At a Glance
- Falcon SC Series (SC60/SC70/SC80) covers light-to-medium commercial surface closers at a value tier under the Allegion umbrella — same parent as LCN.
- LCN 4040XP is the spec-crown heavy-duty surface closer for high-abuse openings. Grade 1 per A156.4 (2,000,000 cycles minimum).
- LCN 1460 is the mid-tier cast-iron workhorse — a direct step-up from medium-duty Falcon on institutional corridors.
- Falcon pairs cleanly with Falcon exit devices and locks for a single-source Allegion opening at a lower list than Von Duprin/LCN specs.
- Both brands meet ADA §404.2.9 opening-force limits (5 lbf interior) when sized and adjusted correctly.
What Falcon door closer series are available and how do they differ?
Falcon's current commercial surface line is the SC Series — SC60 light to medium duty, SC70 heavy duty, and SC80 medium duty, with aluminum alloy bodies, adjustable spring sizing, and standard/parallel/track arm configurations. Falcon is an Allegion brand, which puts it in the same family as LCN — but priced as the value option rather than the spec-crown.
Our catalog depth for Falcon-branded closers is thin — if you're specifying a project, we route most heavy surface-closer work to LCN (Grade 1, 10-million-cycle tested life on the 4040XP) and to dormakaba on the mid tier. See the full surface mounted door closers inventory for what ships now.
Is a Falcon SC60 or SC80 better for high-traffic commercial doors?
Neither is ideal for high-traffic heavy-duty applications. The SC60 is a light-to-medium-duty closer targeted at interior offices and low-to-moderate-cycle openings. The SC80 is medium duty — suitable for standard commercial interiors but not for high-abuse or exterior entrances. For a corridor, classroom, or any opening seeing meaningful daily use that demands heavy-duty performance, the SC70 is the heavy-duty Falcon pick.
If the opening is truly high-abuse — exterior entrances, hospital corridors, stairwell doors with wind load — step up to a true Grade 1 heavy-duty like the LCN 4040XP. Shop the full heavy duty door closers category for sized options.
How do you choose between light, medium, and heavy duty?
Duty rating is a function of door width, weight, cycle count, and environmental load (wind, HVAC pressure). Match the closer to the worst-case condition at the opening, not the average.
- Light to medium duty — interior residential-grade or low-to-moderate-cycle private office or light commercial. SC60 territory. See light duty closers.
- Medium duty — standard commercial interior, light retail, moderate cycle. SC80 or LCN 1461. See medium duty closers.
- Heavy duty — exterior, high-cycle institutional, fire-rated egress. SC70, LCN 4040XP, or LCN 4111 for parallel arm.
What's the difference between regular arm, parallel arm, and slide track?
Arm type is dictated by mounting location, aesthetics, and whether the closer sits on the push or pull side of the door.
Regular arm mounts pull-side with the arm projecting out — maximum efficiency, strongest closing force per spring size, but the arm is visible and exposed. Parallel arm mounts push-side with the arm running parallel to the door face; cleaner look, protected from abuse, roughly 25–35% less efficient than regular arm (size up the spring). Slide track replaces the scissor arm with a track channel — the most tamper-resistant and highest-end aesthetic, common on institutional and detention openings.
Browse parallel arm closers and slide track arm closers for sized options.

Which Falcon models work for ADA and fire doors?
All current commercial Falcon SC closers are adjustable for ADA §404.2.9 — 5 lbf maximum opening force on interior doors. Fire-rated doors are exempt from the 5 lbf limit (they must close and latch), but still require a labeled closer. Exterior doors have no ADA opening-force maximum.
For fire-rated assemblies, use a hold-open ONLY if it's electromagnetic with fire alarm release — NFPA 80 prohibits mechanical hold-open on fire-rated doors. For delayed-action closing on accessibility retrofits (gives wheelchair users extra time to clear the opening), see delayed action closers. For fire alarm-released electromagnetic hold-open closers, the LCN 4040SE Sentronic is the direct-replacement option under fire and life safety closers.
Are Falcon door closers ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 certified?
The SC70 is published as Grade 1 under A156.4. That means it meets the 2,000,000 cycles minimum per A156.4 Grade 1 — the same threshold LCN's 4040XP, Norton's 7500, and dormakaba's TS93 are tested to. Grade is a floor, not a ceiling: tested life (what manufacturers market as "10M cycles") differentiates within the grade. On an exterior entrance with 500+ cycles/day, that gap matters.
SC80 is medium duty and may also carry Grade 1 depending on configuration; SC60 is Grade 2 or 3 depending on configuration. Always verify the specific function number against the Falcon catalog cut sheet before specifying.
How does Falcon compare to LCN, Norton Rixson, and dormakaba?
Falcon is the Allegion value brand — same parent as LCN but priced for budget-conscious retrofits and spec-match jobs where the architect wrote "or equal." It performs where the SC70 (heavy duty) and SC80 (medium duty) are specified correctly, and the parts commonality with LCN tooling helps field techs.
LCN is the spec-crown for high-traffic and institutional openings. The 4040XP is the default Grade 1 heavy-duty closer in school, hospital, and government specs. The 1460 series covers mid-tier cast-iron work. Pricing runs higher than Falcon but the install life and tested cycle life justify it on abuse-prone openings.
Norton Rixson (Assa Abloy) competes head-to-head with LCN on heavy-duty surface and overhead-concealed. We stock Norton Rixson closers — the Norton Rixson 7500 and Norton Rixson 8501 are available options alongside LCN for heavy-duty surface closer work. dormakaba TS Series — specifically the cam-action TS9356 — competes on the slide-track and low-energy opening-force end, strong for ADA-sensitive openings. The dormakaba 7414 covers standard-duty surface work.
Choose Falcon when:
- The spec reads "Falcon SC Series or equal" and you need a direct-brand match
- Budget is tight on an interior commercial opening — SC70 delivers heavy-duty Grade 1 at a value tier
- You're standardizing across Allegion (Falcon locks + Falcon exits + Falcon closers) for a single-source maintenance program
Choose LCN when:
- The opening is exterior, high-cycle, or institutional — 4040XP is the spec default
- You need published 10M-cycle tested life and a 30-year warranty on an abuse-prone opening
- Fire/life-safety hold-open is required — the 4040SE Sentronic integrates with fire alarm
- Mid-tier cast-iron (1460/1461) fits the budget better than a 4000-series frame
Choose dormakaba when:
- Cam-action technology is required for low opening force on ADA-sensitive openings
- Standard-duty interior work where the 7414 price point beats comparable Grade 1 options
- Track-arm aesthetic is specified and you want a European design signature

How do you pair Falcon closers with exit devices and locks?
Falcon's advantage on single-source openings is the parts and keying commonality across its own exit devices and locks. On a fire-rated egress door, pair the SC70 with a Falcon 25 Series rim exit device — dogging is prohibited on fire-rated devices per NFPA 80. For non-rated storefront or auxiliary egress, dogging is permitted. Browse rim panic exit devices for compatible pairings.
How do you adjust the closing speed on a Falcon SC Series closer?
Two valves on the end cap control the hydraulic action: sweep speed (the main closing arc, roughly 90° down to 10°–15°) and latch speed (the final 10°–15° where the latch engages). Turn each valve clockwise to slow, counter-clockwise to speed up. Make quarter-turn adjustments and test — these valves are sensitive and over-rotating backs them out of the body.
If the closer has a third valve, it's backcheck — resistance against the door being thrown open past 75°, protecting the opening from wind or abuse. Backcheck should engage firmly but not slam the door to a stop. Pair with an overhead stop or holder on exterior entries where wind load is significant.
