rim devices, including the 5500 in 48 inch wide with a push bar and the 5000 in 36 inch wide with a touch bar, both heavy duty and non-fire-rated for metal doors. The Design Hardware 2000R is a standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging in 33 inch. The Arrow 3880 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1.
16) Can I use an SDC exit bar or a Securitron EMB in place of the Arrow 3880 rim exit device?
Not as a direct swap. The SDC MSB550 Series is a mechanical switch bar with electromagnetic lock release and the SDC SureExit PSB560 is a pressure sense bar with tri-failsafe technology, both 36 inch and intended to signal or release an electrified lock rather than latch the door. The Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar. The Arrow 3880 is a mechanical rim exit device with a stainless steel latchbolt and 3/4 inch throw that latches into a rim strike on its own.
17) Which rim exit devices are electrified if the Arrow 3880 mechanical device will not meet my access control spec?
The SDC S6136 Spectra S6000 Series is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile and a 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch door thickness range. The Dormakaba E2103 is a 36 inch electrified rim device supplied with 4908A trim in a classroom function, and the Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated wide stile rim device with RX and MELR. The Arrow 3880 is a mechanical device with Allen type dogging standard and optional cylinder dogging under the CD prefix.
18) The Arrow 3880 rim device latches into a strike. What should I use if the opening needs a vertical rod device?
For concealed vertical rod openings, Hager offers the 4501 Series in 36 inch with a wide stile pushpad and the 4601 Series in 36 inch in narrow stile, both Grade 1. These drive top and bottom rods rather than a rim latchbolt like the Arrow 3880, which throws a 3/4 inch stainless steel latchbolt into a rim strike.
19) I have Arrow 3880 48-inch devices on my wide doors. What matches on the 36-inch doors in the same building?
For 36 inch openings with the same Grade 1 wide stile pushpad character, look at the TownSteel ED1100 and ED9700 heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile rim devices, the Corbin Russwin ED2200 Grade 1 wide stile exit only, the Detex 10 Advantex extra heavy duty wide stile device, the Dexter ED1000 Grade 1 rim device in 3FT, and the Von Duprin 22 non-handed Grade 1 wide stile pushpad. Dexter also lists the ED1000 in 4FT if you want the same brand across both widths.
20) Is the Detex 00 Series dummy device an alternative to the Arrow 3880?
No. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a super-heavy-duty dummy exit device with a wide stile design, meaning it provides the appearance and push surface without panic latching. The Arrow 3880 is a UL and CUL listed panic device that complies with NFPA 101 and is ADA compliant. If the inactive leaf needs matching appearance only, the 00 Series suits; if it is an egress door, it does not.
21) Is the Arrow 3880 heavy enough for a high traffic commercial entrance, and what is it made of?
It is a commercial grade device certified Grade 1 under ANSI/BHMA A156.3, which is the top cycle and strength tier for exit hardware. The chassis is non-ferrous alloy with a steel substrate device body, and the latchbolt is stainless steel. That combination is intended for main egress doors in schools, retail, and multi-family rather than light duty interior use.
