Arrow FS1150E AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What stile width do I need for an Arrow S1150 exit device?
Single doors need a minimum 3-3/4 inch stile. On a pair of doors the minimum drops to 3-1/2 inches. Measure the flat face of the stile before ordering; anything narrower than that and the chassis won't land properly.
2) Can the Arrow S1150 go on a fire rated opening?
Yes, with the F prefix on the part number. Fire exit hardware on hollow metal doors is UL and CUL listed for 3 hour, A label and lesser doors. On wood doors the listing runs up to 1-1/2 hour, B label. The device also complies with NFPA 80 for fire doors and NFPA 101 life safety.
3) Will the Arrow S1150 latch a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes. A surface vertical rod device latches into a strike at the head and into the threshold or floor strike at the bottom, so it secures each leaf independently and a pair needs no center mullion. Top bolt throw is 1/2 inch, bottom is 3/4 inch, so both strikes have to be prepped and aligned. If you'd rather use a rim device on a pair, that's when a removable mullion becomes necessary.
4) What does "exit device only, less trim" mean, and what else do I need to order?
Exit only means the S1150 pushes open from the inside and has no outside operating trim, so the door is not openable from the exterior. If you need outside entry you must specify a lever or pull trim as a separate item, along with cylinder dogging if you want it keyed. Top and bottom strikes need to be in place as well.
5) Is the Arrow S1150 Grade 1 and ADA compliant?
Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and BHMA certified, and it meets ANSI A117.1 accessibility requirements. UL and CUL listed for the panic (accident hazard) standard. That combination is what an institutional or MRO spec normally calls for on an egress door.
6) I need a vertical rod device that accepts outside trim - what are my options versus the Arrow S1150 less trim?
The Arrow S1150 is an exit only device supplied less trim. If the opening needs outside operating trim, the Corbin Russwin ED4400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile surface vertical rod device listed as exit only, accepts trim, the ED5400 is the wide stile equivalent in that family, and the ED7400 is a narrow stile crossbar device that accepts operator trim. All three are for 1-3/4 inch doors, the same thickness the Arrow S1150 is built for.
7) Is the Sargent 12-8710 a substitute for the Arrow S1150 exit device?
No. The Sargent 12-8710 is a fire rated Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device with a dummy function, meaning it does not latch or release as an operating exit device. The Arrow S1150 is an exit only device with a 1/2 inch top bolt throw and 3/4 inch bottom bolt throw. For a working egress opening, a Sargent 2727 or 3727, both Grade 1 exit only fire rated wide stile devices, is the closer match.
8) Which alternatives to the Arrow S1150 are confirmed for wood doors?
The TownSteel EF9727, ED3727 and ED8927 are all listed as wood door compatible, with the EF9727 fire rated and Grade 1 certified. By contrast the Von Duprin 7527-3ft and 7827-3ft are listed as not wood door compatible. The Arrow S1150 is built for 1-3/4 inch thick wood or hollow metal doors and is listed for wood doors up to 1-1/2 hour B label.
9) Does a fire rated exit device like this still have dogging?
The S1150 comes with Allen-type key dogging as standard, with a cylinder dogging option available. Note that dogging is not permitted on a fire rated opening, so on an F prefix fire door the mechanism has to stay latched, and the dogging feature is only usable on non-rated panic applications.
10) Do I have to order the Arrow S1150 handed?
No. The S1150 is reversible, so one device covers left and right hand openings. That makes it easier to keep a single part on the shelf for a building with doors swinging both ways.
11) The 30 inch Arrow S1150 rail, what door widths does it cover?
The rail is furnished standard for doors up to 36 inches and can be cut down for 32 inch doors. Alternate rail sizes are offered for narrow or wide doors outside that range. Door height on the spec is 90 inches.
12) Can I avoid a bottom rod on this kind of device?
The Arrow S1150 is supplied as a full top and bottom rod device, with a 1/2 inch top bolt throw and 3/4 inch bottom. If the bottom rod is a maintenance problem, for instance on a door over a dirty or uneven floor, a less bottom rod device is the fix; the Orca Hardware OED56 Series 36 inch is catalogued less bottom rod and non-handed, though it is not fire rated.
13) How does the Falcon 25-V-EO compare with the Arrow S1150 vertical rod device?
The Falcon 25-V-EO is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod exit device in a 3 ft size, exit only, for 1-3/4 inch doors, and it is not fire rated. The Falcon 24-V-EO is the narrow stile Grade 1 exit only device in the same 36 inch length. The Arrow S1150 is also exit only for 1-3/4 inch doors and is fire rated, UL and CUL listed for fire exit hardware use on hollow metal doors up to 3 hour A label and on wood doors up to 1-1/2 hour B label.
14) Is there a Grade 2 vertical rod exit device instead of the Grade 1 Arrow S1150?
Yes. The Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device and the TownSteel TS5100 Series is a heavy duty Grade 2 wide stile surface vertical rod device in a 36 inch by 84 inch size; neither is fire rated. The Arrow S1150 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1 and is fire rated, which is what a labeled door or a Grade 1 specification calls for.
15) Which vertical rod exit devices are reversible like the Arrow S1150?
The Arrow S1150 is reversible, so one device handles either hand. Among comparable surface vertical rod devices, the BEST Precision 5201 Series 36 inch is listed as reversible, the Sargent 2727 is a reversible Grade 1 fire rated wide stile device, and the Von Duprin 2227-3FT and the Orca OED56 Series 36 inch are non-handed.
16) Are there shorter-length vertical rod devices than the 36 inch models, closer to the Arrow S1150 30 inch?
The Design Hardware 1000V heavy duty and 2000V standard duty surface vertical rod devices are offered in a 33 inch size, and the Adams Rite 3100, 8100 and 8200 Series come in 30 inch. The Arrow S1150 30 inch rail is furnished standard for doors up to 36 inches and can be cut down for 32 inch doors, with alternate rail sizes available for narrow or wide doors.
17) What finishes does the Arrow S1150 30 inch device come in?
Three painted finishes: aluminum, dark bronze, and light bronze. All three are offered in the 30 inch size, so matching existing bronze or aluminum storefront hardware across a building is straightforward.
18) What is the Arrow S1150 made of, and will it hold up on a high traffic door?
Chassis and cover are non-ferrous alloy with metal end caps, the rail assembly is steel, and the top and bottom bolts are brass. It is a commercial Grade 1 device, which is the heaviest ANSI duty class for exit hardware and the right choice for school, retail, or multi-family egress doors.
