1) Can the Burndy BIBD2508 UNITAP connector be used with both aluminum and copper conductors?
Yes. The BIBD2508 is an Al/Cu rated multi-tap connector, so you can land aluminum and copper in the same block. Aluminum stranded range is 8 AWG to 250 kcmil and copper stranded is 10 AWG to 250 kcmil. A pre-installed oxide inhibitor is already in the ports, which is what keeps an aluminum termination from building resistance, so you do not need to add compound yourself.
2) Will a 300 or 350 kcmil feeder fit the BIBD2508, or do I need a different Burndy UNITAP?
No, the BIBD2508 tops out at 250 kcmil. For larger feeders, the Burndy BIBD3508 is the same 8-port UNITAP body with a 10 AWG to 350 kcmil range. If your largest conductor is 2/0 AWG or smaller, the 6-port BIBD2/06 covers 14 to 2/0 AWG and takes up less room in the enclosure.
3) Can I use the BIBD2508 multi-tap block in a direct burial or underground handhole?
No. The BIBD2508 is not rated for direct burial. Use it inside enclosures, panelboards, switchgear and wireways only. For a buried or submerged splice you need a connector specifically listed for direct burial.
4) Can I run smaller branch taps like #10 or #8 out of the same UNITAP block as my large feeder?
Yes, that is what the block is for. Copper taps as small as 10 AWG and aluminum as small as 8 AWG land in the same ports that accept up to 250 kcmil, so one 8-port block can break a single feeder into several smaller circuits. Each port has its own setscrew, so ports can be sized independently.
5) What is the difference between a 2-sided entry and a 1-sided entry UNITAP block?
Two-sided entry means the ports are split across both faces of the block, so the run can come in one side and the taps leave the other. That suits a feeder tap in a gutter or panel where conductors approach from opposite directions. The BIBD2508 is the 8-port two-sided version. If all your conductors come from one direction, the BIBS2/05 is a 5-port one-sided entry block rated 14 to 2/0 AWG.
