Arrow FS-38-81-E-10 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I have to specify hand when ordering the Arrow 3880 rim exit device?
Yes. The 3880 is handed, so you specify LHRB or RHRB (left or right hand reverse bevel) with the order. Get it wrong and the device will not mount correctly. If you stock devices for a mixed set of openings and would rather carry one part, a non-handed wide stile rim device such as the Von Duprin 22 Series or the CRL Jackson 1295 push pad device avoids the handing call, though neither is fire rated.
2) How big a door will the fire rated Arrow 3880 cover, and can I use it on a pair?
As fire exit hardware, the Arrow 3800 devices are listed up to a 4 ft by 8 ft single door, and up to 8 ft by 8 ft on pairs when you use an S21 mullion. A rim device latches into a strike, so on a pair you need that mullion to give it something to latch to. The 48 inch device covers door widths up to the 4 ft single leaf limit.
3) Why does the Arrow 3880 say less dogging, and can I still get hold-open?
The fire rated version ships without dogging because mechanical dogging is not permitted on a fire door, the latch has to project at all times. On the non-fire 3800 devices, Allen key dogging is standard and cylinder dogging is available with the CD prefix. If you need a push bar you can hold retracted for daytime traffic, you need a non-fire opening and a device ordered with dogging.
4) Does the Arrow 3880 meet code for an accessible egress opening in a commercial building?
It is ADA compliant and meets ANSI A117.1 Accessibility Code. It is also ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 certified, UL and CUL listed for the panic (accident hazard) standard, complies with NFPA 101 life safety code, and as a fire rated device complies with NFPA 80.
5) I need a fire rated 48 inch rim exit device, what else is there besides the Arrow 3880?
For a 48 inch fire rated rim device on a metal door, the Marks USA M9900F 48 inch is the direct equivalent, exit only with a panic protector end cap. In 36 inch, the Marks M9900F-36, the Orca OED85 Series and the Dexter ED1000-R-F fire rated rim device are all fire rated options. Most of the other wide stile rim devices out there, including the Corbin Russwin ED5200 and the Von Duprin 22, are not fire rated and will not pass on a labeled opening.
6) What is the closest fire rated 48 inch rim exit device to the Arrow F3880 if I need a different brand on the same opening?
The Marks USA M9900F 48 inch rim panic exit device is the closest match in another brand. Like the Arrow 3880 Series fire rated 48 inch bar, it is a fire rated rim device in a 48 inch size, exit only, and it is not rated for wood doors. The Marks unit carries a panic protector end cap. The Arrow is handed, specified LHRB or RHRB, and uses a wide stile pushpad.
7) I need a fire rated rim exit device but the door is only 36 inches wide - what should I use instead of the 48 inch Arrow?
For a 36 inch leaf, look at the Marks USA M9900F 36 inch fire rated rim exit device or the Orca Hardware OED85 Series 36 inch fire rated rim exit device. Both are fire rated, exit only, and not rated for wood doors, the same as the Arrow 3880 fire rated bar, but they are built for a 36 inch opening rather than the 48 inch the Arrow covers.
8) My opening is a 48 inch door that is not fire rated - is there a non-fire version I can order instead of the Arrow F3880?
Yes. On a non-rated 48 inch opening the Dormakaba 9300 Series 48 inch wide stile rim exit device, exit only, is a Grade 1 heavy duty option, and the Corbin Russwin ED3200 is a Grade 1 48 inch crossbar rim device. The Cal-Royal 5500 is a 48 inch wide rim device with a push bar. All three are listed as non fire rated, so they are not interchangeable with the Arrow 3880 fire rated bar on a labeled door.
9) Can I put the Arrow 3880 fire rated rim device on an aluminum storefront door, or do I need a narrow stile device?
The Arrow 3880 fire rated bar uses a wide stile pushpad and mounts on wood or metal doors at 1-3/4 inch thickness, so a narrow aluminum stile is the wrong application. For narrow stile openings, the Adams Rite 3700 Series 30 inch is a Grade 1 fire rated narrow stile rim device, and the Detex 40 Advantex is a Grade 1 extra heavy duty narrow stile rim device. Among narrow stile options, the Adams Rite 3700 is the one carrying a fire rating.
10) Will the Arrow 3880 latch into the strike I already have on the frame?
The latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4 inch throw, which is the standard rim device throw, so it mates with a standard rim strike. The rail projects 3-1/4 inches maximum off the door face, which is what to check against door swing clearance and any adjacent wall or return.
11) What comes in the box with the Arrow 3880 exit bar, and what do I need to order separately?
Mounting hardware is included: wood and machine screws come with the device, and thru bolts are available as an option. The 3880 is exit only, so there is no outside trim, if you need a lever or pull on the pull side that is a separate trim order. A pair of doors also needs the S21 mullion.
12) Wide stile pushpad or narrow stile, which exit device do I need?
The Arrow 3880 is a wide stile pushpad device, which suits hollow metal and standard commercial doors with a full-width stile. Aluminum storefront doors with a narrow vertical stile will not take it, for those you want a narrow stile rim device such as the Adams Rite 8800 Series, the Falcon 19-R, or the TownSteel ED3700. Note that of those, only the Adams Rite 3700 Series carries a fire rating.
13) Is the Arrow 3880 heavy duty enough for a high traffic school or hospital exit?
It is a commercial Grade 1 device under ANSI/BHMA A156.3, which is the top duty classification for exit devices, with a non-ferrous alloy chassis and a stainless steel latchbolt. For standardizing a facility, the 3800 line runs fire rated and non-fire versions with the same pushpad and the same finish range, so labeled and unlabeled openings can look alike.
14) For a 48 inch opening, how does the Sargent 2828 compare with the Arrow 3880?
The Sargent 2828 is a Grade 1 reversible wide stile rim exit device for a 48 inch minimum door width, exit only, and not wood door compatible. The Arrow 3880 is also Grade 1, wide stile pushpad, exit only, at 48 inches, and it is fire rated and handed LHRB or RHRB. The main practical difference is the Sargent is reversible in the field while the Arrow is ordered to hand.
15) What is a Grade 1 fire rated alternative to the Arrow 3880 if I want to standardize on one series across a building?
The Dexter ED1000 Series fire rated rim exit device is Grade 1 and fire rated, and the same ED1000 series is also offered in non-rated 3FT and 4FT exit only versions, so you can carry one series across both labeled and unlabeled openings. The Arrow 3880 fire rated bar is likewise ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and UL and CUL listed. Neither is rated for wood doors.
16) Is the Sargent 12-8810 fire rated exit device an equivalent to the Arrow 3880?
It looks similar on paper but it is not a functional equivalent. The Sargent 12-8810-LTRIM is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile rim device, but its function is listed as dummy and it includes RX and MELR electrified options. The Arrow 3880 covered here is a mechanical exit only device, less dogging, with a 3/4 inch stainless steel latchbolt throw. If you need an active latching exit only bar, the Sargent dummy unit will not latch the opening.
17) I need an electrified exit bar tied into access control rather than the mechanical Arrow 3880 - what are the options?
The Arrow 3880 is a mechanical fire rated rim bar with allen type dogging standard. For access control tie-in, the SDC S6136 Spectra S6000 Series is a 36 inch electrified architectural rim exit device with a 4 inch wide stile for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, the SDC MSB550 is a 36 inch mechanical switch bar with electromagnetic lock release, and the Securitron EMB is an electromechanical exit bar for 2-1/4 inch doors. Those SDC units are listed as non fire rated.
18) Does the Arrow 3880 handle a pair of doors, or do I need a different device?
The Arrow 3880 fire exit hardware is listed for up to a 4 foot by 8 foot single door, and for 8 foot by 8 foot pairs when used with an S21 mullion. If you want vertical rod hardware on a pair instead of a rim device with a mullion, the Hager 4501 Series 36 inch is a Grade 1 concealed vertical rod device with a wide stile pushpad, and the Hager 4601 is the narrow stile concealed vertical rod version. Both Hager units are listed as non fire rated.
19) What finishes does the Arrow 3880 rim exit bar come in?
Seven finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed dark oxidized satin bronze, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze equivalent, 629 bright stainless, and 630 satin stainless. The chassis cover and rail are cold drawn or roll formed brass, bronze or stainless depending on which finish family you pick, so a brass finish gets a brass rail. For matching across a building, 630 satin stainless is the usual commercial standard.
