Arrow FS-38-81-G-10 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Arrow 3880 fire rated rim exit device work on a wood fire door?
No. The Arrow 3880 in the fire rated configuration is listed as fire exit hardware for hollow metal doors, UL and CUL listed for 3 hour A label and lesser doors, and the product data flags it as not wood door compatible. If you need a fire rated rim device on a wood door, look at a fire rated rim device listed for wood, such as the Adams Rite 3700 Series narrow stile rim device, which is fire rated and wood door compatible.
2) Can the Arrow 3880 be dogged down to hold the door in a push-to-open state during business hours?
Not in the less-dogging configuration. Standard 3800 devices use Allen key dogging, and cylinder dogging is available with the CD prefix, but fire rated exit hardware is supplied less dogging because a fire door has to latch at all times. If you want a dogged device for daytime free passage, it has to be on a non-fire opening.
3) How do I use a rim exit device on a pair of fire doors?
A rim device latches into a strike, so on a pair you need something for it to latch into. With the Arrow 3800, that is an S21 mullion between the leaves, rated up to 8 ft by 8 ft pairs. Without a mullion, you would need vertical rod hardware instead, either surface rod or a concealed vertical rod device like the Hager 4501 wide stile CVR.
4) Is the Arrow 3880 exit bar code compliant for an egress door in a school or hospital?
It carries ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, is UL and CUL listed for panic, complies with NFPA 101 life safety code, and fire rated versions comply with NFPA 80. It also meets ANSI A117.1 accessibility and is ADA compliant. That is the package an institutional egress spec normally asks for.
5) Can I add a lever or pull trim to the Arrow 3880, or is it exit only?
This configuration is exit only, meaning it is a push-to-exit bar with no outside trim: there is no key or lever access from the pull side. If the opening needs outside entry, you want a device set up to take trim, such as the Corbin Russwin ED5200 wide stile rim device, which is listed as exit only plus accepts trim.
6) The Arrow 3880 is handed. Is there a rim exit device that ships non-handed?
The Arrow 3880 must be ordered as LHRB or RHRB. If you would rather stock one part for either swing, the BEST Precision 5101 is a non-handed universal design rim device, the BEST 2401 is a narrow stile rim device that is exit only and non-handed, the CRL Jackson 1295 Series is a non-handed push pad rim panic device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Von Duprin 22-3FT is a non-handed wide stile pushpad device. None of those four carry a fire rating in their listed specs.
7) I have a narrow stile aluminum storefront door. Can I use the Arrow 3880?
The Arrow 3880 is a wide stile pushpad device. For narrow stile leaves, the Adams Rite 8800 Series 30 inch narrow stile rim device covers 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED4200 is a Grade 1 36 inch narrow stile rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Falcon 19-R is a Grade 1 36 inch narrow stile rim device in exit only function. If the narrow stile door is also fire rated, the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch device is the fire rated narrow stile option.
8) Is a Cal-Royal 5000 or A9800 a direct substitute for the Arrow 3880 on a fire door?
No. The Arrow 3880 is fire rated and BHMA Grade 1 certified. The Cal-Royal 5000 36 inch touch bar rim device and the Cal-Royal A9800 36 inch exit only rim device are both listed as Grade 2 and not fire rated, so neither belongs on a labeled opening. For a rated door, look at the Marks USA M9900F 36 inch fire rated rim device or the Orca OED85 Series 36 inch fire rated rim device.
9) The Arrow 3880 is exit only. What comparable rim device gives me outside key access instead?
The 3880 in this configuration is exit only with no outside trim. For key retraction from the outside, the Sargent 8504 is a Grade 1 narrow stile rim device in night latch function, and the Detex V4003A/03AN is a Grade 1 wide stile rim device with night latch trim. The Corbin Russwin ED5200 Grade 1 36 inch wide stile device and the ED4200 Grade 1 narrow stile device are listed as exit only and accepting trim if you prefer to add the trim separately.
10) Will a Dexter ED1000 work where the Arrow 3880 is specified on a fire door?
Only the rated version. The Dexter ED1000 Series is offered as a Grade 1 fire rated rim exit device, and that is the one to use on a labeled opening; the ED1000-R-EO 3FT and 4FT devices are Grade 1 but not fire rated. All are for metal rather than wood doors, matching the Arrow 3880, which is specified for 1-3/4 inch metal doors.
11) Will the Arrow 3880 latch into the strike already on my frame?
The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4 inch throw, and it is a rim device, so it latches into a surface-mounted rim strike on the frame stop, not a mortised ANSI strike. If the opening currently has a mortise lock or a vertical rod device, plan on a new rim strike and the corresponding frame prep.
12) How far does the Arrow 3880 push bar stick out from the door face?
Rail projection is 3-1/4 inches maximum. That matters where the door swings into a corridor with a clearance requirement, or where a second leaf, wall, or mullion sits close to the bar in the open position.
13) If the opening is not a fire door, what non-rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device compares to the Arrow 3880?
The Arrow 3880 is a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad rim device with a fire rating. For a non-rated opening, the Von Duprin 22-3FT is a Grade 1, 36 inch wide stile pushpad rim device for 1-3/4 inch doors, the Corbin Russwin ED2200 is a Grade 1 36 inch wide stile rim device in exit only function, and the TownSteel ED1100 is a Grade 1 heavy duty 36 inch wide stile rim device.
14) The Arrow 3880 is less dogging. Which comparable devices list dogging?
The 3880 configuration here is supplied exit only without dogging, though the series offers Allen type dogging and a CD cylinder dogging prefix. Among comparable rim devices, the Design Hardware 1000R at 33 inches is a heavy duty rim device with hex key dogging, the Design Hardware 2000R at 33 inches is a standard duty wide stile rim device with hex key dogging, and the Stanley QED200 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty narrow stile rim device with hex key dogging. Those three are not fire rated in their listed specs, and dogging is not permitted on a labeled fire door.
15) Is the SDC MSB550 switch bar an alternative to the Arrow 3880 rim exit device?
No, they do different jobs. The Arrow 3880 is a mechanical Grade 1 rim exit device with a stainless steel latchbolt and 3/4 inch throw that latches the door. The SDC MSB550 Series 36 inch unit is a mechanical switch bar that releases an electromagnetic lock, and the SDC PSB560 Series 36 inch SureExit is a pressure sense bar; both are offered for narrow or wide stile doors and neither is fire rated. Use those only where a separate locking device holds the door.
16) What should I use instead of the Arrow 3880 if the door needs top and bottom latching rather than a rim strike?
The Arrow 3880 is a rim device that latches to a strike on the frame stop. Where the drawing calls for vertical rod latching, the Hager 4501 Series 36 inch device is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod exit device with a wide stile pushpad and the Hager 4601 Series 36 inch device is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod narrow stile device. Neither Hager device is fire rated in its listed specs.
17) Which fire rated alternative to the Arrow 3880 has electrified request to exit built in?
The Arrow 3880 is a mechanical Grade 1 fire rated rim device. If the opening needs monitoring and electric latch retraction, the Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device with RX and MELR. For non-rated electrified openings, the SDC S6136 Spectra is an electrified architectural rim device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors.
18) Is the Detex 00 Series a substitute for the Arrow 3880?
No. The Detex Advantex 00 Series is a super heavy duty dummy exit device with a wide stile design, meaning it has no latching function and is used for appearance or for the inactive leaf. The Arrow 3880 is a Grade 1 fire rated rim device with a stainless steel latchbolt at 3/4 inch throw. If you want a Detex latching device in wide stile, the Detex 10 Advantex Series 36 inch is an extra heavy duty Grade 1 wide stile rim device, though it is not fire rated.
19) What finishes does the Arrow 3880 rim exit bar come in?
Seven orderable finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed dark oxidized satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized bronze equivalent, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. If you are matching existing openings across a building, 630 satin stainless is the usual commercial standard.
20) What are the Arrow 3880 chassis and rail actually made of?
Chassis is a non-ferrous alloy with a cover of cold drawn brass, bronze, or stainless steel depending on finish, and the rail is roll-formed brass, bronze, or stainless. The latchbolt is stainless steel. It is built as commercial hardware, not residential.
