Arrow S1150F AL – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the minimum stile width for the Arrow S1150 exit device?
3-3/4 inches of stile on a single door, and 3-1/2 inches on double doors. If your aluminum storefront leaf is narrower than that, this device will not land on the rail, and you should look at a true narrow stile device such as the Von Duprin 3327A or the Corbin Russwin ED4400.
2) Is the Arrow S1150 exit device fire rated?
As ordered, no. The S1150 is a panic device, UL and CUL listed for the accident hazard (panic) standard, not a fire exit device. Arrow's fire exit version is ordered with an F prefix on the part number, and that version is listed for 3 hour A label hollow metal and lesser doors, and up to 1-1/2 hour B label wood doors. If you need a fire rated device off the shelf, the Adams Rite 3100 Series and TownSteel EF9727 are both listed fire rated in this same surface vertical rod format.
3) Does the Arrow S1150 come with outside trim or a lever?
No trim is included. This is an exit only device, meaning it releases from the inside push rail and there is no outside operating trim. Use it on doors that only need egress, or on a pair where a separate active leaf carries the lock. If you need outside lever or pull operation, choose a device built to accept trim, such as the Corbin Russwin ED5400 or ED7400.
4) Can I use the Arrow S1150 on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
Yes. A surface vertical rod device latches into the head frame and the threshold rather than a strike on a mullion, so a pair of S1150 devices secures double doors with a clear opening between them. On doubles the minimum stile is 3-1/2 inches per leaf.
5) Is the Arrow S1150 Grade 1 and does it meet ADA and life safety requirements?
Yes on all three. The S1150 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1, meets ANSI A117.1 accessibility requirements, and complies with NFPA 101 life safety code. It is UL and CUL listed for the panic standard and BHMA certified, which is normally what a school, hospital, or government spec is asking for.
6) The Arrow S1150 is not fire rated - what surface vertical rod device should I use on a fire rated opening instead?
The Arrow S1150 as configured carries no fire rating. For a fire rated opening, the TownSteel 9700 Series EF9727 in 36 by 84 inch is a Grade 1 fire rated heavy duty surface vertical rod device that is wood door compatible, and the Adams Rite 3100 Series in 30 inch is a Grade 1 fire rated surface vertical rod device for 1-3/4 inch wide stile doors. Sargent's 2727 is also a Grade 1 fire rated exit only surface vertical rod device on a wide stile.
7) My aluminum storefront door has a narrow stile - is the Arrow S1150 right, or should I look at something else?
The Arrow S1150 needs a 3-3/4 inch minimum stile on single doors and is offered in narrow or wide stile rail sizes. If your stile is tighter than that, purpose-built narrow stile devices include the Von Duprin 3327A in 3 ft, a Grade 1 grooved case narrow stile surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors, the Falcon 19-V-EO in 36 inch, Grade 1 narrow stile exit only, and the Corbin Russwin ED4400, a Grade 1 narrow stile surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors.
8) The Arrow S1150 is less trim - what should I order if I need a device that takes outside lever or operator trim?
The Arrow S1150 is an exit only device supplied less trim, so there is no outside operating trim function. If the opening needs outside access, the Corbin Russwin ED5400 is a Grade 1 wide stile surface vertical rod device for 36 inch doors that is exit only and accepts trim, the ED4400 is the narrow stile version that also accepts trim, and the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device that accepts operator trim.
9) Can I substitute the Orca OED56 for the Arrow S1150 on a pair of doors?
Check the rod configuration before you do. The Arrow S1150 is a full surface vertical rod device with brass top and bottom bolts, 1/2 inch throw top and 3/4 inch throw bottom. The Orca Hardware OED56 in 36 inch is supplied less bottom rod, so it latches only at the head. On a pair where the inactive leaf needs to be held top and bottom, those are not interchangeable.
10) Is the Sargent 12-8710 a substitute for the Arrow S1150 exit device?
No. The Arrow S1150 is an exit only panic device with functioning top and bottom bolts. The Sargent 12-8710 is a dummy function wide stile surface vertical rod device in the 8700 Series - it has the appearance of the device but no latching function, so it is used on an inactive leaf, not as an egress device. For a working Sargent equivalent, the 3727 is a Grade 1 exit only wide stile surface vertical rod device.
11) Will the 36 inch Arrow S1150 work on a 32 inch door?
Yes. The rail furnished standard covers doors up to 36 inches and can be cut down in the field for doors as narrow as 32 inches. Below that, or for unusually wide doors, Arrow offers alternate rail sizes.
12) Do I need to order the Arrow S1150 handed?
No. The S1150 is reversible, so one device covers left or right hand openings. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares across a building instead of carrying both hands.
13) How do I hold the Arrow S1150 doors unlatched during business hours?
Dogging is standard with an Allen (hex) key, which retracts the pushbar and holds the bolts clear for push-pull traffic. A cylinder dogging option is available if you would rather control it with a key than a hex wrench. Note that dogging is not permitted on fire rated openings.
14) What are the top and bottom bolt throws on the Arrow S1150, and will they catch my existing strikes?
The bolts are brass, with a 1/2 inch (12.7mm) throw at the top and 3/4 inch (19.05mm) at the bottom. If you are replacing another surface vertical rod device, measure the existing head strike pocket and floor strike depth against those figures, since a shallower throw at the head is the usual reason a swapped device fails to latch.
15) What door height does the Arrow S1150 vertical rod device cover?
The standard rod set covers a 90 inch door height. Taller openings need a longer rod, so confirm your leaf height before ordering.
16) What is the difference between a surface vertical rod device like the Arrow S1150 and a rim device with a mullion?
The S1150 latches top and bottom through exposed rods on the door face, so a pair of doors can swing free with nothing between them, which matters when you move carts, furniture, or stretchers through. A rim device needs a removable mullion between the leaves to strike against. The tradeoff is maintenance: surface rods and the floor strike are exposed and need occasional adjustment, while a rim device has a single latch point. If you want to eliminate the bottom rod and the floor strike entirely, a less bottom rod device such as the Orca Hardware OED56 is the alternative.
17) Can the Arrow S1150 be used on both narrow and wide stile doors?
It covers both, within limits. The S1150 is catalogued for narrow or wide stile applications, but the governing number is the 3-3/4 inch minimum stile on a single door. Many aluminum storefront leaves come in under that, so measure the stile rather than relying on the narrow stile label.
18) Is there a lighter duty or Grade 2 alternative to the Arrow S1150 for a low traffic door?
The Arrow S1150 is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.3 Grade 1. If a lower certification level suits the opening, the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device, and the TownSteel TS5100 Series in 36 by 84 inch is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile surface vertical rod device. The Design Hardware 2000V in 33 inch is offered as a standard duty surface vertical rod device.
19) I need a reversible surface vertical rod device like the Arrow S1150 - which other models are non-handed?
The Arrow S1150 rail is reversible, so one device covers either hand. Other non-handed choices are the BEST Precision 5201 Series in 36 inch, listed as reversible, the Von Duprin 2227-3FT, a Grade 1 wide stile device for 36 inch doors described as non-handed, and the Orca Hardware OED56 in 36 inch, a non-handed exit only device for 1-3/4 inch doors.
20) The Arrow S1150 fits wood or hollow metal doors - which alternatives are limited to metal doors only?
The Arrow S1150 is rated for 1-3/4 inch thick wood or hollow metal doors. Among comparable Grade 1 devices, the Von Duprin 7527-3ft and 7827-3ft are both listed as not wood door compatible. If the opening is a wood door, the TownSteel ED8927 in 36 by 84 inch and the TownSteel ED3727 narrow stile are both Grade 1 and listed as wood door compatible.
21) I need a surface vertical rod device for a door narrower than 36 inches - does the Arrow S1150 work or is there a shorter option?
The Arrow S1150 36 inch rail is furnished for doors up to 36 inches and can be cut down to fit 32 inch doors, so a single device covers that range. If you would rather order a shorter device as supplied, the Adams Rite 8100 Series and 8200 Series come in 30 inch, both Grade 1, and the Design Hardware 1000V and 2000V come in 33 inch.
22) What finishes does the Arrow S1150 exit device come in?
Three painted finishes at 36 inches: aluminum, dark bronze, and light bronze. If you are matching existing devices across a building, those painted finishes read as the common storefront aluminum and bronze tones rather than a plated brass or satin chrome.
23) What is the Arrow S1150 made of, and is it suitable for high traffic commercial use?
The chassis and cover are non-ferrous alloy with metal end caps, and the rail assembly is steel. It is a commercial device carrying Grade 1 certification, which is the highest ANSI/BHMA durability tier for exit hardware, so it is appropriate for a main entry or stairwell with heavy daily traffic.
24) Which alternatives to the Arrow S1150 offer hex key dogging?
The Arrow S1150 comes standard with Allen-type key dogging, with a cylinder dogging option available. Among comparable devices, the Von Duprin 7827-3ft is a 3 ft Grade 1 surface vertical rod device specified with hex key dogging for 1-3/4 inch doors, which is the same dogging approach.
