Dormakaba 6204-86-41 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Simplex 6200 lock need batteries or wiring?
Neither. The 6200 is fully mechanical: the combination is entered on solid metal pushbuttons and the lock runs with no power at all. There is nothing to wire, nothing to replace, and the code cannot be lost to a dead battery. For a property manager with doors in unheated or remote spots, that removes the battery-change route entirely.
2) Is the Simplex 6200 handed, and can I flip it for a right hand door?
It ships factory-handed left and is field reversible, so one part number covers both hands. You do not need to order a separate right hand version or send it back if the opening turns out opposite to what you measured.
3) What if there is already a deadbolt above the door where the pushbuttons would go?
The 6200 can be inverted if an existing auxiliary lock obstructs the installation, so the housing can be turned to clear a deadbolt or other hardware already in the door face. That is the fix for a door that has been added to over the years rather than re-prepping the whole leaf.
4) Should I use a mechanical pushbutton lock or an electronic keypad lock on a back door?
A mechanical unit like the Simplex 6200 is the right call when you want one code, no power, and no maintenance cycle: single access code for all users, programmed at the keypad without pulling the lock off the door, weather resistant for an exterior opening. What it will not do is give per-user codes, audit trail, or scheduled access. If you need to know who came through and when, or to revoke one person's code, you want an electronic lock instead. If you just need the key out of circulation on a rear or utility door, mechanical is fewer moving parts.
5) Can I change the code on a Simplex 6200 without taking the lock apart?
Code changes are done at the keypad with the lock still mounted on the door. It holds a single access code shared by everyone who uses the opening, so a turnover changes one code rather than reissuing keys to a whole tenant list.
6) Is the Simplex 6200 pushbutton lock Grade 1?
Grade 1, and built for it: cast metal front housing, force-resistant clutch-protected exterior thumbturn, unified interior trim plate, and vandal resistant solid metal pushbuttons. That is the durability tier a facility standardizes on for main entries, stairwells and service doors in a commercial building.
7) How do you get in and out of a door with a Simplex 6200 on it?
From outside you punch the code and turn the exterior thumbturn to retract the latch. From inside, the fixed interior knob always retracts the latch with no code, so egress is never blocked. There is no key cylinder in this configuration, so exterior entry is by combination only.
8) What finishes does the Simplex 6200 come in, and do they match on both sides?
Three finishes: Satin Chrome, Black, and Gold Tone. The finish applies to the outside and inside trim together, so the keypad side and the knob side match. All three are offered in both the 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, so you can standardize the look across a building without being pushed into one backset.
