1) Will the Arrow 3880 fire rated rim exit device work on a wood fire door?
No. The fire rated 3880 rim device is not wood door compatible, so it should be specified for hollow metal openings. The F prefix fire listing on this device covers hollow metal doors up to 3 hour, A label and lesser. If you need a fire rated rim device on a wood door, look at something listed for wood, such as the Adams Rite 3700 Series narrow stile fire rated rim device, which is wood door compatible.
2) Why is this Arrow 3880 listed as less dogging, and can I get a version that holds the latch retracted?
Fire exit hardware cannot be dogged, which is why the fire rated 3880 ships without it. On the non-fire 3800 devices, Allen type dogging is standard and cylinder dogging is available with the CD prefix. If you need a door that pushes free during business hours, that has to be a non-fire opening.
3) Can I use the Arrow 3880 rim device on a pair of fire doors?
Only with a mullion. As fire exit hardware the 3880 is listed up to a 4 ft by 8 ft single door, or 8 ft by 8 ft pairs when an S21 mullion is used. A rim device latches into a strike, so on a pair without a mullion there is nothing to catch. If you cannot have a mullion in the opening, you need a vertical rod device instead.
4) Is the Arrow 3880 exit bar code compliant for a commercial egress door?
It is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, UL and CUL listed for panic, ADA compliant under ANSI A117.1 accessibility code, and complies with NFPA 101 life safety code. Only on a non-fire opening. The Von Duprin 22-3FT is a 36 inch wide stile pushpad rim device, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors, but it is listed as not fire rated. The Arrow 38-81 is a fire rated wide stile pushpad rim device. If the door is a labeled fire door, the 22-3FT is not an equivalent; a fire rated alternative such as the Dexter ED1000-R-F-EO is.
7) The Arrow 38-81 is not rated for wood doors - what rim device can I put on a wood door?
The Arrow 38-81 is listed as not wood door compatible. Both are narrow stile designs rather than wide stile pushpad.
8) Will the Arrow 3880 latch into my existing rim strike?
The 3880 uses a stainless steel latchbolt with a 3/4 inch throw, standard for rim panic hardware. If your existing strike was set for a rim device with the same throw and the device centerline lands in the same place, it will catch. On a fire door, the strike has to be a listed fire rim strike, so do not reuse a non-labeled strike on a rated opening.
9) How far does the Arrow 3880 push bar stick out from the door face?
Rail projection is 3-1/4 inches maximum. That matters where the door swings into a corridor with a tight clear width, or where a second door leaf or wall return could hit the bar. The 36 inch bar is sized for a 3 ft door leaf.
10) What mounting hardware comes with the Arrow 3880, and do I need thru bolts?
Wood and machine screws are supplied with the device. Thru bolts are available as an option and are the usual call on higher abuse openings or where the door skin will not hold a machine screw reliably. Note the fire rated 3880 is for metal doors, so the machine screws are the ones you will normally use.
11) Is there a non-fire rated version if the door is not on a rated wall?
Yes, the 3800 Series covers both; the F prefix denotes the fire exit hardware version. If the opening carries no label, a non-rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device works and gives you dogging.
