1) What is the minimum stile width for the Arrow S1150 exit device?
3-3/4 inches on a single door, and 3-1/2 inches on a pair. Measure the lock stile face before ordering; anything narrower than that and the chassis won't land properly on the door.
2) Does the 30 inch Arrow S1150 rail work on a 36 inch door?
Yes. The S1150 rail is furnished standard for doors up to 36 inches and can be cut down in the field to suit a 32 inch door. Alternate rail sizes are offered for narrower or wider leaves outside that range.
3) Can I use the Arrow S1150 on a fire rated opening?
Not as supplied. The standard S1150 is not fire rated; it is UL and CUL listed for the accident hazard (panic) standard only. Fire exit hardware in this family carries an F prefix before the part number, listed to 3 hour A label on hollow metal and up to 1-1/2 hour B label on wood doors. If the opening is a rated one, order the F prefix version instead.
4) Will the Arrow S1150 secure a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes. Being a surface vertical rod device, it latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into the jamb, so a pair of doors can be secured with no center mullion. Top bolt throw is 1/2 inch and the bottom bolt throws 3/4 inch, so confirm your head strike and floor strike suit those. Minimum stile on a pair is 3-1/2 inches.
5) Does the Arrow S1150 come with outside trim or a lever?
No trim is included. It is an exit only device, less trim, so the outside face has no lever or pull and the door is not openable from the outside without adding separate hardware. If you need outside access, spec a device family that accepts operator trim, such as the Corbin Russwin ED5400 or ED7400.
6) I need a fire rated surface vertical rod device instead of the Arrow S1150 - what are my options?
The Arrow S1150 as supplied is non-fire-rated. For a labeled opening, the Adams Rite 3100 Series 30 inch device is fire-rated for 1-3/4 inch doors at Grade 1, and the TownSteel EF9727 in the 9700 Series is a fire-rated Grade 1 heavy duty wide stile device at 36 by 84 inches that is listed wood door compatible. The Sargent 2727 is also a Grade 1 fire rated exit only wide stile device.
7) The stile on my aluminum door is too narrow for the Arrow S1150 - what narrow stile vertical rod device should I use?
The Arrow S1150 needs a 3-3/4 inch minimum stile on single doors. For tighter stiles, narrow stile surface vertical rod devices include the Adams Rite 8200 Series at 30 inches, the Von Duprin 3327A grooved case and 7527 devices, the Corbin Russwin ED4400, the Falcon 19-V-EO, and the TownSteel ED3727. All are catalogued as narrow stile; the Von Duprin 7527 is listed as not wood door compatible, while the TownSteel ED3727 is wood door compatible.
8) The Arrow S1150 is less trim - which vertical rod devices accept an outside operating trim?
The Arrow S1150 is an exit only device furnished less trim. If the opening needs outside operation, the Corbin Russwin ED4400 narrow stile and ED5400 wide stile devices are catalogued as exit only, accepts trim, and the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a narrow stile crossbar device that accepts operator trim. All three are Grade 1 for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) Which surface vertical rod devices look like the Arrow S1150 but will not actually work as a substitute?
Two to watch. The Sargent 12-8710 is catalogued as a dummy function device, so it does not latch or provide egress the way the Arrow S1150 exit only panic device does. The Orca Hardware OED56 at 36 inches is furnished less bottom rod, so it does not give you the two point top and bottom bolt arrangement of the S1150, which throws 1/2 inch at the top and 3/4 inch at the bottom. The Arrow S1150 mounts on 1-3/4 inch thick wood or hollow metal doors.
